God of War Composer Bear McCreary Reflects on Series Legacy and Possible Return

God of War composer Bear McCreary shares thoughts on his musical journey with the franchise, the emotional closure of Ragnarok: Valhalla, and whether he might return for the upcoming Amazon series.
God of War Composer Gives Update on His Future With the Series
Bear McCreary, the powerhouse composer behind the emotional and thunderous soundtracks of God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok (2022), recently shared his thoughts on his journey with the franchise—and what the future might hold.
Known for his work on Battlestar Galactica, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, McCreary has been a familiar name in both Hollywood and gaming, also contributing to Call of Duty: Vanguard.
For many fans, McCreary’s music helped define the Norse-era God of War experience. His use of booming orchestration and haunting choral elements perfectly matched the evolution of Kratos—from a rage-fueled god to a more introspective, caring father.
His efforts were formally recognized when God of War Ragnarok’s soundtrack took home Best Score and Music at The Game Awards 2022, where McCreary even performed “Blood Upon the Snow” live with Hozier. He also made a fun cameo in Ragnarok as a Dwarven musician named Raeb.

Bear McCreary Reflects on a “Complete” Journey
Speaking with VGC for an upcoming podcast honoring God of War’s 20th anniversary, McCreary reflected on his contribution to the franchise, especially with the Ragnarok: Valhalla DLC.
“It brings a sort of closure to Kratos’ arc, so I feel like my contribution, starting with E3 2016 all the way through to Valhalla, feels complete. I feel complete. I feel like I told a story,” he explained.
He visited the God of War 20th Anniversary Retrospective Gallery alongside other creators, sharing how the Valhalla score gave him—and Kratos—a strong sense of finality.
Could He Return for the Amazon Series?
While McCreary feels his chapter in the God of War saga has wrapped up, he hasn’t entirely closed the door. He noted that the upcoming Amazon live-action series could offer a new opportunity to revisit the world of Kratos, saying the producers “got his number” if they’re interested in bringing him aboard.
Since the showrunner is Ronald Moore, who McCreary previously worked with on Battlestar Galactica, the connection’s already there. With Amazon reportedly ordering two seasons, there’s certainly room for McCreary’s signature sound if he’s called upon.
Looking Ahead: Music, Vinyl, and Rumors
To celebrate the series’ 20th anniversary, Sony is releasing a 13-disc limited-edition vinyl set that covers music from the entire God of War franchise—including McCreary’s work from the Norse saga. While there are rumors floating around about a new title possibly set in the original Greek mythology era, Santa Monica Studio has stated there are no official announcements planned as part of the anniversary celebration.
So, while Kratos might return to Olympus one day, it sounds like—for now—McCreary has laid down his baton.
And what a journey it’s been.
