Crafting Magic: How to Make Custom Spells in Oblivion Remastered

Spellmaking in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is one of the game’s most fun and powerful features—especially for mages. But it’s not something you can do right out of the gate. You’ll need to unlock it first and know where to find the right tools to make your dream spell combo a reality.

Here’s everything you need to know about unlocking the Altar of Spellmaking and crafting custom spells tailored to your playstyle.

Where to Find Altars of Spellmaking

There are only two spots in the game where you can make custom spells: The Arcane University and Frostcrag Spire.

🧙‍♂️ Arcane University (Mages Guild Route)

To use the Altar of Spellmaking at the Arcane University, you need to:

  1. Join the Mages Guild (you’ll start as an Associate).
  2. Visit all seven Mages Guild Halls across Cyrodiil and get Recommendations from each chapter leader.
  3. Return to the Arcane University and talk to Raminus Polus in the Arch-Mage’s Lobby.

Once you’re promoted to Apprentice, you’ll gain access to both the Altar of Spellmaking and the Altar of Enchanting in the Praxographical Center. This is the go-to method for most magic-focused characters.

🏰 Frostcrag Spire (DLC/Player Home Route)

If you’re not keen on joining the Mages Guild, Frostcrag Spire is your shortcut.

  • Head to Gnoll Mountain, east of Bruma, and find Frostcrag Spire.
  • Inside, read the book that triggers the tower’s upgrade system.
  • Buy the Magetallow Candles from Aurelinwae at the Mystic Emporium in the Imperial City’s Market District.
  • Return to Frostcrag and activate the Altar.

Once the upgrade is complete, you’ll be able to create custom spells here without being a guild member.

How to Make a Custom Spell

Once you’ve got access to an Altar of Spellmaking, here’s how the process works:

  1. Interact with the Altar to bring up the custom spell menu.
  2. On the left pane, select a spell effect. These are based on spells you already know and are skilled enough to cast.
  3. Adjust the right-side sliders to tweak the spell’s performance:
    • Range: Self, Touch, or Target.
    • Magnitude: How strong the spell is.
    • Area: How wide the effect spreads (0-100).
    • Duration: How long it lasts (1-120 seconds).
  4. Watch the Gold cost (far right) and Magicka cost (far left) update in real time.
  5. Want to get fancy? Add multiple effects by stacking them from the left pane.
  6. Give your new spell a name, then hit Create.

It’ll now show up in your Magic menu, ready to be unleashed!

Pro Tips for Spellmaking

  • 🧠 Check Your Magicka: Just because you can make it doesn’t mean you can cast it. Always compare the magicka cost of your custom spell with your max magicka.
  • 🛑 Skill Requirements: The game won’t let you add effects above your skill level (like Master-level Destruction), but it will let you make spells that are too expensive to use. Be smart with your stats.
  • 💀 No Deleting Spells in Vanilla: Once you make a custom spell, it’s there for good—unless you’re using console commands or mods to remove it.

Creating your own spells in Oblivion Remastered is one of the most satisfying parts of being a mage. Whether you’re crafting devastating fireballs or handy utility spells, the possibilities are endless—just make sure you’ve got the magicka to back it up.
