Patch 1.02 for Elden Ring Nightreign launches July 30 and brings the long-awaited Duo Expeditions mode. Here’s what’s in the update and why it’s a W for co-op fans.
Tag-Team Time in the Lands Between
Good news for all you Tarnished who prefer quality over quantity in your co-op runs—Elden Ring Nightreign is finally getting a two-player Duo Expeditions mode in Patch 1.02, landing on July 30. No more dragging that third wheel into your intimate little boss-dodging dance. Just you, your bestie, and a whole lot of pain incoming.
Duo Expeditions: A Fan Request That Made It
Until now, Nightreign made you roll either solo or as a trio—there was no in-between. And while three-player squads are great for melting health bars, a lot of players just wanted to duo up with a single partner, Dark Souls-style.
Even Nightreign director Junya Ishizaki admitted that duos got overlooked during development. So hey, at least they owned it and made good fast. Considering Nightreign only dropped a couple months ago, getting this mode in Patch 1.02 is a pretty quick turnaround.
Whether you’re running with your actual partner, your PvE soulmate, or your most reliable backstabber, Duo Expeditions look like a slick way to make the game feel more intimate—and probably more punishing.

Patch 1.02: What Else Is New?
Alongside Duo Expeditions, Patch 1.02 is bringing some quality-of-life buffs that will make inventory hoarders breathe easier:
New Features:
- Relic Filtering: Because digging through 86 cursed anklets for the one with +10 Crit Resist is not the vibe.
- Improved UI for Expeditions: Clean it up, make it fast, let us game.
Between those and the Duo mode, this patch is shaping up to be way more than just bug squashing.
The Everdark Sovereigns Are Coming (And They’re Mad)
While you and your duo are out there syncing rolls and yelling “HE’S ON ME!”, don’t forget that four new Everdark Sovereign variants are also arriving starting July 31:
- Tricephalos – Now with 33% more heads and 100% more screams
- Augur – Who invited the walking prophecy orb?
- Equilibrious Beast – Probably still not balanced
- Fissure in the Fog – Already hated it, now it’s worse
These fights are part of the next Everdark cycle, and if the last round was any indicator, you better buckle in and bring your dodge game.
Why Duo Mode Just Makes Sense
There’s something uniquely satisfying about taking on FromSoft chaos with a single ride-or-die companion. Less chaos, more coordination. Less noise, more focus. Fewer people blaming you for stepping on the Frostfire glyph.
And let’s be real—three-player lobbies always have that one guy you don’t know who charges into the boss arena before you’re ready. Duo Expeditions? Pure harmony. Pure carnage. Pure vibes.

One Does Not Simply Duo Without Trust
FromSoft finally flipping the “Let me play with one friend” switch is a W for the community. And with the Everdark fights spinning up right after the patch, there’s no better time to squad up with your go-to adventuring partner and absolutely get wrecked together like champions.
Whether you’re a parry god or a panic roller, it’s time to hit that summon sign and dive back in. The Lands Between aren’t going to save themselves.
