Roblox has officially ended its Legacy ChatService, moving all games to TextChatService. Here’s how the change impacts older games, admins, and the wider player community.

Roblox has officially retired its Legacy Chat system, and not everyone is thrilled about the switch. The move to TextChatService was finalized on April 30, 2025, and players across the platform are already feeling the effects.

Many older games relied on Legacy Chat for basic communication and admin functionality. Now that it’s gone, some of these games may no longer function properly—especially if the developers are inactive or banned, making updates impossible. One Reddit user even predicted this could spell the “death of admin titles.”

💬 What Happened to Legacy Chat?

Roblox announced back in late 2024 that the Legacy ChatService would be phased out in favor of the new TextChatService. The main reason? Child safety. Roblox wanted all in-game messages to follow updated parental control policies and evolving legal standards.

The update is part of a broader effort to keep Roblox safe and compliant. And while it’s a step forward from a moderation standpoint, it’s left older games vulnerable—particularly those that can’t be manually updated.

⚠️ What This Means for Older Games

The new chat system is not a direct plug-and-play replacement. In many cases, manual adjustments are needed. Roblox has tried to auto-convert unupdated games to the new system, but if that fails:

  • Chat may be disabled in that game, or
  • The game could be made private until the owner converts or disables chat manually.

This is especially worrying for admin games, which rely on legacy commands and chat functions. Players fear many of these titles will vanish unless devs intervene.

🎨 Players Miss the Old Style

Beyond functionality, fans also miss the look and feel of the old chat. Some users called the new TextChatService layout “too corporate” and preferred the more creative and retro aesthetic of the original. It’s a small change with a big emotional impact for long-time users.

🔊 Voice Chat Still Going Strong

Roblox’s voice chat system remains active and popular, with its own set of safety tools for parents. While it offers another way to communicate, it’s not a full replacement for typed commands or chat scripts—especially in older games.

🤔 What’s Up With “Friends”?

As if the chat change wasn’t enough, Roblox also quietly renamed the “Friends” system in a recent internal build. The change hasn’t been officially announced, and players are left scratching their heads. With no explanation so far, it’s added even more uncertainty to a rapidly evolving platform.

Roblox’s shift to TextChatService is a big change with good intentions—but it’s caused real concern for parts of the community. While it helps improve safety and aligns with modern moderation needs, legacy content is at risk, and many players are still trying to adapt.
