TL;DR
- White and gold dye are exclusive to the Pororin Dyehouse — run by a vendor named Devin
- You cannot access Pororin Village until you complete The Unreachable Village faction quest in Chapter 2
- To trigger the quest: try to enter Pororin Forest three times, get sleep-darted, then talk to Arkin nearby
- The Bright Yellow Dye is what unlocks white — find it for free at Reachwood Ruins, south of Hernand, on top of a wooden crate on the tower roof
- Alternatively, buy the Standard Yellow Dye directly from Devin for 150 copper once inside Pororin
- White = select the top-left colour in the Pororin Dye section of the Dyehouse interface
- Gold = select a yellow shade and change the material finish to Shiny or Metallic
- Talk to Devin after unlocking to register Pororin dyes at your camp Dyehouse for use anywhere
White and gold are two of the most sought-after dye colours in Crimson Desert. They make your armour look polished, regal, and visually striking — a big contrast to the earthy reds and browns you start the game with. But finding these colours is not straightforward. The game does not tell you that they are locked behind a specific location, a village quest, and a naming system that calls white dye something else entirely.
This guide explains exactly how to unlock white and gold dye, where to find the dye for free, and how to apply both colours at the Dyehouse. For everything else in the game, visit our full Crimson Desert guide hub.
How the Dye System Works in Crimson Desert
Before jumping to white and gold specifically, it helps to understand how dye works in Crimson Desert.
There are 11 Dyehouses spread across Pywel, and each one specialises in a different colour family. Hernand specialises in reds. Pororin specialises in yellows and whites. Calphade covers greens. Demeniss covers blues and purples. You cannot use a Hernand red at a Pailune Dyehouse and vice versa — each Dyehouse only applies colours from its own regional palette.
When you find or buy a dye and use it from your inventory, it does not get consumed in the traditional sense. Instead, it unlocks a full spectrum of up to 20 shades for that colour family, all available at that region’s Dyehouse going forward. You only need to acquire each base dye once.
Once you progress the Greymane recruitment questline and build a Dyehouse at your own camp, your camp vendor can apply any colour family you have unlocked, regardless of region. That makes your camp Dyehouse the most convenient place to dye gear once it is established. Our how to dye armor, weapons and horse gear guide and how to unlock ranch and farm guide cover the camp progression system in more detail.

Step 1 – Unlock Pororin Village (The Unreachable Village Quest)
White and gold dyes are locked behind Pororin Village. You cannot access Devin or his Dyehouse until you complete The Unreachable Village — a Faction side quest that becomes available in Chapter 2.
Pororin Forest is located south of Hernand, past the Howling Hill Greymane Camp. If you try to walk through it before completing the quest, the Shai inhabitants will hit Kliff with a sleep dart and drag him back outside every single time. There is no way to force your way in.
How to Trigger the Quest
Try to enter Pororin Forest three times. On the third attempt, Kliff gets darted and wakes up nearby. A Shai girl named Arkin will be close by. Talk to her and she explains that the village chief’s hat — the Pororin Relic — has been lost and needs to be retrieved from a giant walking tree in the forest.
To get the relic, you need to climb the tree. Use the tree’s arms rather than its legs — the arms are the correct climbing path to reach its head. If the tree is walking past a nearby cliff, you can shortcut the climb by jumping onto it from the cliff instead. Once you reach the head, grab the relic and return to Arkin.
Completing the quest grants permanent access to Pororin Village and Florindale. Inside Pororin you unlock the Dyehouse, the Research Institute run by Lumiel, and the follow-up Children of the Woods quest. See our full Unreachable Village quest guide and Children of the Woods quest guide for complete walkthroughs.

Step 2 – Get the Bright Yellow Dye (Free Method)
Here is the most confusing part for most players: white dye in Crimson Desert is not called white dye. It is called Bright Yellow Dye. It looks yellow in a bottle. But when applied through the Pororin Dye interface, the top-left shade of this colour family renders as a crisp, bright white on cloth and leather armour.
You can get the Bright Yellow Dye for free without spending any currency. Head to the Reachwood Ruins, located southwest of Pororin Village in the Pororin district, south of Hernand. Find the tall abandoned tower there and climb to the rooftop. On top of a wooden crate on the roof, alongside some arrows, you will find the Bright Yellow Dye.
Pick it up and open your inventory. Select the dye and press X (PlayStation) or A (Xbox) to Use it. This registers the yellow colour family and unlocks the full Pororin colour palette for use at Devin’s Dyehouse.
Step 3 – Buy Standard Yellow Dye from Devin (Alternative Method)
If you do not want to climb the Reachwood Ruins tower, the simpler alternative is to go straight to Devin inside Pororin Village after completing The Unreachable Village quest. Devin sells the Standard Yellow Dye for 150 copper — a very small cost. Buying it and using it from your inventory achieves the same result as the free method.
Talk to Devin regardless of which method you use to get the dye. Speaking to Devin is what registers the Pororin colour palette at your camp Dyehouse, so you can apply white and gold from your camp vendor later without needing to travel back to Pororin every time.
Step 4 – Apply White Dye at the Dyehouse
Once the Bright Yellow or Standard Yellow Dye is used from your inventory, head to any Dyehouse and look for the Pororin Dye section in the colour selection interface. At Devin’s Dyehouse in Pororin itself, this section will be immediately available.
To get white: navigate to the Pororin Dye colour grid and select the top-left shade. Even though the dye bottle looks yellow, this particular shade applies as a clean, bright white on cloth and leather armour pieces. In most lighting conditions it reads as true white — though in very strong direct sunlight it may carry a slight warm tint.
Select the armour piece you want to recolour, choose that top-left shade, confirm, and you are done.

How to Get Gold Dye
Gold works differently from white. It is not a standalone colour — it is the result of combining a yellow pigment with a Shiny or Metallic material finish inside the Dyehouse interface.
Here is how to do it:
Pick any yellow shade from the Pororin Dye palette. Then look for the Material or Texture setting in the dye menu. Change the material option from the default Cloth or Matte Leather to Shiny, Polished, or Metallic. When you apply a yellow colour on a shiny material finish, the result is a rich, gleaming gold tone that makes armour look fully gilded.
The exact material options available will depend on the armour piece being dyed — plate armour and metal-heavy pieces tend to produce the richest gold effect with the Shiny finish. Leather and cloth pieces can also produce a golden look but the tone may be slightly softer.
Experiment with different shades of yellow alongside the Shiny material to find the gold intensity that works best for your armour set. The deeper yellows tend to produce a darker, more antique gold, while the brighter shades produce a clean, vivid gold tone.
Where to Get More Dyes – Free Pickup Locations
While you are in the Pororin area, several other dyes can be picked up for free nearby:
The Bright Yellow Dye is also available for purchase or theft from Shadow’s Whisper Cave, where you find your first Cauldron and Witch early in the game. This is an alternative if you have not yet reached the Reachwood Ruins.
The Standard Yellow Dye is sold by Devin in Pororin for just 150 copper — grab it immediately after completing The Unreachable Village.
For Dark Red, head to the Dyehouse southeast of Hernand Castle — it costs 1.5 silver.
For Bright Blue, visit Linus at the Dyehouse west of Demeniss Castle — 150 copper.
For Bright Green, visit Lauendell at the southern part of Calphade Siege Armory.
The Black Dye is one of the rarest and cannot be crafted at all. See our Crimson Desert Black Dye location guide for exact details on how to get it.
How to Apply Dye at Your Camp
Once you have unlocked Oliver as a camp Dyehouse vendor by advancing the Greymane recruitment questline, your camp becomes the most convenient place to dye gear. Oliver can apply any colour family you have already registered — including Pororin whites and golds — without you needing to travel back to the respective regional Dyehouse each time.
To unlock this, you need to complete all the Gathered Will – Grounds of the Sunrise Greymane faction quests first, including every side step like the apple tree growth quest. This progression is tied to the camp expansion system, so working through it consistently is the key. Our how to unlock camp guide and how to use Contribution Points guide cover this in more detail.
Tips for Getting the Most Out of the Dye System
Visit every Dyehouse vendor you encounter. Simply seeing a dye at a vendor’s shop unlocks its recipe, even if you do not buy it. This means you can unlock the ability to craft a colour later at your Cauldron just by talking to the right vendor.
Use dyes from your inventory immediately. Consuming a dye unlocks its full colour family. Do not sell them thinking you have an extra copy — each base dye only needs to be used once and then the full spectrum is yours.
Craft dyes at the Cauldron for colours you cannot buy. The Cauldron allows you to brew many dye types using insects and flowers. Yellow Medicinal Herbs (Dunbaria, Marigold, Yellow Lavender, Yellow Rosemary) produce the green, orange, and yellow families. White Medicinal Herbs (Dendrobium Orchid, False Starwort, Satintail Root, Snapdragon, White Lavender, White Rosemary) produce sky blue and spring green families. The Cauldron is found early in the game at the Witch’s House north of Hernand Castle.
Remember the regional lock rule. Until your camp Dyehouse is built, you can only apply Pororin dyes at the Pororin Dyehouse or your camp once Oliver is available. You cannot apply them at a Hernand or Calphade Dyehouse.
