But here’s the kicker: it’s random. And since you can’t directly control who gets the Kamek item or what the transformations will be, it can feel like a bit of a waiting game. Still, there are a few tricks that can help increase your chances of benefiting from it.
🎲 What Does the Kamek Item Do?
When a racer uses the Kamek Transformation Power, it:
- Randomly transforms every racer ahead of the user into a different character.
- Lays down track obstacles themed around the transformed characters.
- Occasionally gives players access to a new character for their roster—but only if it’s one they haven’t unlocked yet.
It’s a total curveball during a race, and while it doesn’t always result in a new unlock, it can be a shortcut for expanding your character collection.
🪄 How to Boost Your Chances of Getting Transformed
You don’t need to get the item yourself—in fact, the goal is to get hit by it, not use it.
To increase your odds:
- Hop into VS Race Mode.
This gives you full control over race settings, which is key. - Set Items to “Frantic.”
Frantic Mode ups the frequency and intensity of item drops, especially powerful ones like Kamek’s. - Stay in mid or back positions during the race.
NPCs in lower spots are more likely to get Kamek, and you want to be ahead of them so you’re in the line of transformation. - Repeat races and be patient.
There’s no surefire way to guarantee a new character unlock through this, but the more you play, the better your odds.
While there’s no way to fully control the outcome, setting the stage for a Kamek transformation and crossing your fingers can definitely be part of the fun—and might even save you the grind of unlocking some characters the usual way.
