Welcome back from Chapter 1 to our Herdling walkthrough series! This time, we’re tackling the second chapter: Countryside. Things open up a lot more here, with bigger areas, new mechanics like Stampedes, and a couple of sneaky hidden Calicorns waiting to join your squad. Let’s break it all down.
How to Use the Stampede Move
Early in the chapter, you’ll see an on-screen notice teaching you how to pull off a Stampede. It’s simple:
- Hold RT (right trigger)
- Release RT
- Press RT again to charge forward
This move is clutch for keeping your herd moving fast and will be extra useful in open areas later.
Crossing Bridges & Train Tracks
Keep moving forward until you hit the first bridge. Guide your Calicorns across, then head toward the next bridge that leads out near the train tracks.
From here, just follow the train (no, sadly you can’t GTA-style hijack it) all the way to the tunnel, and you’ll end up at the train station.
Solving the Train Station Puzzle
At the station, the game gives you a little PSA about slowing down your herd. It seems your Calicorns can get hurt by metal and wires here (though mine were totally fine—maybe they’ve got plot armor). Either way, steer carefully toward the big chain-link gate. As usual, take the side path around and open it from the inside to let your herd through.
Next, you’ll run into two tall platforms with a freight wagon stuck in the middle. Here’s what to do:
- Push the wagon forward to connect the platforms.
- Hop over to the second platform and pull the lever to open the next gate.
- Push the wagon again to reach the opposite side of the building.
Inside, you’ll find:
- A Calicorn near a small tree with fruit
- A Campfire and dry logs
- Fruits to feed the new Calicorn
Feed the Calicorn a fruit, tame it, and boom—your herd just got stronger. Don’t forget to light the campfire too, which unlocks the Sparks Flying achievement. It’s a simple one, but it feels so satisfying to see the fire light up after all that work.
👉 Pro tip: You can rest at the campfire to pass time, which is great if it’s too dark to see.
How to Find the Secret Calicorn
Instead of heading straight outside, explore the back of the station where the three wagons are parked. The middle wagon hides a Calicorn underneath.
Problem: You can’t crouch.
Solution: Use berries.
Hold a berry from a nearby tree to lure it out. When it emerges, drop the berry and let it snack. Once it eats, move in and tame it. This is one of the trickiest Calicorns in the chapter—don’t skip it!
Crossing into the Open Countryside
Now that your herd is stacked, guide them across the yellow bridge into a massive open area.
- Go under the highway, but be careful of the sharp debris around the pillars.
- Past the highway, you’ll spot a big patch of glowing blue flowers. These restore your Calicorns’ energy, letting you Stampede more often (basically like chugging a Red Bull for your herd).
- Finally, lead them into the forest to complete Chapter 2 and unlock a new achievement.
Chapter 2 Wrap-Up
The Countryside chapter in Herdling is where the game really starts to open up. You learn how to Stampede, solve your first big wagon puzzle, tame not one but two new Calicorns (including a hidden one), and earn the Sparks Flying achievement.
This chapter feels like the “stretch your legs” moment of the game—bigger maps, bigger herds, and more room to show off your herding skills.
