Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment will run smoother and feature more enemies on the Switch 2, with developers promising 60fps gameplay and enhanced battlefield realism.
Nintendo fans have a lot to get excited about with Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, as new details confirm the game will take full advantage of the upgraded Switch 2 hardware. Though it still doesn’t have a release date, the hack-and-slash title was officially announced during the April 2 Nintendo Direct and is shaping up to be a key part of the new console’s lineup.
Developed by Koei Tecmo, Age of Imprisonment serves as a prequel to 2023’s Tears of the Kingdom, focusing on Princess Zelda as she travels back in time to the Imprisoning War. Like its predecessors, the game promises chaotic large-scale battles, but this time with better performance and more enemies on-screen thanks to the power boost from the Switch 2.
In a recent Creator’s Voice video, producer Ryota Matsushita and AAA games head Yosuke Hayashi discussed how the Switch 2 is helping push the Hyrule Warriors formula further. According to Matsushita, the improved hardware has allowed the dev team to increase the number of enemies during battles, enhancing both the challenge and the sense of scale. “More doesn’t always mean better,” he noted, “but in this case, it really adds to the realism and excitement of the battlefield.”
One of the biggest issues with Age of Calamity on the original Switch was performance—specifically, frequent frame rate drops. That’s something the dev team is aiming to fix. Hayashi emphasized that Age of Imprisonment is being built with performance in mind, and early footage shows the game running at a much smoother 60fps.
While only a few gameplay clips have been released, the footage already suggests major improvements over the previous title. However, since the game is still in development, fans should expect more tweaks and polish in the coming months.
Even though Age of Imprisonment won’t launch until winter, fans won’t have to wait long to see Zelda in action on the new hardware. Both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are getting Switch 2 upgrades at launch. Players will be able to pay for enhanced versions of the games, offering better frame rates, higher resolutions, and overall improved visuals.
With multiple Zelda titles set to get a serious performance bump, 2025 is looking like a strong year for fans of Hyrule. Whether you’re revisiting Link’s past adventures or preparing for the time-traveling chaos of Age of Imprisonment, the Switch 2 is shaping up to deliver a much smoother and richer experience.
