Well, it’s update day again for PlayStation 5 users—but don’t get too excited just yet. Sony has started rolling out firmware version 25.04-11.40.00 worldwide as of June 4, and… well, let’s just say it’s not exactly a game-changer.
According to the official patch notes, this update simply brings some light improvements to messages and screen usability. That’s it. No shiny new features, no major overhauls, just a bit of polish. Basically, it’s one of those “stability and performance”-style updates we’ve all come to know (and barely notice).
But before you write this one off completely, keep in mind: Sony’s big June State of Play event is happening today at 5 PM ET, just a few hours after the update began rolling out. Coincidence? Maybe not. The event promises 40 minutes of reveals and updates on upcoming PS5 titles, and while Sony’s keeping the lineup under wraps, fans are hoping to see more of Marvel’s Wolverine, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Ghost of Yotei, and FBC: Firebreak.
And that’s not all on the horizon. Summer Game Fest is just around the corner too, and June is stacked with new PS5 game releases. Whether you’re into narrative adventures, mind-bending sci-fi, or classic Sony weirdness, there’s a lot to look forward to this month.
As a refresher, the last major PS5 update in April was actually a fan-favorite. It brought back those nostalgic PlayStation themes—letting players customize their home screens with visuals and sounds from the PS1 to PS4 eras. Originally launched as a celebration of PlayStation’s 30th anniversary, the themes made such a splash that Sony decided to bring them back permanently. (Good call, Sony.)
So yeah, today’s update might not blow your socks off, but with State of Play, new games, and more potential updates coming soon, PS5 owners still have plenty to be excited about.
