How to Get Shadowmere in Oblivion Remastered – Purification Quest Walkthrough
While there are plenty of horses in Oblivion Remastered, none match the speed, power, or dark style of Shadowmere. This unkillable black steed is gifted to players by Lucien Lachance after completing one of the most intense quests in the Dark Brotherhood storyline: Purification. Here’s how to trigger the quest and earn the best horse in the game.
🗡️ How to Start the Purification Quest
Before you can purify anything, you’ll need to finish all the contracts given by Vicente Valtieri and Ocheeva in the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary.
Once you’re done:
- Speak to Ocheeva, who will inform you that Lucien Lachance has sent secret instructions.
- Head to Fort Farragut, located northeast of the Imperial City.
- Don’t use the main entrance. Instead, go left from the entrance and find a large tree.
- Inside the hollow tree is a trapdoor—enter it to access Lucien’s hidden hideout.
There, Lucien will reveal the Dark Brotherhood has been infiltrated by a traitor. As part of the Black Hand, you’re given a grim task: perform the Purification ritual—kill everyone in the sanctuary.
🩸 How to Complete the Purification Quest
Time to get to work. You’ll need to wipe out every member of the Sanctuary, including:
- Vicente Valtieri
- Ocheeva
- Teinaava
- Gogron gro-Bolmog
- Antoinetta Marie
- The Dark Guardian (undead guard with a sword)
Tips for success:
- Use stealth attacks to pick off targets one at a time. This avoids triggering group aggro.
- Equip a bow and stay in sneak mode for massive sneak attack multipliers.
- Start with Vicente, since he’s tucked away in a private room at the back of the sanctuary.
- Take out hallway enemies before moving to rooms.
- If the fight escalates, use potions or invisibility spells to regroup.
There may be additional rogue assassins outside the sanctuary. Follow the quest markers to track them down and finish the job.
🎁 Getting Shadowmere
Once the bloodbath is over, return to Fort Farragut and speak to Lucien Lachance.
As a reward for your loyalty (and ruthless efficiency), he’ll give you Shadowmere, a dark armored horse with:
- High speed and stamina
- Combat capabilities
- The ability to respawn if killed
You won’t just be fast—you’ll be unstoppable.
