Struggling with the Paint Cage in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s Inside the Monolith map? Here’s how to unlock it, where to find it, and the reward you’ll get for opening it.
How to Open the Paint Cage in Inside the Monolith – Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
When you’re tackling the Inside the Monolith map in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, you might come across a Paint Cage that’s a bit trickier than usual to crack open. Normally, these cages are pretty straightforward, but this one throws a curveball—you’ll need a special ability to get it open. Don’t sweat it though; here’s a full guide on what you need to do.
The Key: Unlocking the Paint Break Ability

The ability you’re going to need is called Paint Break. You won’t have it by default—you have to find four Lost Gestrals first. Once you’ve tracked them down, go have a chat with Sastro at your Camp. After that convo, you’ll unlock Paint Break, and with it, you’ll be ready to bust open the stubborn Paint Cage.

How to Find the Paint Cage
Here’s how to get to the Paint Cage once you’re on the Inside the Monolith map:
- Start at the Tainted Cliffs expedition flag.
- Backtrack through the cave until you pass three Nevrons.
- When you hit a wall, turn right.
- Look for a tunnel you can crouch through.
The Paint Cage is waiting for you on the other side!

How to Open the Paint Cage
As with every Paint Cage in the game, you’ll need to break three locks using your Free Aim shots. Here’s where they’re hiding:
- First Lock: On a tall pillar right in the center of the area, just below the Paint Cage.
- Second Lock: On the wall behind the statue to the left of that central pillar.
- Third Lock:
- Turn around so that the Paint Cage is now on your right.
- Follow the path to the left and you’ll find a Paint Spike (a root-looking thing with glowing blue lines).
- Use Paint Break to remove the Paint Spike and reveal the final lock.
- Turn around so that the Paint Cage is now on your right.
Once all three locks are destroyed, the Paint Cage will finally open!
What’s Inside the Paint Cage?
So, what’s your reward for all that effort?
You’ll get the Random Defense Pictos (Level 15), and it’s pretty solid if you’re building a party member around critical hits.
Random Defense (Level 15) Details:
- Critical Rate: +34%
- Effect: Damage you take gets randomly multiplied between 50% and 200%.
Risky, but potentially game-changing for the right build.
And that’s it! Now you’re all set to crack open that Paint Cage and snag some powerful loot.
