Multiplayer in Mario Kart World is super flexible, giving you three solid ways to play with your friends:

The menus might look a little different than past games, but the basic system works just like you’d expect. Whether you’re teaming up in person or racing friends across the world, here’s how to get it all set up.

🚗 How to Create a Private Room (Online Multiplayer)

To race your friends online, start by creating a private room:

  1. From the main menu, choose Online Play.

Pick your character and kart.

Once the room is made, you’ll enter a Free Roam lobby, but this time it’s private. When your friends join, they’ll appear in the world alongside you.

When everyone’s ready, the host presses the + button, then chooses Start Game.
You’ll pick your map, vote as a group, and the game randomly picks one from the pool.

🔑 How to Share or Join a Private Room

There are two ways to join a private room in Mario Kart World:

Option 1: Use a Room Code

The host should press the + button and select View Room Info.

A 6-digit room code will appear—share this with your friends.

From the Online Play > Friends menu, others can input this code to join.

Option 2: Join Directly via Friend List

  • If you’re Nintendo Switch Online friends, just wait for your friend to make the room.
  • Open Online Play, scroll to their name, and join their game directly.

  2. Choose the number of players (2 to 4).
  3. Sync your controllers (Joy-Cons or Pro Controllers).
  4. Pick your character and kart.
  5. Vote on a track and start the race!

Just make sure you’ve got enough controllers—each player needs their own.

📶 What Is Wireless Play?

Wireless Play lets you connect multiple Switch 2s locally without the internet.

  • Up to two players per system can join.
  • Each system must select Wireless Play from the main menu.
  • Once everyone’s on the same screen, follow the prompts to connect.
