There are some fresh mechanics in Mario Kart World that you wonโt fully understand unless you dig into the in-game manualโand letโs be honest, most of us donโt.
Alongside the new Charge Jump, which lets you leap into the air, you can now grind rails and ride walls like a karting pro.
Hereโs a quick breakdown on how to pull off these new moves and why theyโre worth mastering. Also check, How tricks work.

How to Grind Rails in Mario Kart World
There are two main ways to start grinding rails:
- Charge Jump onto the rail
- Drive directly onto a rail that touches the ground
To do a Charge Jump, stop steering and hold down the drift button (R). Your kart will hunker down, building up charge. Once itโs ready, let go of R and youโll launch into the air. If your timingโs good, you can land right onto a railโor even dodge incoming items like Red Shells.
Some rails are already built into the ground or start low before rising up. For those, just drive straight onto the end that touches the ground to hop on and start grinding.
While youโre grinding, hit the Trick button (R) to perform little hops that give you a speed boost. You donโt have to balance or steer while grindingโitโs automatic. Youโll stay on the rail until you either jump off using a side input + Trick, or until the rail ends.

How to Ride Walls in Mario Kart World
Wall riding is another slick move in Mario Kart World. To do it, you need to:
- Charge Jump into a wall
- Or get launched into a wall using a Feather item or a boost ramp
As long as you hit the wall at speed while in the air, youโll automatically start riding it. You can only ride walls for a few seconds, but while you’re up there, youโll build up some solid boost.
It might take a few tries to get the timing and inputs right, but once youโve got it down, itโs super useful. Wall riding doesnโt just help you build boostโitโs also key for reaching hidden paths and secrets scattered throughout the open-world tracks.
Mastering these new mechanics takes a little practice, but itโs totally worth it. Whether you’re dodging items, hunting for shortcuts, or just showing off, learning how to Charge Jump, rail grind, and wallride will give you a serious edge in Mario Kart World.
