Surprise! Civilization 7 is Getting a VR Version—And It’s Coming Sooner Than You Think

Big news for Civilization fans—there’s a VR version of Civilization 7 on the way! And the best part? You won’t have to wait forever to play it.

Yep, you read that right. Civilization 7 officially drops for everyone on February 11, but some lucky players who paid for early access have already been building their empires. While the game has gotten solid reviews, there have been a few bugs—don’t worry, fixes are coming.

But let’s forget about all that for a second because the real shocker is that 2K Games just announced a full-on VR version, developed by PlaySide Studios (the folks behind The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners). And it’s launching on Meta Quest 3 and 3S sometime in Spring 2025.

Why announce a VR version days before the main game’s release? No idea. But honestly? It looks pretty awesome, so who cares!

Play Civilization… On Your Coffee Table?

One of the coolest things about the VR version is mixed reality mode. Basically, it uses the Meta Quest’s front-facing cameras to project the game onto your real-world space—like your coffee table! So instead of just looking at a screen, you’ll be able to lean in and examine your cities and units up close, like a living tabletop game.

Here’s how the developers describe it:

“In Civilization 7 – VR, the world of Civilization is brought to life like never before. The map takes shape atop a Command Table that lets you peer down from high above or lean all the way in to appreciate the finer details. Players will chart a course for their people and engage face-to-face with iconic world leaders, reacting as you form alliances or declare war.”

Sounds pretty wild, right?

Not a Fan of Mixed Reality? No Problem!

If mixed reality isn’t your thing, you can play in regular VR mode instead. And the best part? You can switch between the two anytime. Plus, there’s online multiplayer, so you can compete with friends and strangers to rule the world—because world domination is always more fun with company.

So, When Can You Play?

There’s no exact release date yet—just “Spring 2025.” Until then, you’ll have to stick with the regular Civ 7 (which, let’s be real, is still pretty exciting).

What do you think? Would you play Civilization in VR? Or does the idea of ruling an empire in mixed reality sound too powerful? 😆
