Complete the Balm for the Wounded quest in Hollow Knight Silksong. Find Sherma’s location in the Whiteward, defeat enemy waves, and earn a valuable Spool Fragment reward.
Missing Sherma? He’s trapped in the Whiteward after going on a medical supply run. Start by unlocking Songclave, then track him using the trail objects in the Whiteward. Navigate past scissor-wielding enemies, find him cowering in a hidden room behind a breakable wall, then survive waves of tough enemies to rescue him. Reward: Spool Fragment (increases max Silk). It’s a tough rescue mission, but our favorite pilgrim is worth saving!
Poor Sherma. This adorable little pilgrim has the worst luck in all of Pharloom. Just when you think he’s safe in Songclave, he goes and gets himself trapped in one of the most dangerous areas of the game. But hey, that’s what makes him lovable, right? His heart’s in the right place, even if his sense of self-preservation needs work.
The Balm for the Wounded quest is essentially a rescue mission with some genuinely challenging combat thrown in. If you’ve been wondering where Sherma disappeared to, grab your best combat build – you’re going into hostile territory.
The setup: After you unlock Songclave and explore the Whiteward, Sherma decides to venture down there solo to fetch medical supplies for his fellow pilgrims. Sweet gesture, terrible execution. By the time you return to Songclave, he’s nowhere to be found, and there’s a new quest on the Wishwall with his name on it.
This is classic Sherma – always trying to help others, constantly getting in over his head. It’s both endearing and slightly frustrating, like watching a friend make the same mistake repeatedly.
Before you can even start looking for Sherma, you need to hit several progression milestones:
Essential steps:
Yeah, it’s a lot of back-and-forth, but that’s how Silksong handles its quest progression. Think of it as building suspense for the eventual rescue mission.
Once you’ve got the quest active, head back down to the Whiteward. This isn’t just a “walk to a marked location” kind of quest – you’ll need to actually track Sherma through the area using special trail markers.
The tracking route:
The trail system is actually pretty clever – it shows you exactly where Sherma went while also forcing you to navigate the same dangers he faced. It builds empathy for his situation while teaching you the area layout.
The Whiteward is not messing around. This area is packed with some genuinely threatening enemies, and since you’re following a specific route, you can’t always choose the safest path.
Enemy spotlight: Scissor-wielders These masked giants are the real threat here. They deal two masks of damage with their attacks and move faster than you’d expect for their size. The key is using pogo attacks (downward slashes while airborne) to stay mobile and avoid their rapid strikes.
Movement strategy:
Trail following tips:
When you finally find Sherma, the poor guy is absolutely terrified. He’s shivering in a hidden room behind a breakable wall, having witnessed “brutality and faith-challenging horrors” in the Whiteward. The dialogue really sells how traumatized he is by the experience.
But here’s where the quest gets interesting – finding Sherma is only half the battle. The real challenge starts when the enemies show up.
This is where your combat skills get tested. After talking to Sherma, you’ll face waves of challenging enemies in a confined space. It’s like the game is saying, “You want to rescue him? Prove you can protect him.”
Wave 1: Flying Silk Enemies (3 total)
Wave 2: Scissor-wielders (2 total)
The confined space makes this fight particularly challenging. You can’t rely on open-area tactics like kiting or hit-and-run strategies. It’s pure combat skill under pressure.
Build recommendations:
Fight strategy:
Emergency tactics:
After successfully defending Sherma, you’ll earn a Spool Fragment. Two Spool Fragments combine to increase your maximum Silk by one bar, making this a genuinely valuable reward for character progression.
But honestly? The real reward is seeing Sherma safe. The little guy has been through enough trauma – he deserves a happy ending. Plus, he returns to Songclave where he belongs, adding more life to the pilgrim community.
Practical value:
The Balm for the Wounded quest showcases what makes Silksong’s storytelling so effective. It’s not just a fetch quest or a combat challenge – it’s a character-driven rescue mission that makes you care about the outcome.
Sherma’s journey from Songclave to the Whiteward mirrors the player’s own progression through increasingly dangerous areas. His fear and trauma feel genuine, making the rescue feel meaningful rather than mechanical.

The Balm for the Wounded quest perfectly captures what makes Hollow Knight games special – they make you care about characters through actions, not just dialogue. By the time you’re fighting waves of enemies to protect Sherma, you’re genuinely invested in his safety.
It’s also a great test of your combat progression. If you can handle the enemy waves in Sherma’s hiding spot, you’re probably ready for the tougher challenges that lie ahead in Silksong.
My advice? Don’t rush through this quest. Take time to appreciate Sherma’s character development and the environmental storytelling of the Whiteward. It’s one of those moments that makes the world of Pharloom feel alive and worth protecting.
