Marvel Rivals adds an auto chess twist with Ultron’s Battle Matrix Protocol, launching June 6, 2025. Here’s how the mode works, including team building, positioning, cards, and synergies.
♟️ Marvel Rivals Auto Chess Mode – Everything You Need to Know About Ultron’s Battle Matrix Protocol
Nope, League of Legends isn’t invading the Marvel universe—but Marvel Rivals is taking a page from Teamfight Tactics and Dota Underlords with a new limited-time auto chess mode called Ultron’s Battle Matrix Protocol.
It’s a bold and brilliant twist on the autobattler formula with Marvel flair: heroes with distinct abilities, card-based synergies, economy management, and smart positioning—all coming to Marvel Rivals on June 6, 2025. If you’re an auto chess veteran or just Marvel-curious, here’s what you need to know.
🚀 What Is Ultron’s Battle Matrix Protocol?
It’s Marvel Rivals’ take on the auto chess genre, where you build a team of heroes, position them on a grid-based battlefield, and watch as they battle it out automatically against other players’ squads. Think TFT, but with Venom, Hela, Namor, and more.
- Mode type: 6-player free-for-all
- Goal: Be the last player with points remaining
- Each player starts with: 50 points
- Lose a round: Lose points
- Win: Survive and outlast the others
👥 Hero Selection & Match Structure

🔹 Start With Six Heroes
Unlike traditional autobattlers where you build from a single unit, here you draft six heroes right at the start. Not every Marvel Rivals character is available in this mode yet, but you’ll have plenty of options for early strategy.
🔹 Face Off Against Five Other Players
You’ll battle round-by-round against other players’ squads. The faster you figure out your comp’s strengths—and your opponent’s weaknesses—the better your odds of making it to the final round.
🧠 Positioning Is Key

Just like in TFT, where you place your units makes or breaks your strategy.
- Hela (ranged Duelist) needs protection behind tanks.
- Assassin types can jump to the backline—plan for it.
- Vanguards or supports can be placed in rear slots as bait or bodyguards.
Each hero’s role and range matters, so adapt your positioning based on what your opponents are doing. You can see their boards between rounds, so scout and adjust.
💳 Card-Based Economy & Synergies

Marvel Rivals shakes up the economy game with a card shop system and multipliers.
💡 Card Shop Basics:
- After each round, choose 1 of 4 upgrade cards.
- Cards grant buffs like increased health, attack speed, or damage resist.
- You can refresh the shop to reroll the cards or lock a card to save it for the next round.
- Cards tie into hero roles and synergy types, just like TFT traits.
🪙 Earning Points:
- Winning or losing streaks earn points (shown top-right during buying phase).
- Spend these points on cards to boost your team.
🔢 Hero Multipliers:
- Each hero has a visible x1, x2, or x3 multiplier.
- Higher multipliers = stronger versions (think TFT star levels).
- Venom x3 = larger model, massive damage
- Hela x2 = split-projectile attacks
- Namor x2 = controls multiple summoned creatures
- Venom x3 = larger model, massive damage
📅 Release Date & Limited-Time Status

Ultron’s Battle Matrix Protocol launches Friday, June 6, 2025, with the Marvel Rivals Season 2.5 update. It’s being introduced as a limited-time experimental mode, but based on community response, it might stick around (and honestly, it sounds way too good to stay temporary).
Oh—and yes, Ultron becomes a playable hero too, fittingly arriving with his own chessboard deathmatch.
As someone with 300+ hours in Teamfight Tactics, the idea of Marvel autobattler madness has a ton of appeal. With smart economy, flashy skills, and Marvel-style flair, Ultron’s Battle Matrix Protocol might just scratch that tactical itch in a way no other mode in Marvel Rivals can.
If you’re even remotely into strategy or just want a fresh break from the usual shooter chaos, this is a mode to keep on your radar. And hey—who wouldn’t want to see Venom and Namor battle it out on a chessboard?
🧩 Stay tuned for updates as more details drop during and after the event launch.
