Silver is one of the most important resources in Subnautica 2 — and one of the most frustrating to find early on. You need it to craft the Standard Air Tank, which nearly doubles your oxygen supply. Without it, every dive stays short and dangerous. This guide shows you exactly where to find Silver, how to farm it in bulk, and what to craft with it first.

Why Silver Is Hard to Find in Subnautica 2

Unlike Titanium and Copper, which are scattered all over the seafloor near your Lifepod, Silver hides deeper inside cave systems. It does not appear on the open ocean floor or near the surface. That is why many players spend their first few hours finding everything except the one thing they need.

There is another problem too. At a glance, Silver looks similar to Titanium — both are grey metallic nodes. You can walk right past Silver without realising what it is if you do not know what to look for.

The good news: once you know which caves to target, Silver stops being a mystery. And when you find one piece, there are almost always more nearby. Silver consistently clusters together on cave walls and floors.

The Two Types of Silver in Subnautica 2

Before you head out, it helps to know what you are looking for:

Small Silver nodes — Loose pieces and medium-sized rocky nodes on cave walls and floors. These can be picked up or broken by hand with no tool needed. This is what you will find in early game caves and what you need for your first Standard Air Tank.
Silver Outcrops — Large ore deposit formations. These show the message “unknown tool required” if you try to interact without the right gear. You need the Sonic Resonator to mine them. They give significantly more Silver per node and are found in areas like the Stalagmite Area southeast of the Lifepod.

In the early game, focus on small nodes first. They get you to the air tank quickly without needing advanced tools.

Best Silver Locations in Subnautica 2

Location 1 — Hidden Cave North of the Lifepod (Best Early Spot)

This is the fastest and most reliable early-game Silver source. To find it:

Swim north from your Lifepod.
Pass the Coral Dome sitting on top of a pillar in the open area, keeping the adaptation tree on your right.
Keep swimming north. You will spot a ruined colony building ahead and slightly to the right.
Before you reach the building, look for a concealed cave entrance to your right, below an overhang with some Jelly Lei hanging from it.
Enter the cave. It is packed with small Silver nodes on the walls and floor — you can grab them all by hand.

This cave is dense with Silver and very forgiving for early runs. Some versions of this cave also contain an air pocket inside, which lets you refill your oxygen mid-dive without having to swim back to the surface. Bring a Portable Locker to carry extra Silver back — you can find one in the cave directly below the Lifepod.

Location 2 — Old Habitat Colony Ruins (~350 Meters North)

The broader Silver hotspot in the early game is the cave network surrounding the Old Habitat colony ruins, roughly 350 meters north of the Lifepod. NOA will direct you toward this area during the story mission to recover Chap’s Blackbox, so you will end up here anyway at some point.

The cave directly next to Chap’s habitation contains Silver as part of the mission route. This area has more nodes and larger deposits than the first cave, but it also takes longer to reach. Scan everything inside the abandoned habitations while you are there — broken machines and furniture can unlock useful base-building blueprints.

Location 3 — Necrolei Fields (~370 Meters North/Northwest)

The Necrolei Fields are easy to identify because of the vibrant pink and blue plants scattered throughout the area. This location sits roughly 370 meters north/northwest of the Lifepod, right above the Wu “Wu” Lianghai marker on your HUD.

Here you will find Silver ore along the ground where the Necrolei plants grow and on the nearby cliff walls. It is one of the more open Silver locations — not entirely inside a cave — which makes navigation easier once you know the landmark.

Location 4 — Stalagmite Area (~200 Meters Southeast, Silver Outcrops)

If you have already unlocked the Sonic Resonator and are ready to mine large deposits, head approximately 200 meters southeast of the Lifepod. You will find a slew of stalagmites rising up from the ocean floor toward the surface. Chap’s Blackbox Signal is nearby, so you will recognise the area.

This spot has multiple Silver Outcrops on the ground near the stalagmites and inside the surrounding caves. One Outcrop can yield 5 or 6 Silver at once — enough for several crafting recipes in a single run.

Location 5 — Northeast Limestone Formations (~320 Meters Northeast)

Another confirmed Silver Deposit sits roughly 320 meters northeast of the Lifepod at about 45 meters depth, on some limestone formations. Large deposits here can respawn periodically, making it a decent revisit spot once you have cleared it once. This location is best reached once you have the Sonic Resonator for full mining value.

Quick Early Option — 120 Meters North of the Lifepod

If you just need a few pieces right away, head 120 meters north from the Lifepod. You will find equipment and a cable along the ground. Follow the cable into a small opening beside a light. Inside, you can pick up Silver nodes from the cave walls. It is a smaller haul, but it is fast and close when you are in a hurry.

How to Identify Silver Caves

Not sure if you have found a Silver cave? Look for these environmental clues before entering:

Jelly Lei plants hanging from an overhang — Common above cave entrances near the first Silver hotspot.
Green glowing flora lining cave entrances — A common visual indicator around Silver-rich cave systems north of the Lifepod.
Pent creatures near the entrance — Their presence can indicate nearby Silver.
Cables on the ocean floor — Following a cable often leads deeper into cave networks with Silver inside.

Once inside, scan the walls and floor carefully. Silver nodes cluster together, so finding one means more are nearby — check every surface before leaving.

Watch Out: Mangal Nibblers

The Silver caves north of the Lifepod are home to small aggressive fish called Mangal Nibblers. They are not deadly, but they constantly harass you during resource collection and can whittle down your health during long farming runs.

Bring Distraction Flares. When Nibblers start swarming, launch a flare away from your position. They usually chase the flare and leave you alone long enough to safely grab your Silver. How to Mine Large Silver Outcrops (Sonic Resonator)

Once you encounter large Silver Outcrops, you need the Sonic Resonator to break them open. This tool blasts large ore deposits apart and automatically collects the pieces.

To unlock the Sonic Resonator blueprint, scan two broken versions found in the world. Once crafted, equip it, swim up to a large Silver Outcrop, charge the tool, and release. One deposit can give you 5 or more Silver at once — a massive upgrade from picking up single nodes by hand.

What Is Silver Used For in Subnautica 2?

Silver is one of the most important materials throughout the entire game — not just the early hours. Here is what you will need it for:

Standard Air Tank

This is your most urgent use. The Standard Air Tank increases your oxygen capacity from 45 to 75, nearly doubling how long you can stay underwater. That unlocks deeper caves, safer farming runs, and access to areas you simply cannot reach with your starting oxygen. Craft this first. It requires 2 Silver, plus Titanium and Rubber.

Wiring Kit

Silver is a core ingredient in Wiring Kits. These feed into Advanced Wiring Kits, System Chips, and Dedicated Cores — all of which are needed to build important base facilities, craft electronics, and ultimately build the Tadpole vehicle. Because Wiring Kits appear in so many downstream recipes, Silver stays useful from the first hour all the way through mid and late game.

Wakemaker

Hydroelectric Turbine

Silver Ingot

Process 3 raw Silver at the Processor to make 1 Silver Ingot. These are needed for advanced recipes including a Moonpool for docking your Tadpole submarine at your base. Do not convert all your raw Silver to ingots straight away — many recipes still use raw Silver, and you need a steady supply of both forms.

Germanium and Other Advanced Materials

Silver feeds into several higher-tier crafting chains as you progress further. Keeping a healthy stockpile saves you repeat farming runs at exactly the wrong moment.

Silver Farming Tips

Craft the Standard Air Tank first. It requires 2 Silver and immediately makes every future Silver run easier. More oxygen means longer cave dives and more material per trip.
Bring a Portable Locker. Silver runs can fill your inventory fast. Having a Portable Locker with you means you can store the overflow and carry it all back in one trip instead of two.
Scan everything in abandoned bases. The cave near Chap’s habitation has Silver but also contains scannable machines and objects that unlock base-building blueprints. Every scan counts.
Silver clusters together. If you find one piece on a cave wall, stop and look around carefully. There are almost always more within a short swim.
Get the Sonic Resonator as soon as you can. The jump from hand-picking individual nodes to blasting a full deposit for 5+ Silver at once is massive for farming efficiency.
Keep a dedicated Silver locker at your base. Separate raw Silver from ingots so you always know what form you have available when a recipe asks for it.
Increase your inventory. Interact with Biobeds when you find them to expand your carry capacity. More space means more Silver per run.
