Assassin’s Creed Shadows Director Hints Dual Protagonists Could Return in Future Games

Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ director says Ubisoft may bring back dual protagonists in future Assassin’s Creed games—but only if it fits the story and setting. Here’s what that means for the series.

Ubisoft might not be done experimenting with dual heroes. Assassin’s Creed Shadows associate game director Simon Lemay-Comtois recently suggested that while the dual-protagonist feature was divisive, it could make a comeback—if it makes sense narratively and fits the setting.

Dual Protagonists Could Return to Assassin’s Creed

Speaking with GamesRadar, Lemay-Comtois explained that Ubisoft “could” explore more dual-protagonist stories in future entries. However, he clarified that this would only happen if both characters serve a real purpose in the story.

“Yes, we could do more dual-protagonist games in the future,” Lemay-Comtois said. “But only if we have a good reason to do it narratively and for the setting.”

That means Ubisoft isn’t committing to the feature—but it’s not ruling it out either. The studio seems to view Shadows as a creative experiment rather than a guaranteed formula.

Why Fans Are Split Over Dual Protagonists

The concept itself isn’t new. Ubisoft Quebec first tried dual protagonists in Assassin’s Creed Syndicate (Jacob and Evie Frye). Later, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey offered a choice between two characters—but players had to pick one per save file.

In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the dual approach went further:

  • Yasuke: A powerful, armored samurai who dominates direct combat.
  • Naoe: A stealthy shinobi focused on agility, parkour, and assassinations.

Their intertwined storylines gave players two distinct gameplay styles—action-heavy or stealth-focused. Still, not everyone loved switching between them.

Some players felt the feature broke immersion or made one character less compelling. Others saw it as a reason to replay the game with a different style. It’s a creative gamble that doesn’t appeal to everyone, but for some, it adds extra depth.

The Future of Assassin’s Creed

While Ubisoft Quebec developed Assassin’s Creed Shadows, future series entries might come from different teams. Leaks suggest the next Assassin’s Creed game could be a remake of Black Flag—which likely won’t include dual protagonists.

Still, this discussion shows Ubisoft’s willingness to test new ideas while listening to community feedback. So while the dual protagonist feature in Assassin’s Creed may not appear immediately, it isn’t gone for good.
