LEGO Pokémon Sets Should Just Be the Beginning

On March 18, The Pokémon Company International and The LEGO Group announced their first-ever official partnership to bring Pokémon-themed LEGO sets to fans starting in 2026. In the teaser trailer, we see four flat LEGO bricks combine to form Pikachu’s tail, followed by the electric mouse Pokémon lighting up a LEGO Pokémon sign. While no specific sets have been revealed yet, this announcement likely marks the end of Mattel’s Mega Pokémon building block toy line, which has been running for eight years and shares a similar concept with LEGO.

Regardless of what happens to Mattel, this LEGO-Pokémon partnership shouldn’t stop at just physical sets. There’s a massive opportunity here—one that could lead to something even bigger: an official LEGO Pokémon video game.

What a LEGO Pokémon Game Could Look Like

For the past two decades, LEGO video games have been comedic, kid-friendly adaptations of iconic movies and games, like LEGO Star Wars or the recently announced LEGO Horizon Adventures. Most of these games have been developed by TT Games, but LEGO’s CEO, Niels Christiansen, recently stated that LEGO is building its own in-house game development team. Even so, if a LEGO Pokémon game happens, Nintendo and Game Freak would likely be involved, given their control over the Pokémon franchise.

But here’s the tricky part—what story would it follow?

One option is adapting Ash Ketchum’s journey, but condensing his 25-season adventure into a single LEGO game would be tough. Instead, it could focus on key episodes leading up to Pokémon: The First Movie, but that might feel disconnected. Another idea is retelling the classic Pokémon Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow storyline, but since this would be the sixth version of a game set in Kanto, it might feel repetitive.

Gameplay Possibilities for a LEGO Pokémon Game

How a LEGO Pokémon game plays would depend on its direction. If it stays true to the mainline Pokémon games, it could feature LEGO trainer minifigures exploring regions, catching Pokémon, and battling in a turn-based system.

However, if the game focuses more on the Pokémon themselves, it could take inspiration from Pokkén Tournament or Pokémon Rumble, featuring real-time melee combat with LEGO Pokémon fighting across different battlefields. There’s even potential to integrate real-life LEGO sets, similar to Pokémon Rumble U, where scanning LEGO minifigures could unlock in-game content—just like amiibo.

Could LEGO Pokémon Play Like Mystery Dungeon or Pixelmon?

Another fun approach would be a LEGO Pokémon Mystery Dungeon-style game. Since 2005, Mystery Dungeon games have told Pokémon-led stories with roguelike mechanics, dungeon crawling, and treasure hunting. A LEGO version could maintain this third-person adventure format while using the signature LEGO humor and aesthetic instead of the traditional Pokémon anime look.

Alternatively, LEGO and Nintendo could take a Minecraft-inspired route, similar to the popular Pixelmon mod. Pixelmon turns Minecraft into an open-world Pokémon adventure where players can battle, trade, and explore alongside crafting and building. If LEGO and Nintendo made a game in this style, but with LEGO bricks instead of pixelated blocks, it could be a unique blend of Pokémon, LEGO, and Minecraft—a more refined take on LEGO Fortnite’s survival world concept.

LEGO Pokémon Has Endless Possibilities

With Pokémon and LEGO teaming up for the first time, the potential goes beyond just physical sets. A LEGO Pokémon video game could introduce a fresh way to experience the franchise—whether through classic RPG mechanics, real-time battles, dungeon crawling, or even an open-world adventure.

While we wait for the first official LEGO Pokémon sets in 2026, fans can only hope that Nintendo, Game Freak, and The Pokémon Company see the bigger picture and bring Pokémon into the LEGO gaming universe as well.
