Pokémon Pokopia Becomes Highest-Rated Pokémon Game Ever With 89 on Metacritic

Pokémon Pokopia launches March 5, 2026 on Nintendo Switch 2 with an 89 Metacritic score — making it the highest-rated Pokémon game ever and the best-reviewed game of 2026 so far.

TL;DR: Pokémon Pokopia launches March 5, 2026 on Nintendo Switch 2 with a Metacritic score of 89 — beating every previous Pokémon game and making it the best-reviewed game of 2026 so far, ahead of Resident Evil Requiem’s 88.

Ahead of its March 5, 2026 Nintendo Switch 2 launch, Pokémon Pokopia has already made history — critics have awarded it an 89 out of 100 on Metacritic based on around 50 reviews, making it the highest-rated entry in the franchise’s 30-year history. The game also holds a 93% Critics Recommend score on OpenCritic, far ahead of Pokémon X and Y’s combined 84% on the same platform.kotaku+1

The game is a life-simulation spin-off co-developed by Koei Tecmo’s Omega Force and Game Freak, drawing immediate comparisons to Animal Crossing, Dragon Quest Builders, and Viva Piñata. GamesRadar‘s Sam Loveridge called it “a brilliantly bizarre blend of Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Dragon Quest Builders, and Viva Piñata” that still “manages to be a unique spin-off”.

What Pokopia Actually Is

In Pokopia, you play as Ditto transformed into human form, which is central to the gameplay — your character can learn and use moves from other Pokémon to reshape environments, solve puzzles, and build habitats. The game supports up to four-player co-op for collaborative world-building. The world also features a real-time day/night cycle, dynamic weather, and seasonal changes that affect Pokémon spawning and behavior.

The game features a Pokédex with at least 300 Pokémon — confirmed to be larger than 2025’s Legends: Z-A. IGN awarded it a 9/10, praising it as “a real treat: an enjoyable building and town simulator that capitalizes on the charming personalities of its monsters” and noting it “strikes a healthy balance between freedom and suggestion in its building mechanics”. GAMINGbible and TechRadar Gaming both gave it perfect scores, while only two outlets rated it “Mixed”.

Historic Achievement for a Spin-Off

What makes Pokopia’s score especially remarkable is the context: every other title in the franchise’s Metacritic top 10 is either a mainline game or a direct remake. Pokopia is not only the first spin-off to reach this ranking — it’s also the first Pokémon title of the 2020s to break into the top 10, after a string of games that divided the fanbase. Nintendo Life awarded it 8/10 and called it “the freshest Pokémon experience in a long time”.gamesradar+1

It’s also currently the best-reviewed game of 2026 overall, edging out Resident Evil Requiem (88) and Mewgenics for the top spot. However, scores remain subject to change as more reviews are published in the days around launch. Whether or not Pokopia holds its crown, the achievement is significant for a franchise Pokémon GO that is already the highest-grossing media franchise of all time.
