Hypercharge: Unboxed, a shooter that looks like it stepped right out of Toy Story, has recently blown up on PlayStation — but not for the reasons you might expect. After a pretty quiet launch on PS4 and PS5, the game suddenly shot up the charts to become the #5 best-selling new release on the platform. And all it took was one developer’s honest, heartfelt reply to a frustrated fan.
The Underdog in a Crowded Genre
The shooter scene is crowded — very crowded. Between big-name releases and flashy free-to-play titles, it’s tough for smaller games to make a dent. Plenty of solid shooters (LawBreakers, Battleborn, XDefiant, and more) have fizzled out after failing to find a lasting playerbase.
So when Hypercharge: Unboxed launched on PlayStation at the end of May, it seemed like it might follow the same path. The game originally came out on PC and Switch back in 2020, earning decent reviews but never reaching mainstream success. When the PlayStation version landed, some players noticed a lack of online activity and took to social media to voice their frustration — one even accused the devs of being “lazy” and releasing the game as a quick cash grab.
The Devs Took a Different Approach
Rather than ignoring the comment or clapping back, the developers did something most players didn’t expect — they answered with kindness and honesty.
On Twitter, the devs acknowledged the lack of thousands of players online. But instead of making excuses, they said they were happy knowing someone, somewhere was having fun playing local split-screen with friends. And if that was all the game ever achieved? They were okay with that.

A day later, the team shared a longer message. They explained that Hypercharge: Unboxed is made by just five people — a tiny team working with a tiny budget. They talked about how proud they were to have made the kind of game they dreamed of as kids. They said they already felt “rich” just by making something they love, and made it clear they’d never go free-to-play or add microtransactions, even if it meant missing out on millions of players.
The Internet Loved It
Turns out, people were really moved by that kind of transparency. The post racked up over 650,000 views, and the replies were filled with support, appreciation, and people buying the game just to show love to the devs.

In an interview with Polygon, Hypercharge’s marketing head Joe Henson said the whole team was blown away by the response. They never expected the tweet to go viral or the game to shoot up the charts.
While Hypercharge has since dropped off the top-seller list, that burst of momentum could lead to something bigger — especially with crossplay letting players connect across platforms. It’s a great reminder that sometimes, sincerity really does go a long way.
The Takeaway? People Still Care About Heart
In a world where games often feel more like products than passion projects, Hypercharge: Unboxed stands out — not because of flashy marketing or big money, but because a few devs spoke honestly, stayed positive, and stuck to their vision.
And hey, that’s pretty cool.
