How to Join the Knights of the Thorn in Oblivion Remastered

Want to become a Knight of the Thorn in Oblivion Remastered? Here’s how to start and complete “The Wayward Knight” quest and unlock exclusive faction rewards.
Join the Knights of the Thorn in Oblivion Remastered: Complete Quest Guide
Oblivion Remastered has a bunch of major factions, but it also features a few lesser-known groups you can join—and the Knights of the Thorn is one of them. You’ll get the chance to become an honorary member during the “The Wayward Knight” quest, where you team up with Cheydinhal’s heir, Farwil Indarys, to shut down an Oblivion Gate outside the city.
Depending on how things play out, you’ll either walk away with exclusive gear and a fancy title… or just a handful of gold and a few keepsakes. Let’s break it down.
🔓 How to Start “The Wayward Knight” Quest

Before you can begin, you’ll need to complete the Dagon Shrine quest from the main storyline.
Once that’s done:
- Travel to Cheydinhal, east of the Imperial City.
- Enter through the West Gate and talk to any guard.
- Ask about Cheydinhal, and they’ll mention an Oblivion Gate has appeared nearby—this officially kicks off The Wayward Knight quest.
Follow the quest marker through the west gate of the city until you reach the Oblivion Gate. You’ll meet a guard who tells you that Farwil Indarys, the Count’s son, has already gone in to shut it down. Time to follow him inside.
🛡️ Inside the Oblivion Gate: Saving Farwil

Once inside, fight your way through enemies as you make your way to The Bowels, then into the Oblivion realm proper. You’ll encounter some fallen Knights of the Thorn along the way—don’t forget to loot their gear if you want a few extra items.
Eventually, you’ll meet Farwil and his companion. After a quick conversation, your goal is clear: push forward, clear out enemies, and close the gate by grabbing the Sigil Stone at the top of the tower.
Important Tip: If you want to join the Knights of the Thorn and earn their best rewards, Farwil must survive.
To help him stay alive:
- Clear enemies before he rushes in.
- Use Restoration spells with Heal on Touch or Heal on Target, like Convalescence, to keep him healed during fights.
Once you reach the Sigillum Sanguis, climb to the top using the bone-like paths and grab the Sigil Stone. That’ll shut down the gate and teleport everyone outside.
🏰 Quest Outcome & Rewards

Your rewards from Count Indarys depend entirely on whether Farwil survives or not.
✅ If Farwil Lives:
- You become an Honorary Knight of the Thorn
- Choose between:
- Staff of Indarys (Magicka-based reward)
- Thornblade (Melee-focused reward)
- Staff of Indarys (Magicka-based reward)
❌ If Farwil Dies:
- You receive:
- 400 Gold
- Indarys Signet Ring
- Knights of the Thorn Medallion (enchanted)
- Knights of the Thorn Shield
- Steel Armor Set and Sword
- 400 Gold
Even if you fail to save Farwil, the consolation prizes aren’t too shabby—but the title and unique weapons make saving him well worth the effort.
⚔️ Why Join the Knights of the Thorn?
While they’re not a major faction like the Fighters or Mages Guild, joining the Knights of the Thorn adds another badge of honor to your adventurer resume. Plus, the quest-exclusive gear is powerful enough to carry you through a good chunk of mid-game content.
Ready to storm an Oblivion Gate and earn your place among Cyrodiil’s bravest? Time to show Farwil how it’s done.
