Most quests in Where Winds Meet are pretty straightforward—go here, talk to someone, maybe fight a few enemies. But then there’s March of the Dead, a side quest that drops you into a foggy, ghost-infested nightmare version of Ghostlight Market and expects you to figure things out on your own.
I’ll be honest: the first time I attempted this quest, I wandered around that creepy marketplace for way too long before finding even one of the required items. The green lanterns help, but the layout is confusing, and the ghostly soldiers patrolling everywhere don’t make navigation any easier. This guide will walk you through exactly where to find all three ghost items and how to complete this eerie quest without losing your mind.

Starting the Quest: Welcome to Ghost Town in Where Winds Meet
After what starts as a seemingly good deed goes sideways, you’ll find yourself transported to a cursed version of Ghostlight Market beneath Kaifeng. Instead of the bustling (if shady) marketplace you might expect, you’re greeted by poisonous fog and the restless spirits of dead soldiers wandering the streets.
Head to the stairs near your spawn point and speak with Liu Changsheng. He’ll explain that you need to collect three items to proceed:
- A suit of armor
- A helmet
- A spear
The game doesn’t hold your hand here—you’ll need to explore the foggy market while avoiding (or fighting) ghosts to track down these items. Each piece is hidden in a chest scattered throughout the area, and the green lanterns serve as your breadcrumb trail. Let’s break down each location.
Finding the Armor in WWM
From the starting point near Liu Changsheng, turn right.
Follow the path marked by green lanterns. You’ll eventually come across a Boundary Stone and encounter Chang Sheng, a member of the Nine Mortal Ways sect. If you’ve been exploring other questlines in the game, you might recognize this sect from various storylines—they play a significant role in Where Winds Meet’s world.
Don’t stop at Chang Sheng—keep moving forward along the path until you reach a pier by the water. Look to your right, and you’ll notice green lanterns floating above the river. Follow those lanterns carefully (watch your step—falling in the water is annoying, not deadly, but it wastes time).
Continue along the waterside path until you spot a chest sitting on a rock formation near the river. Open it to claim the armor piece.
Quick tip: The green lanterns are your best friends in this quest. Whenever you feel lost, look for the nearest lantern and follow the trail. They’re specifically placed to guide you toward objectives.
Finding the Helmet in WWM
Return to the starting point near Liu Changsheng, then turn left this time.
Follow the path until you reach a market stall where Nan Lugong is hiding. If you talk to him, he’ll actually give you a hint about where to find the spear (we’ll get to that in a moment). For now, focus on the helmet.
To the right of Nan Lugong’s market stall, you’ll see another path branching off. Follow the green lanterns along this route until you encounter a group of ghosts. Do not engage them in combat—you can, but it’s unnecessary and wastes time. These spirits are just set dressing for the quest’s atmosphere.
Behind the group of ghosts is another pier with wooden platforms extending over the water. Check the platforms carefully, and you’ll find another chest containing the helmet.
Finding the Spear in WWM
Head back to Nan Lugong’s market stall.
Behind the stall, you’ll see a flight of stairs leading upward. Climb them. At the top, look to your left—you’ll spot an antique bookstore. Just past the bookstore is another set of stairs going up and to the left, again marked by green lanterns.
Climb these second stairs and turn left when you reach the top. You’ll pass a tree decorated with lit candles (nice touch, very atmospheric). Keep moving forward until you reach a rope bridge with a ghost standing in the middle of it.
Important: Do not cross the bridge.
Instead, continue along the path that runs parallel to the bridge. Keep following it until you see a larger group of ghosts gathered together. Behind this group is a chest—open it to collect the spear.
This was the trickiest item for me to find during my playthrough. The rope bridge is a total red herring, and I wasted a good five minutes fighting ghosts on the other side before realizing I’d gone the wrong way. Save yourself the headache and stick to the main path.
Following the Ghost Procession
Once you’ve collected all three items, return to Liu Changsheng at the starting point. The game will automatically prompt you to equip the complete set of ghost gear—armor, helmet, and spear. Don’t worry about manually equipping each piece; the quest system handles this for you.
Now comes the slightly creepy part: you need to wait for a ghost procession to pass by. These spectral soldiers will march past the starting area periodically. When they do, join the procession and follow them up through the marketplace.
The procession will wind through the foggy streets, eventually stopping near a group of ghost soldiers. When they halt, look for a stone gate nearby and proceed through it. This gate leads to the final confrontation of the quest.

Defeating Zhu Yousheng
Past the stone gate, you’ll enter a bright, colorful cave—a stark contrast to the gloomy marketplace you just left. Waiting for you inside is Zhu Yousheng, the founder of the Nine Mortal Ways sect.
Despite his impressive title, Zhu Yousheng isn’t a particularly difficult boss fight, especially if you’ve already tackled challenges like defeating Elder Gongsun. Here’s how to handle him:
Combat Strategy
- Watch for his attack patterns – Zhu Yousheng telegraphs most of his moves fairly clearly
- Dodge and parry consistently – His attacks hit hard, but the timing windows are generous
- Counter-attack during recovery – After he completes a combo, he has a brief vulnerability window
- Don’t get greedy – Land a few hits, then back off and wait for the next opening
- Use your best skills – If you have Daunting Strike unlocked, it’s useful for closing distance quickly
The fight shouldn’t take more than a few minutes if you stay patient and defensive. If you’re struggling, make sure you have enough healing charges stocked up before entering the cave.
Quest Rewards
Completing March of the Dead grants some seriously worthwhile rewards:
- 5 Inner Arts Custom Note Chest
- 1 Medicinal Tales
- 1 Lv. 3 Ebon Iron
- 30 Echo Jades
- 50 Kaifeng Exploration Points
- 100 Enlightenment Points
- 20,000 Character EXP
- 20,000 Coins
The Inner Arts Custom Note Chests and Echo Jades are particularly valuable, making this quest well worth the effort despite its confusing layout. Echo Jades are currency used in the gacha system, so stockpiling them is always a good idea.
Additional Tips for the Quest
Here are a few things I wish I’d known before starting this quest:
Come prepared for combat. While you can technically avoid most ghost enemies, some fights are unavoidable. Make sure your gear is in decent shape.
Don’t rush the procession segment. If you lose sight of the ghost procession, it will eventually loop back around. Just wait at the starting point.
The fog isn’t actually damaging. It looks ominous, but you won’t take environmental damage from standing in it.
Green lanterns are always reliable. Whenever you’re unsure which direction to go, look for the next green lantern in the sequence.
Explore for bonus loot. While hunting for the three main items, you’ll find additional chests with minor loot scattered around. They’re not required, but free resources are always nice.
