Fortnite Leak Reveals New Glider Mechanic That Could Change Landings Forever

A new Fortnite leak hints at a major change to gliding: players may soon be able to open and close their gliders at will, making landings faster and more strategic.

Fortnite’s Glider Mechanic May Be Getting a Major Overhaul

A new Fortnite leak has surfaced, and if it proves true, it could completely change how players land in Battle Royale matches. According to a Fortnite leaker Wensoing, Epic Games is testing a glider-releasing mechanic that would let players manually open and close their glider during free fall. That’s a big shift from how things work now—and it could drastically affect the early game, especially in competitive modes.

🚍 How Landing Currently Works in Fortnite

Right now, players start off on Spawn Island and board the Battle Bus once the match begins. After jumping out, they fall toward the island until they either manually open their glider or the game does it for them based on proximity to the ground.

But there’s a catch: terrain height matters. If you’re gliding near a mountain, building, or any raised structure, your glider pops open earlier—whether you like it or not. This can throw off your landing, leaving you short of that loot-filled POI you were aiming for.

🪂 What the New Glider-Releasing Mechanic Changes

The leaked mechanic would give players full control over when to open (and close) their glider after jumping from the Battle Bus. That means no more auto-glider opening just because you’re flying near a tall building or hill. Players could stay in free fall longer, reach their landing spots faster, and potentially outpace other players dropping into the same area.

That’s huge in competitive play where landing first often means getting the best loot first.

⚠️ What About Fall Damage?

Of course, being able to free fall all the way to the ground without a glider would be broken—so there’s a balance in place. Wensoing says fall damage will still apply, so timing your glider deploy is crucial. There may be a safe minimum distance or fall speed threshold that determines whether you’ll survive the landing or not.

This opens up some interesting tactical opportunities—and questions. For instance:

  • Will water still break falls? (It currently does if you jump from cliffs.)
  • Can you dive right into a river or lake to avoid damage completely?
  • Will certain areas with water become new landing hot spots?

🧠 What This Could Mean for Players

If this mechanic goes live, it could lead to:

  • Faster, more precise landings
  • More competitive drop zones
  • New strategies around terrain and water-based POIs
  • An overall skill-based shakeup to early-game positioning

This isn’t confirmed by Epic yet, but given the leaker’s track record and the constant evolution of Fortnite’s mechanics, it’s not a stretch. If it happens, landing in Fortnite may never be the same again.
