Solve the theft mystery in Canvas the Castle, a Chorrol side quest in Oblivion Remastered. Full walkthrough with all clues, suspect details, and both endings explained.
Canvas the Castle – Oblivion Remastered Walkthrough
One of Oblivion Remastered’s more memorable side quests, Canvas the Castle has you playing detective in the town of Chorrol.
When a valuable heirloom painting goes missing, Countess Valga turns to you for help. With multiple suspects and a well-laid trail of clues, this quest is a solid example of why Oblivion remains a fan-favorite RPG.
Let’s break down everything you need to know—from how to start the quest to the different endings and rewards.
How to Start Canvas the Castle
- Head to Chorrol Castle, on the east side of Chorrol (west of the Imperial City).
- Inside the Great Hall, walk upstairs and talk to Countess Arianna Valga.
- She’ll explain that a painting has been stolen from the castle—one with deep sentimental value.
- Agree to help her, and the quest will begin.
⚠️ Pro tip: Don’t start accusing suspects without proof. It’ll tank their Disposition, making them harder to interrogate.
️♂️ All Suspects (and What They Reveal)
Name | Role | Location & Clues |
Laythe Wavrick | Castle Herald | Near the throne. Knows Orgnolf drinks heavily and often asks for money. |
Chanel | Court Mage | South corner of Private Quarters. Claims she was stargazing, dining, then asleep. |
Orok gro-Goth | Steward | NE Private Quarters. Saw Orgnolf drinking in West Tower. Didn’t see Chanel. |
Orgnolf | Castle Porter | Wandering near the throne room. Claims he argued with a delivery boy and stayed in his quarters. |
Bittneld | Guard Captain | Found in the Barracks (speak in the evening). Says he saw Chanel in the West Tower doing spell research. |
Both Chanel and Orgnolf are linked to the West Tower—the key location in your investigation.
Evidence Locations
West Tower

- Access it through the SW door in Castle Private Quarters.
- Behind some crates, there’s a Trap Door leading to a hidden chamber.
- Inside: Painting supplies and a work-in-progress painting—a big clue, but not yet proof.
Chanel’s Room

- Check her lectern in her chambers.
- You’ll find painting supplies, linking her directly to the art found in the tower.
Dining Hall

- Just off the throne room.
- Examine the end of the rug under the dining table.
- You’ll see paint stains that suggest Chanel passed through here with supplies.
After collecting all this evidence, the game will notify you that you’re ready to make an accusation.
Who Did It?
Chanel is the thief.
She took the painting because she secretly loved the Count and wanted to keep the painting for herself. Her motive is emotional—not malicious.
Endings & Rewards
Ending 1: Turn in Chanel
Tell Countess Valga the truth.
- Chanel confesses.
- She’s exiled from Chorrol, but not jailed.
- Rewards:
- 200 Gold
- 2x Flawed Topaz
- 200 Gold
Ending 2: Lie to the Countess
Tell the Countess you couldn’t find the thief.
- She’s relieved the staff is innocent (lol).
- You get 25 Gold for the effort.
- Then talk to Chanel—she’s grateful and says she’ll paint you something.
- After 3 in-game weeks, return to get a portrait of your character as a reward, which you can place in your home.
Canvas the Castle is a classic investigation-style quest that rewards observation and patience. Whether you go the honest route or help Chanel keep her secret, both endings have their own charm and perks.
