Underwater Horror Meets Open World Exploration in A Tale of Silent Depths

Tactical RPG A Tale of Silent Depths dives deep into horror and mystery with its eerie open world, deadly biomes, and lore-rich monster encounters.
A Tale of Silent Depths Is an Open World RPG That Mixes Underwater Exploration With Eldritch Horror
If open-world games have taught us anything, it’s that curiosity can get you killed — and A Tale of Silent Depths is leaning into that idea hard. Revealed at Gamescom LATAM, this upcoming tactical RPG drops players into a post-apocalyptic undersea world full of mystery, terror, and some seriously monstrous sea life.
Set entirely underwater, A Tale of Silent Depths arms you with a sonar-equipped submarine and tells you to go explore. But even that sonar doesn’t work everywhere — especially not in the game’s most dangerous regions. It’s a setting that’s dark, alien, and teeming with Lovecraftian horrors that can literally shake the ocean floor.
A Sinister World Designed for Exploration
Tavern Tale Studios, the dev team behind the game, wanted A Tale of Silent Depths to be a true open-world experience. Lead programmer Eduardo Santos explained in a recent interview that the goal was to create a world where “you can’t really know what’s down there.” In other words, you’re not on rails — you’re free to explore in every direction, even if what’s out there wants to eat you.
The game features a variety of distinct underwater biomes:
- Kelp Jungle
- Acid Wasteland
- Sunken Settlement
- The Dark – a high-level, sonar-dead zone crawling with massive, reality-bending creatures
The further you explore, especially near the edge of the map, the weirder — and deadlier — things get. According to Santos, The Dark is where you’ll really feel like you’ve crossed into territory “humans weren’t meant to be.”
Monsters That Tell Stories
One of the coolest things about A Tale of Silent Depths is how it uses its monsters to guide exploration. Every creature has a place in the game’s lore, and their behavior can lead you to secrets, bosses, and rare loot.
Take the Shrimp Ants, for example. These smaller enemies travel in long lines across the ocean floor, moving resources from place to place. Follow them, and you’ll find their massive hive — and the Ant Queen, a brutal optional boss protecting rare resources and deep lore.
“If you follow them, you get to the great ant hive, and there’s a great ant queen there,” said Santos. “It’s a very dangerous place, very high level. But once you explore there… you can kill the ant queen, or just gather resources.”
The entire design encourages players to take risks, ask questions, and chase mysteries — even when doing so means swimming straight into the jaws of something terrible.
Dive In Now — If You Dare
While the full release is still on the horizon, a demo for A Tale of Silent Depths is available now on Steam. If you’re into tactical combat, open-world exploration, and that creeping dread you get from not knowing what’s lurking just out of sight, this one’s worth checking out.
