How to Craft Potions & Poisons in Oblivion Remastered
Alchemy is back and still essential in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. Whether youโre a spell-slinger or a sword-swinger, knowing how to craft potions and poisons can give you a serious edge.
Potions help you stay alive, poisons make sure your enemies donโtโand both come from the same system in the game. If you’re looking to get started, hereโs everything you need to know.
Unlocking Alchemy: Getting the Tools
You wonโt be able to start brewing potions or poisons right out of the gate. First, youโll need the proper tools. The bare minimum is the Novice Mortar & Pestle, and good newsโyou can find it very early in the game.
If you want to level up your crafting, though, youโll want the full Alchemy toolkit:
- Mortar & Pestle
- Calcinator
- Retort
- Alembic

Where to find them:
After the tutorial, head to Chorrol, west of the Imperial City. Look for the Mageโs Guild, located near the north end of town, just left of the Fighterโs Guild.
Once inside, talk to Teekeeus to join the Mageโs Guildโno big hoops to jump through here. Then head into the room on the left. You’ll find Angalmo, who sells Alchemy gear, but you donโt even have to buy anything.
Just check the side room behind the counter and the wall behind Angalmoโthere should be everything you need for novice-level alchemy, free for the taking (as long as youโre in the guild, itโs not considered stealing).

Crafting Potions and Poisons
Once youโve got your tools, hereโs how to get brewing:
- Open your Inventory.
- Go to the Alchemy tab.
- Select the Mortar & Pestle to open the crafting menu.
From there, itโs pretty straightforward:
- On the left, youโll see your ingredients.
- On the right, the crafting results.
You need at least two ingredients with the same effect to create something. Basic rule of thumb:
- Restore effects = potions
- Damage effects = poisons
When you highlight an ingredient, its effects show up at the bottom left. Combine wisely!
