How to Complete the “Lost Histories” Quest for the Thieves Guild in Oblivion Remastered

Need help finding Theranis and sneaking Amusei out of Skingrad Castle? Here’s a full guide to finishing the “Lost Histories” quest in Oblivion Remastered!
After you fence 400 gold worth of stolen loot, head back to S’Krivva to kick off the “Lost Histories” quest in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered.
She’ll tell you that the Gray Fox needs a rare book called Lost Histories of Tamriel, but the thief she sent to grab it — Theranis — has been missing for a while.
Now it’s your job to track him down, help a new “friend” escape, and recover that precious book.
Let’s dive into it step-by-step!

How To Enter the Dungeon and Find Theranis
- Fast-travel to Skingrad Castle and follow the quest marker to find two beggars nearby.
- Pick one, bribe them a bit, and ask about Theranis.
- Turns out Theranis got cocky bragging about his heist — and ended up arrested. Smooth.
Next, head to Castle Skingrad’s dungeon.
- Talk to the guard.
- He’ll mention you can get a job to access the prisoners.
- He’ll send you to the butler, Shum Gro-Yarug. (Bribing won’t work, sadly.)
If Shum isn’t around, chat with the other servants to find his schedule and track him down.
Once you officially become the castle’s Slop-Drudge, the guard will unlock the door so you can stroll into the dungeon area.
Shortcut Tip: If you’re feeling bold, you can also steal something cheap, get caught, and intentionally get thrown into the dungeon.

Where To Find Theranis
Inside the dungeon, you’ll spot just one prisoner: Larthjar the Laggard.
- If you agree to free him, he’ll spill the beans about Theranis immediately.
- If you refuse, you’ll have to Persuade him until his Disposition is at least 40.
Either way, you’ll learn Theranis was taken by the Pale Lady and hasn’t been seen since. Yikes.
Now look closely — there’s a blood trail on the ground.
Follow it and interact with the right-hand candlestick to open a secret passage leading into the Castle Wine Cellar.
In the Wine Cellar:
- Follow the blood trail to three barrels.
- Find the lever next to the far right barrel and pull it.
- This will pop open the middle barrel, revealing a path forward.
Inside, you’ll face the Pale Lady. Take her down and loot two keys from her body.
You’ll also find Theranis’ body on the floor — yeah, bad news.
Use one of the keys to unlock the nearby cell and free Amusei — Theranis’ cellmate.
But Amusei won’t tell you where the book is until you help him sneak out safely. (Of course.)
How To Sneak Amusei Out of the Castle
Helping Amusei sneak out isn’t too bad if you time it right.
- Wait until around 2 AM when most guards are sleeping.
- From the Wine Cellar, unlock the wooden door to the Dining Hall with one of the keys.
- Head upstairs to a pantry area — peek outside carefully.
- Wait for the patrolling NPC to walk by, then move toward the northern gate into the County Hall.
- Sneak north, dodging any wandering guards, then cut northeast toward the big archway.
- Find the door to the courtyard, use the key, and get outside.
- Cross the bridge and exit into West Weald.
Boom — freedom!
Amusei will thank you and finally tell you where the Lost Histories of Tamriel is hidden.
Where To Find the Lost Histories of Tamriel
After Amusei’s tip-off:
- Follow the quest marker to Skingrad’s eastern gate.
- Keep going until you reach a well.
- Look to the west side of the well — you’ll find a bush hiding the Lost Histories of Tamriel under it.
Grab the book, then fast-travel back to S’Krivva to hand it over and finish the quest.
Rewards:
- 400 gold straight into your pocket.
- Progress deeper into the Thieves Guild storyline.
