Orin, the Emissary of the Nine, returns in Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate. Learn her full backstory, from her tragic origins to her role as the Nine’s emissary and what her future may hold.
In Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate, Guardians are heading out to the edge of the system to finally meet the Nine face-to-face. But right before that happens, someone shows up in the trailer—a floating figure, masked and cryptic, who literally tears out of her own body. If you’re newer to Destiny, you might be asking: Who is this, and what just happened?
That’s Orin, also known as the Emissary of the Nine. And her story? It’s one of the longest and most tragic character arcs in Destiny—a mix of forgotten lives, cosmic manipulation, and constant rebirth. Let’s break it down.
Before She Was the Emissary: Nasyar Sarwar’s Golden Age Origins
Long before Orin ever met a Ghost, she was Nasyar Sarwar, a regular human during the last stretch of the Golden Age. Adventurous and independent, she joined the crew of the Yang Liwei, a deep-space colony ship, with nothing but her mother’s ashes in a silver urn.
Then came the Black Fleet. The Yang Liwei got caught in a battle between the Traveler and the forces of Darkness, and reality itself ripped open. The crew fell into a singularity—and Nasyar became something new.

Becoming Awoken: Nasan Ar in the Distributary
From that singularity came the Awoken, reborn in a pocket dimension called the Distributary. Nasyar became Nasan Ar, with no memory of her former life—only a deep pull toward adventure and the urn she still carried, though she didn’t know why.
She eventually befriended Sjur Eido, the Queen’s right hand, who noticed her skill in diplomacy. Nasan joined Mara Sov, followed her into the Reef, and tried to help bridge the gap between the Awoken and humanity. But Earth was harsher than she expected, and she died trying.
Back in the Light: Orin, the Guardian
She rose again as Orin, a Lightbearer with no memory of her Awoken past. Her Ghost named her. She joined the Pilgrim Guard, met a fellow Risen named Eli, and eventually helped build the Last City when it was just a cluster of tents.
But the Awoken part of her wasn’t done. She met a pilot named Namqi, snuck back into the Reef, and eventually had a quiet, peaceful life… for a while.

The Turning Point: Sjur’s Death & the Nine
Everything changed when Mara Sov called in an old favor. Sjur Eido had been killed, and Orin was sent to investigate. She found a tentacled creature deep below the Moon and tried to kill it—but it vanished, leaving behind ashes from her past. Literally. Her mother’s ashes.
From there, things spiraled. Orin became obsessed with what she saw and started hearing voices. Namqi, Mara, even her Ghost begged her to stop. She didn’t. And when she finally returned from one of her disappearances, Namqi was dead.
Betrayal and Isolation: The Drifter & The Fall
Orin fell apart. She turned to a new friend, Wu Ming, for comfort. But he turned out to be none other than Eli, now calling himself The Drifter. Furious and betrayed, she left the Reef, just as the Red Legion invaded and Ghaul took the Light.
That’s when the Nine reached out.
Becoming the Emissary
The Nine gave her a task: find three “worthy keys.” The experience nearly broke her, but she passed. They stripped her identity, made her their Emissary—a vessel for their strange, cosmic messages. She wasn’t quite herself anymore, but she wasn’t fully gone either.
She helped The Drifter set up Gambit, gifted him the Haul, and warned the Guardian of what was coming. She walked a razor’s edge between being an agent of the Nine and someone still searching for who she once was.
Breaking Free: Orin’s Return in The Edge of Fate
After the final battle with the Witness, echoes spread across the system. The Nine watched, and waited. Then, they reached out one more time—inviting Guardians to Kepler, a remote planetoid in the Oort Cloud.
But something unexpected happened. The Emissary broke free.
Now, Orin stands alone. No longer the Nine’s puppet. No longer a Guardian in the traditional sense. Just… Orin.
Where she goes from here is anyone’s guess. But whatever it is, it’s going to be important—and you’ll see it all unfold in The Edge of Fate.
