If you’ve been spoiled by Skyrim’s companion system where Lydia is always ready to “carry your burdens,” you’re in for a bit of a shock with Oblivion Remastered. The game doesn’t exactly hold your hand when it comes to item storage, and unlike its successor, you won’t have a follower shadowing you everywhere to haul your loot.
The good news? There are actually several safe storage options in Oblivion Remastered—you just need to know where to look. In this guide, I’ll walk you through every reliable storage method, from buying houses to exploiting a clever trick with containers that never reset.
Let’s dive in.
Why Storage Matters in Oblivion Remastered
Before we get into the locations, here’s the deal: most containers in Oblivion reset after three days. That means if you dump your hard-earned gear into a random barrel or chest, it’ll vanish when the container refreshes. Not cool.
You need permanent storage—places where your items will stay put no matter how much time passes. Fortunately, there are four main ways to accomplish this:
- Buy a house (costs Gold, but it’s your own space)
- Use Jauffre’s chest at Weynon Priory (early-game option)
- Find containers labeled “Sack” (free, but you need to remember where they are)
- Use the Hollow Tree Stump in the Imperial City (hidden gem!)
Let’s break down each method.
1. Store Items in Your House

Buy a House to Get Reliable Storage
The most straightforward option is buying a house. You can purchase homes in most major cities across Cyrodiil, and they all come with the benefit of permanent storage—once you set up the right upgrades.
My Imperial House is one of the cheapest options and a solid choice for early-game storage. It’s a small shack located in the Waterfront District of the Imperial City. Here’s how to get it:
- Head to the Office of Imperial Commerce in the Market District
- Talk to Vinicia Melissaeia
- If your Disposition with her is high enough, she’ll sell you the keys for 2,000 Gold
Important note: Most houses don’t automatically come with storage containers. You’ll need to purchase upgrade plans separately. For My Imperial House, buy the Home Storage Plans from Sergius at the Three Brothers Trade Goods shop. He also sells other home upgrades if you want to deck out your place.
Alternative: Earn a Free Room at Roxey Inn
If you’re not ready to drop 2,000 Gold yet, there’s another option. Complete the quest “Zero Visibility” and you’ll earn a permanent room at the Roxey Inn, which is located north of the Imperial City.
The drawers in this room function exactly like house storage—they won’t reset, and anything you stash there is safe. It’s a nice little perk if you’re looking for free storage early on.
2. Jauffre’s Chest in Weynon Priory

Store Items in the Assistance Chest (Until the Priory Gets Attacked)
This is one of my favorite early-game storage tricks. When you bring the Amulet of Kings to Jauffre at Weynon Priory during the main questline, you can ask him for “Assistance.” He’ll unlock a chest next to his desk that’s stocked with useful starting gear.
Once you loot the chest, it won’t reset—meaning you can use it as permanent storage.
Here’s the catch: This chest becomes inaccessible once the Mythic Dawn invades Weynon Priory later in the main quest. If you want to keep using it, you’ll need to delay that part of the story. Specifically:
- Don’t bring Martin back to Weynon Priory
- Avoid progressing Martin’s storyline during the Kvatch Oblivion Gate section
It’s a bit of a workaround, but if you’re not rushing through the main quest, this chest is incredibly convenient for mid-game storage.
3. Any Container Labeled “Sack”

The Secret to Never-Resetting Containers
Here’s a little-known trick that veteran Oblivion players swear by: any container with the exact label “Sack” will never reset.
Let me emphasize the word exact. It must say “Sack”—nothing more, nothing less. Not “Grain Sack,” not “Large Sack,” just “Sack.” If it has any adjectives or extra words in the name, it doesn’t count.
There are hundreds of Sacks scattered throughout Cyrodiil, so you’ll have plenty of options. The downside? You need to remember where you put your stuff. With so many Sacks in the game, it’s easy to lose track.
Pro tip: When you find a Sack you want to use, place a custom map marker on your world map. This way, you can always find your way back without wandering around trying to remember which random building you used.
Other Safe Containers (But Sacks Are Easiest)
There are a few other container types that don’t reset, but they’re harder to identify and less common. Sacks are by far the most reliable and widespread option for free storage.
4. The Hollow Tree Stump in the Imperial City

A Hidden Storage Gem Behind Rindir’s Staffs
Now we’re getting to the really good stuff. Tucked away in the Market District of the Imperial City is a Hollow Tree Stump that functions as permanent storage—and it’s conveniently located right in the heart of the city.
Here’s how to find it:
- Go to the Market District in the Imperial City
- Locate Rindir’s Staffs (it’s directly across from the Office of Imperial Commerce)
- Look for an alleyway next to the shop
- Walk through the alley and check the hidden garden area on your right
- You’ll see a Hollow Tree Stump—that’s your storage spot
This is hands-down one of the best storage locations in the game. It’s free, it’s permanent, and it’s right in the middle of the Market District where you’ll be selling loot and restocking supplies. You can dump your heavy or valuable items here without worrying about losing them, and you won’t forget where it is like you might with a random Sack.
If you’re not planning to buy a house right away, this stump is an absolute lifesaver.
Quick Tips for Managing Storage in Oblivion Remastered
- Mark your storage locations – Whether it’s a Sack or the tree stump, use custom map markers so you don’t lose track
- Don’t use random containers – If it’s not on this list, assume it resets after three days
- Organize by weight – Keep heavy armor and weapons in storage near shops so you can sell without over-encumbering yourself
- Use Jauffre’s chest early – It’s perfect for the first chunk of the game before you can afford a house
- The tree stump is your friend – Seriously, this thing is a game-changer for mid-game storage
Final Thoughts
Storage in Oblivion Remastered isn’t as user-friendly as modern RPGs, but once you know the tricks, it’s totally manageable. Whether you’re buying a house, using Jauffre’s chest, hunting down Sacks, or stashing everything in that magical tree stump, you’ve got options.
My personal recommendation? Use the Hollow Tree Stump early on while you save up for a proper house. It’s free, centrally located, and you’ll never lose track of it. Once you’ve got the Gold, grab My Imperial House and set up proper storage with the upgrade plans.
Now get out there, clear those dungeons, and stop worrying about where to dump all that loot. Happy adventuring! ⚔️
