- When you first launch Fortnite Runners, you choose one of three starter Sprites: Fire, Water, or Earth. This adds it to your collection for free.
- The choice does not lock you out of the others permanently. All three are the most common Sprites on the island and can be found in-match and extracted at any time.
- Earth Sprite is the best pick for most players — it passively improves chest loot rarity with no risk or extra effort required.
- Fire Sprite is the right pick if you play aggressively and consistently push fights for eliminations.
- Water Sprite is best in squads or if you loot near coastal and river areas of the Shattered Coast regularly.
- Starter Sprites are all Rare rarity — the weakest tier. They cost only 100 Sprite Dust to summon in future matches.
- Once you have all three extracted, you can swap freely between them each match from the lobby screen before you drop.
What are the starter Sprites in Fortnite Runners
The best starter Sprite in Fortnite Runners depends on your playstyle — but for most players, Earth is the right answer. When you first load into Chapter 7 Season 3, the game prompts you to pick one of three starting Sprites: Fire, Water, or Earth. This is a one-time unlock prompt that adds your chosen Sprite to your Sprite Collection for free.
The Sprite you pick sits in your dedicated back slot during matches, replacing your Back Bling cosmetic visually. It activates its ability automatically whenever the right in-game condition triggers — you do not need to press anything or manually activate it. All three starter Sprites are Rare rarity, which is the lowest tier. They are intentionally modest. Their job is to give you a baseline advantage while you build up your collection toward the rarer Epic, Legendary, and Mythic Sprites later in the season.
What each starter Sprite does in Fortnite Runners
Earth Sprite ability

The Earth Sprite gives you a passive chance to find additional rare items when opening Chests. Every chest you open has a random roll — the Earth Sprite adds a second roll chance at a higher rarity tier on top of the base result. In plain terms, you get a better chance of pulling Epic or Legendary items from containers that would normally give you Uncommon or Rare loot.
The ability triggers on every chest open. No conditions, no positioning requirements, no enemy interaction needed. It works from the moment you land and the first chest you open in a match.
Fire Sprite ability

The Fire Sprite creates a fiery damage burst when you deal enough damage to an enemy. The trigger is a damage threshold — you need to land consistent hits on a target to set it off, not just deal any amount of damage. Once the threshold is hit, the burst fires automatically.
The Fire Sprite scales well with aggressive combat. Players who push fights, chain eliminations, and use close-range weapons will see it proc frequently. Players who play passively or avoid early fights will rarely see it activate at all.
Water Sprite ability

The Water Sprite replenishes shields while you are standing in water, and extends the same effect to nearby squad members. The regen is passive but requires you to be physically in a water zone — rivers, lakes, coastal shallows, or any other water body on the Shattered Coast map.
The ability is strong in the right situation and completely useless in the wrong one. If the storm circle closes on dry inland terrain, the Water Sprite does nothing for the rest of that match. There is no ability trigger without water access.
Which starter Sprite should you pick in Fortnite Runners
Pick Earth Sprite if you are a new or returning player
Earth is the most universally useful starter in 2026. Every player opens chests regardless of playstyle. The loot bonus is passive, automatic, and risk-free. You do not need to seek fights, find water, or position specifically to benefit. Better loot early in a match means better weapons before your first fight, which directly improves your survival rate and your Sprite Dust farming efficiency.
Earth also directly increases your chances of finding higher-rarity Sprites from chests, which is the main goal for most players in the early weeks of the season. If a chest normally had a 5% chance of dropping a Rare Sprite, the Earth Sprite’s bonus nudges that chance higher. You are farming loot and Sprite Collection progress at the same time.
The Earth Sprite is also the correct pick if you are new to the Runners extraction loop and are still dying early in matches. Dying with a Fire or Water Sprite means you lost a Sprite that required combat or terrain to deliver value. Dying with an Earth Sprite means you still got better loot before you went out. The value is front-loaded.
Pick Fire Sprite if you are an aggressive player who farms eliminations
Fire is the right call if you consistently land in hot zones, push other players immediately, and play for kill count. The damage burst proc requires you to deal threshold damage to an enemy — if you are already doing that multiple times per match, the Fire Sprite delivers value naturally alongside your normal playstyle.
The risk with Fire is that it requires you to seek fights to get any return. During the opening weeks of Runners, lobbies are extremely aggressive as players learn the new loot pool and Sprite system. Pushing fights to get value from Fire Sprite increases the chance of early elimination, which means losing your Sprite before you extract it. If that trade feels acceptable based on how you normally play, Fire is a strong pick. If you are still learning the map, it is not.
Fire pairs well with weapons that deal burst damage — shotguns and the current season’s close-range meta. See the best meta weapons in Fortnite Runners for what is working in 2026.
Pick Water Sprite if you play in a squad near the coast
Water is the most conditional of the three starters. It is genuinely excellent in the right scenario — passive shield regen for your whole squad while fighting near water is a meaningful advantage in squad modes. Coastal POIs on the Shattered Coast mean there are legitimate routes where Water stays active for significant stretches of a match.
The problem is consistency. If the storm pulls you inland, Water turns off completely. You cannot control where the final circle closes, which means you are partially dependent on RNG for your Sprite to remain active in the late game.
Pick Water if you play duos or squads and your squad tends to rotate through Sunken Shores, Heatwave Harbor, or other coastal POIs. Skip it if you play solo or your drop zone is inland.
Does the starter Sprite choice lock you out of the other two
No. The starter selection gives you a free first Sprite, but it does not lock you out of the other two permanently. All three starter Sprites — Water, Earth, and Fire — are the most common Sprites on the Shattered Coast. They appear in Sprite Chests, regular chests, and wandering the map in nearly every match.
Once you pick up a Water or Fire Sprite during a match and extract it at an Extraction Site, it is added to your Sprite Collection. From that point forward you can summon it before any match by spending 100 Sprite Dust — the lowest summon cost in the game. You will have all three starter Sprites in your collection within a few sessions of normal play regardless of which one you chose first.
The starter selection is about which one helps you most right now, not a permanent commitment. Pick the one that fits how you play in the first few matches and fill in the others through normal extraction.
How to change your starter Sprite before a match
Once you have extracted multiple Sprites, you can switch which one you bring into a match from the lobby screen. Before queuing for a match:
- Open the Sprite Collection tab from the main lobby.
- Select Equip a Sprite and choose from any Sprite in your collection.
- Equipping a starter Sprite costs 100 Sprite Dust. Your first Sprite equip at the start of the season is free.
- Once equipped, it activates automatically when the right trigger condition occurs — no manual activation during the match.
You can also swap to a different Sprite mid-match if you find one on the ground. Walk up to any Sprite during a match and interact to pick it up. It replaces whatever is currently in your back slot. If you find a Ghost or Demon Sprite in a Sprite Chest after landing with an Earth Sprite, swapping up is almost always the right decision — higher rarity beats a Rare starter in most situations. Just remember that swapping means you no longer have the Earth Sprite in your back slot, and leveling progress for that match goes toward whichever Sprite you are currently carrying.

Starter Sprite tips to know before you commit
Your Sprite replaces your Back Bling visually
The Sprite sits on your back and replaces your Back Bling cosmetic while it is equipped. Other players in the lobby and in-match can see which Sprite you are carrying on your back, which gives away information about your build. There is a settings toggle — Hide Sprites On My Back — found under Game settings in the main menu that hides the Sprite model on your own screen. It does not hide the Sprite from enemy players. They can always see it. The toggle is purely for your personal viewing preference and does not provide any tactical invisibility benefit.
Mastery can be completed in two matches
Getting a Sprite to Max Level (level 5) normally takes multiple matches through chest opens, eliminations, and extractions. However, if you win a match with a Sprite equipped, the Victory Royale auto-extracts it. If you then bring that same Sprite into a second match, level it to 5 during that match, and extract it — that counts as Mastery in two matches total. This is the fastest possible Mastery path and is worth planning around for the starter Sprites, since they cost nothing to summon back each time.
Extracting duplicates still earns Sprite Dust
Once you have all three starters in your collection, any time you pick up a Water, Earth, or Fire Sprite during a match and extract it, you earn Sprite Dust even though you already own it. Never ignore Rare Sprites on the ground just because they are already in your collection. They are free Dust every time you extract them. At 100 Sprite Dust per Rare extraction, a few duplicates per match adds up fast toward the 7,500 Dust needed to summon a Mythic Sprite.

Starter Sprite recommendation by playstyle — quick summary
- Solo, new player, or learning the map → Earth Sprite. Risk-free passive loot bonus from the moment you land. No conditions required.
- Solo, experienced player, push heavy → Fire Sprite. Works best if you are actively farming eliminations and comfortable in early fights.
- Duos or squads, coastal drop zones → Water Sprite. Strong passive squad healing but terrain-dependent. Less reliable solo.
Once you collect all three, switch freely each match based on what you are trying to do that game. The starter choice only matters for your first match — after that, the system opens up into a full Sprite Collection that you build across the season. Start with Earth, extract the others as you play, and save your Sprite Dust for higher-rarity summons once you have the basics covered.
