At GamingProMax, we’ve been tracking the Borderlands franchise. So when Gearbox drops big news about Borderlands 4, you know we’re locked in. And while the September 12 release is just around the corner, there’s some important info players need to know: two major features won’t be there on day one.
Yep… cross-save and cross-progression are missing at launch.
Borderlands 4: The Long Wait is Almost Over
It’s been six years since the wild ride of Borderlands 3, and honestly, fans are desperate for this series to bounce back strong. Gearbox has been hyping up Borderlands 4 with promises of lessons learned, bigger worlds, and a loot grind that feels closer to the glory days of Borderlands 2.
But as much as the hype is real, one announcement has left players with mixed feelings.
No Cross-Save or Cross-Progression at Launch
Gearbox confirmed in a recent Steam update that Borderlands 4 won’t support cross-save or cross-progression right away.
That means if you start farming legendary loot on Xbox, you won’t be able to pick up that same save file on PC or PlayStation at launch.
The studio admitted this could be frustrating, but reassured fans it’s “on their radar” and planned for a post-launch update. Translation: it’s not a hard no, just a “not yet.”
Thankfully, cross-play is still confirmed for day one, so you’ll at least be able to squad up with buddies regardless of platform—just don’t expect your characters to travel with you… yet.
Why This Matters More in 2025
Here’s the deal: cross-save and cross-progression aren’t “nice to have” anymore—they’re starting to feel like must-have features. In an industry where barriers between consoles are crumbling (looking at you, console exclusives), players expect their grind to follow them wherever they game.
Other looter-shooters like Destiny 2 and Diablo 4 nailed this early on, so naturally, Borderlands fans are side-eyeing this delay with a bit of frustration.
The Bigger Picture: Can Borderlands 4 Rise to the Challenge?
Despite these hiccups, the stakes for Borderlands 4 couldn’t be higher. Between the mixed reception of Borderlands 3 and the messy 2024 movie adaptation, the franchise desperately needs a win.
And Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford clearly has sky-high expectations—he’s predicting this game could push Borderlands past 100 million total sales.
That’s a massive goal, but if the shooting, looting, and humor land just right, it’s not impossible.
Missed Features, But Still Plenty to Get Excited About
Sure, no cross-save or cross-progression at launch is disappointing, especially in 2025 when players naturally expect it. But consider this: the fact Gearbox has already acknowledged the demand means it’s not being ignored.
So while we’re all impatiently waiting for that update, day one still brings cross-play, vault-hunting chaos, and a fresh dose of over-the-top Borderlands energy. And for many fans, that’s enough reason to grab their favorite gun and dive back in.
