How to Get a Free Horse Early in Oblivion Remastered (And Where to Buy Better Ones)

Want a free horse in Oblivion Remastered? Here’s how to snag one right after the tutorial — plus where to buy faster, better horses later!
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered gives players a massive world to explore, packed with quests, secrets, and places to discover.
But sprinting everywhere isn’t exactly ideal — your stamina bar drains super fast. That’s why getting your hands on a horse early is a total game-changer.
You can either cough up some gold for a decent horse or score a free one pretty much right after leaving the sewer tutorial area. Let’s talk about how to snag your free ride.
How to Get a Free Horse Early in Oblivion Remastered
Once you wrap up the sewer tutorial and step into the open world, you’ll be able to wander wherever you want.
But unless you wanna spend half your time wheezing and running out of stamina, you’ll need a horse. Problem is, horses are expensive — and early game gold is super tight.

Thankfully, there’s an easy workaround to get a free horse without dropping a single coin.
Here’s what you gotta do:
- Head over to Chestnut Handy Stables, just west of the Imperial City.
- Go inside the main building and talk to Snak gra-Bura, the owner.
- Make sure you pick these dialogue options:
- “You’ve got anything useful for me?”
- “I want horse armor, and a horse too.”
- “I’ll take any horse. I’m not fussy.”
- “You’ve got anything useful for me?”
If you pick the right choices, Snak will give you the Old Nag — a free horse already fitted with armor! Pretty sweet deal for basically no effort.
Heads up: if you go back later, they’ll charge you 500 gold to put armor on any horse you already own. So enjoy that first freebie while you can.
Once you’ve got your trusty (if slightly scrappy) steed, you’re good to roam the whole map way faster. Just be careful: if your horse takes too much damage from enemies, it can die — and you’ll be hoofing it on foot again.

Where to Buy a Horse in Oblivion Remastered
If you want a better, faster horse down the line, there are a bunch of stables around the world where you can throw down some gold for an upgrade. Here’s a quick cheat sheet:
Horse | Location | Price | Speed Stat |
Paint Horse | Wildeye Stables in Bruma / Five Riders Stables in Leyawiin | 500 Gold | 28 |
Bay Horse | Bay Roan Stables in Bravil / Grateful Pass Stables in Skingrad | 1000 Gold | 31 |
Chestnut Horse | North Country Stables in Chorrol | 2500 Gold | 34 |
White Horse | Horse Whisperer Stables in Anvil | 4000 Gold | 36 |
Black Horse | Black Waterside Stables in Cheydinhal | 5000 Gold | 38 |
The more expensive the horse, the faster it runs — which can make a huge difference if you’re trying to outrun enemies or just want to zip around the map.
