Sabotage Studios releases Sea of Stars: Throes of the Watchmaker, a free 8+ hour DLC expansion with new classes, areas, co-op play, and a brand-new playable character.
The beloved turn-based RPG Sea of Stars has officially dropped its first and possibly only major DLC expansion, Throes of the Watchmaker — and it’s packed with new content for fans to dive into. Released on May 20, the expansion is free for all players and adds over eight hours of gameplay, building on the award-winning foundation that made Sea of Stars a standout in 2023.
Developed by Sabotage Studios, the game continues to hold a Very Positive rating on Steam and a glowing 97% on OpenCritic, thanks to its stunning art, captivating story, fluid combat system, and unforgettable cast of characters.
What’s New in Throes of the Watchmaker?
This isn’t just a small update—it’s a full-blown expansion. Players will explore Horloge, a carnival-inspired, clockwork world that adds an entirely new flavor to the game’s universe. It’s a post-game adventure, offering players a fresh take on the world after completing the main storyline.
Here’s what’s included in the expansion:
- New areas, dungeons, puzzles, and mini-games
- Fresh enemies and bosses to challenge returning players
- A new character, Arty the Artificer, a laser-shooting robot who joins the party
- New classes for the main characters:
- Zale becomes a Juggler, unlocking unique abilities and combos
- Valere can now play as an Acrobat, bringing new moves and damage types to the table
- Zale becomes a Juggler, unlocking unique abilities and combos
Co-Op and Gameplay Revamps Continue
This expansion builds on the groundwork laid by The Dawn of Equinox update released in November 2024, which introduced:
- Three-player co-op so friends can now play as Valere, Zale, and a third party member
- Combat balancing, difficulty presets, and relic tweaks to improve replayability
- A speedrunner-friendly relic and adjustments to the collectible-hunting Parrot Relic
The Wheels minigame is also getting a refresh, with new character figurines now available to spice things up.
What’s Next for Sea of Stars?
Right now, there’s no official word on whether Sabotage Studios has more content planned after Throes of the Watchmaker. If this turns out to be the final chapter, it’s a strong note to end on.
For those hungry for more from the world of Sea of Stars, the studio’s previous title, The Messenger, offers a different gameplay experience but is loosely connected to the same universe—set far in the future.
Whether you’re diving back in for co-op, new combat styles, or just more of Sabotage’s top-tier storytelling, Throes of the Watchmaker is a must-play for fans of the game.
