Elden Ring Nightreign puts multiplayer front and center. Learn how matchmaking works, how to invite friends, and the best ways to start a private expedition.
Elden Ring Nightreign Multiplayer Guide: How to Play With Friends, Use Passwords, and Matchmake Online
Multiplayer has always been a part of FromSoftware’s DNA, but Elden Ring Nightreign takes it in a new direction by embracing a multiplayer-first design.
And with that comes a system that’s a bit different from traditional summon signs and invasion mechanics.
Instead of summoning allies, Nightreign gives you tools to join up, create private groups, or even run solo expeditions—without needing any special items or signs.
Here’s a complete breakdown of how multiplayer works in Nightreign, how to set up groups, and what all the matchmaking settings actually do.
🎮 How to Play Online in Elden Ring Nightreign
Before you do anything else, make sure your game is set to Online Mode.

Steps:
- Go to Settings > Network
- Set Launch Setting to Online
- Restart the game (if you were in Offline Mode)
With that done, head to the Roundtable in Roundtable Hold and interact with it to bring up the Expeditions Menu.
From here, you can:
- Choose any unlocked Expedition
- Select Commence Expedition to start matchmaking
- Wait for up to two other players to join
❌ Note: Crossplay is not supported. You can only play with others on the same platform (PC, Xbox, or PlayStation).
⚙️ Nightreign Multiplayer Settings, Explained
When you’re in the Multiplayer Settings tab (right next to the Expeditions tab), you’ll see several options:

🔹 Team Session
- Use the Invite Members button to directly invite friends from your platform’s friend list.
🔹 Password
- Set a private password to only connect with people who use the same one.
- You can also choose to leave one slot open for a random player if your group isn’t full.
🔹 Group Password
- A softer version of Password Matchmaking.
- Players using the same group password are more likely to be matched together, but it’s not guaranteed, and public players can still be added.
🔹 Expedition Type
- Toggle between Multiplayer and Singleplayer.
- Changing this affects how you enter expeditions—alone or with a team.
👥 How to Play Elden Ring Nightreign With Friends (Private Groups)
You’ve got two ways to squad up privately with your friends:
✅ Method 1: Password Matchmaking
- Agree on a shared password with your group.
- Everyone enters it in the Password field in the Multiplayer Settings.
- All players queue for the same Expedition.
If it works correctly, you’ll match up in the same team. However, if anyone is running a Shifting Earth event or has a Remembrance objective active, matchmaking might fail.
🛠 Fix tip: Try queueing in different orders or have the player with modifiers postpone their event or objective.
✅ Method 2: Direct Invites
If password matchmaking gives you trouble:
- Open Multiplayer Settings
- Use the Invite Members button to bring up your platform’s friend list
- Send direct invites—these are the most reliable way to connect
❓ Why Can’t I Connect With My Friends?
If matchmaking isn’t working, double-check the following:
- Everyone is on the same platform
- All players are using Online Mode
- No one has conflicting objectives (like a Shifting Earth event)
- All players have selected the same expedition
If all else fails, direct invites almost always work, so use that route when needed.
Multiplayer in Elden Ring Nightreign may feel different from previous FromSoftware games, but once you get the hang of the Expedition system and Multiplayer Settings, it’s smooth sailing.
Whether you’re teaming up with friends or braving Limveld with randoms, there are plenty of ways to jump into co-op.
