Elden Ring’s Success and What’s Next
When Elden Ring was released in 2022, it became one of the most popular games ever, winning Game of the Year and earning praise from fans and critics.
In June 2024, the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC was released, expanding the game further. After that, FromSoftware confirmed there would be no more DLCs, but hinted that the Elden Ring universe was not finished.
Instead of waiting years for a sequel, fans were surprised when Elden Ring Nightreign was revealed. This game is very different from the original, focusing on co-op gameplay with a faster, more action-packed experience.
What is Elden Ring Nightreign?
Elden Ring Nightreign is a co-op action game set in the world of Elden Ring. It’s designed to be a shorter and more focused experience compared to the original open-world game.
Game Director Junya Ishizaki explained that the team wanted to create a “condensed RPG experience.” The game keeps all the best parts of Elden Ring—exploration, character building, and tough boss fights—but in shorter, more intense play sessions.

How Does Co-op Work?
The game is designed for teams of three. Players will choose one of eight different character types, each with unique abilities.
Here are four confirmed classes so far:
- Wylder – Balanced speed and attack-focused fighter.
- Guardian – A strong tank with high defense and heavy attacks.
- Duchess – A fast and agile character.
- Recluse – A magic user who fights from a distance.
After picking a character, players will enter Limveld, a new area in the Lands Between. Each time you play, the enemies and locations will change, making every session feel fresh.
The game has a 15-minute shrinking map, similar to battle royale games. As the area gets smaller, teams must fight enemies, collect weapons and armor, and level up before facing a powerful boss.
Each game session has three rounds, with the challenge increasing every time. Players can mark important locations on the map and revive teammates if they fall.
The game also introduces new movement mechanics like vaulting and gliding, making exploration faster and smoother.
Release Date and Network Test
There is no official release date yet, but the game is expected to come out in 2025.
However, a Network Test will be held on January 10, 2025, allowing some players to try the game early. More information about the release might be revealed on February 12, 2025.

Elden Ring Nightreign Trailer
The first trailer for Elden Ring Nightreign was shown at The Game Awards 2024. It features fast-paced co-op battles and teases a new villain called the Night Lord.
The trailer also shows new and returning enemies, including bosses from Dark Souls 3.
Dark Souls Crossover Explained
For the first time, Elden Ring and Dark Souls will officially cross over. Enemies from Lordran (the world of Dark Souls) will appear in the Lands Between.
According to Director Junya Ishizaki, the game takes place in a parallel world where the Shattering War caused a break in reality. This allowed characters from Dark Souls to enter Elden Ring’s universe.
The main villain, the King of Night, is responsible for pulling these enemies into the world. However, Ishizaki confirmed that only a few Dark Souls enemies will appear, and the story will still focus on Elden Ring’s universe.
