Ambruss Dungeons Evil and Convenience Quest Guide The Blood of Dawnwalker

Ambrus’s Dungeons: Evil and Convenience is one of the Draining Dungeon Court Activities in The Blood of Dawnwalker. It takes you to a blood-draining camp in Briar Sloughs, where you need to fight guards, use Focus Mode to investigate the scene, and then deal with the Chief Jailor inside a locked cabin. There is also a follow-up treasure hunt tied to this quest — this guide covers every step.

    • TL;DR
    • The camp is in Briar Sloughs, just north of the Borescu Commons Shrine.
    • Visit in the morning if you can — a soul inside can be compelled for extra lore.
    • Defeat all guards, then use Focus Mode to find the key in the barn.
    • Unlock the cabin door and face the Chief Jailor — kill or spare him, both give you the Treasure Map: Hidden Stash.
    • Read the ledger to discover Ambrus’s men are betraying him and sending blood to Bakir.
    • The hidden stash is northwest of the camp by a fallen tree.
    • This activity costs 3 Time Segments and contributes to Ambrus’s Anger meter.

What Is Ambrus’s Dungeons: Evil and Convenience?

Ambrus’s Dungeons: Evil and Convenience is part of the Draining Dungeons category of Ambrus Court Activities in The Blood of Dawnwalker. There are three Draining Dungeon activities in total — Judge and Executioner, Evil and Convenience, and Twists and Turns. Each one disrupts Ambrus’s blood-draining operations and pushes his Anger meter higher, which is what you need to unlock his boss fight.

The game has 41 Court Activity Locations split across all three vassals — 14 belonging to Ambrus. You do not need to complete every single one. Doing roughly 75% of Ambrus’s activities is enough to fill his Anger and trigger The Gilded Gauntlet boss quest. Evil and Convenience is one of the more story-rich activities in his set, since it uncovers a betrayal inside his own ranks and hands you a bonus treasure map on top of the standard completion reward.

If you are just getting into the Briar Sloughs region, it is worth pairing this activity with other content nearby. Our guide on the Wisp Treasure Hunt: Watermill Hills quest covers another hidden activity in Briar Sloughs that rewards 100 XP and a skill point with minimal time cost.

Ambrus’s Dungeons Evil and Convenience — Camp Location

The camp you need to reach is in the Briar Sloughs region, located just north of the Borescu Commons Shrine. If you have that shrine unlocked, fast travel there and head north. The camp will be visible ahead of you.

If you have not unlocked the Borescu Commons Shrine yet, approach from any nearby shrine in Briar Sloughs and navigate north through the region. The camp is not hard to spot once you are close — it is an active blood-draining site with guards on patrol.

Best Time to Do This Quest — Day or Night?

You can complete Ambrus’s Dungeons: Evil and Convenience at any time of day or night. However, morning is the recommended time to visit. Here is why.

Inside the camp, there is a torture chamber with the body of a dead guard. During the day — specifically in the morning — you can use the Compel Soul ability to speak with the spirit of this guard and get more detail about what happened at the camp. This gives you extra lore and context about Ambrus’s operations. It does not change the quest outcome, but if you enjoy understanding the world, it is worth seeing.

At night, the compel interaction is still available if your Vampirism skills are developed. But early in the Ambrus questline, many players have not yet built out their night abilities. Going in during the day makes it simpler. For a breakdown of which abilities to prioritise early, see our guide on the best skills to level up in Blood of Dawnwalker.

    Step-by-Step Walkthrough

Step 1 — Defeat All the Guards

As soon as Coen enters the camp, the soldiers will immediately turn hostile. They recognise him as a trespasser and attack on sight. Defeat all the guards before doing anything else. There are several soldiers spread across the camp, so clear the area thoroughly before exploring.

Once the guards are down, loot their bodies. You will find useful items including armor pieces and possibly skill manuals. One of the enemy bodies also carries a document called Directives from Ambrus — a letter with instructions on how to properly drain blood from victims, and a warning to stop watering down the blood barrels to inflate the shipment quantity.

Step 2 — Investigate the Camp with Focus Mode

After clearing the guards, explore the camp using Focus Mode to highlight all interactive objects. Focus Mode reveals yellow-highlighted items and areas of interest that are easy to miss without it. Look for and investigate the following:

    • Barrels of blood — evidence of the draining operation.
    • A ditch full of corpses — the victims of Ambrus’s soldiers.
    • A pile of hay — part of the evidence trail.
    • Torn Banner near the corpses — pick this up.
    • Instrument of Torture — pick this up to the northwest.

The scene tells a grim story: the soldiers were draining victims of their blood and then planning to burn the camp to erase all evidence. After collecting the Torn Banner and Instrument of Torture, follow the blood trail northwest to a torture chamber where a dead guard’s body is found. If you are visiting in the morning, use the items you just collected to compel the guard’s soul and hear what happened from his perspective.

Step 3 — Find the Barn Key

With the investigation done, it is time to open the locked cabin nearby. The key is not on the main building — it is in the barn to the south. Enter the barn, and the key will be on a table inside. Also in the barn is a letter from an angry Ambrus. He is furious because blood barrels are going missing from his shipments. Someone inside his own operation is stealing from him.

Take the key from the table.

Step 4 — Unlock the Cabin and Confront the Chief Jailor

With the barn key in hand, follow the footprints from the barn area to the locked cabin and use the key to open it. Inside, you will meet the Chief Jailor. He is alone and trapped. This is where you make a choice.

Should You Kill or Spare the Chief Jailor?

The Chief Jailor is inside the locked cabin when you open the door. You have two options:

    Kill the Chief Jailor

You fight and defeat him. After the fight, loot his body to find the Treasure Map: Hidden Stash. You also get whatever he was carrying. This is the combat route and it ends the encounter quickly.

    Spare the Chief Jailor

You let him go. In return, he hands you the Treasure Map: Hidden Stash voluntarily and then walks away. No fight needed.

Both choices lead to the same result — you get the Treasure Map: Hidden Stash either way. The difference is just whether you fight him or not. Sparing him is the low-effort option. Killing him is slightly more rewarding in terms of any additional loot from his body, but the key item — the treasure map — is identical regardless.

After dealing with the Chief Jailor, take a look at the ledger on the table inside the cabin. Reading it reveals something important: Ambrus’s own men are betraying him. They have been secretly diverting blood shipments and sending them to Bakir instead. This is the lore payoff of the quest — a crack in the loyalty of Ambrus’s forces that hints at the broader rivalry between the vassals.

Where Is the Hidden Stash Treasure?

Once you have the Treasure Map: Hidden Stash, the location of the treasure will be marked on your map automatically while you are tracking the quest. This makes it easy to find without having to decode anything manually.

The treasure itself is located northwest of the camp. Leave the camp area and head northwest until you reach a fallen tree. Approach the fallen tree and you will find a chest hidden there. Open it to collect:

    • An amulet
    • Some money (Denarius)
    • A letter from Bakir — confirming that the stolen blood barrels were indeed sent to him.

The letter from Bakir is another piece of the broader lore puzzle — it shows that Ambrus’s subordinates were secretly working with a rival vassal behind his back. It is not a quest-critical item but it adds meaningful context to the political tensions between the three vampire lords.

    Quest Rewards and Time Cost

Completing Ambrus’s Dungeons: Evil and Convenience costs 3 Time Segments. That is a standard cost for Court Activities in The Blood of Dawnwalker. Every Court Activity consumes time, so plan your day around what else you want to accomplish before or after this one.

In addition to the loot from the bodies, the hidden stash reward, and the story context, this activity contributes directly to Ambrus’s Anger meter. That meter needs to reach roughly 75% full for his boss quest — The Gilded Gauntlet — to unlock. Evil and Convenience is one of the more substantial contributions to that meter compared to shorter activities.

Where Does This Fit in the Ambrus Questline?

Ambrus’s Dungeons: Evil and Convenience is one of three Draining Dungeon activities in Ambrus’s Court. The full list of his activity categories looks like this:

    • Blood Cellars: Seeing Red, Uninvited, Trouble Brewing
    • Blood Transports: Bloody Business, Roadside Surprise
    • Draining Dungeons: Judge and Executioner, Evil and Convenience, Twists and Turns
    • Leech Collectors: Bounty of the Mire, Wetland Helpers, Unsavoury Solutions
    • Prisoner Transports: Lucky Crossing, Fate’s Mercy
    • Prisoner Processing Camp: Under Watchful Eyes

You need to complete roughly 10 to 11 out of 14 Ambrus activities to reach the Anger threshold that triggers The Gilded Gauntlet. Evil and Convenience is a solid activity to do early in this process because it gives you both Anger progress and a bonus treasure map with a useful reward.

Ambrus is also the recommended first boss to fight before Bakir and Xanthe, due to his lower difficulty level. Getting through his Court Activities quickly and efficiently is the best way to set up the rest of the run. Managing your resources and silver income across this phase also matters — the Svartrau Cathedral Treasury is a nearby high-value location you can visit to stock up on silver and grab key items like the Phial of Xanthe’s Blood when you eventually progress to Svartrau City.

Tips for Ambrus’s Dungeons: Evil and Convenience

    • Visit in the morning for the Compel Soul interaction. The dead guard’s spirit gives you more story context, and the Compel Soul ability works best during daylight in the early game.
    • Use Focus Mode throughout the camp. Yellow-highlighted objects are easy to miss in the clutter of a blood-draining site. Hold down Focus Mode and check every corner before moving on.
    • Loot every guard body. You can pick up armor pieces, skill manuals, and Denarius from the fallen soldiers. Do not rush to the barn until you have cleared the loot.
    • Spare the Chief Jailor if you want a quick finish. The treasure map outcome is the same either way, and skipping the fight saves stamina and health for the rest of the day.
    • Read the ledger in the cabin. It is not a required interaction to complete the quest, but it reveals the Bakir connection and adds depth to the Ambrus storyline.
    • Track the quest after getting the treasure map. The stash location marks automatically on your map while the quest is active. No need to navigate by the map image alone.

If you are working through all Ambrus Court Activities around the same time, our guide on the Under Watchful Eyes quest in Blood of Dawnwalker covers the Prisoner Processing Camp activity that also ties into the Firebrand side quest — two completions for the cost of one visit.

For players still building up their skills before tackling the Briar Sloughs camps, our guide on how to get ability slots in Blood of Dawnwalker explains the fastest way to expand Coen’s skill access, which directly affects how smoothly you handle combat encounters like the Chief Jailor fight.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the Ambrus’s Dungeons: Evil and Convenience camp in The Blood of Dawnwalker?

The camp is in the Briar Sloughs region, just north of the Borescu Commons Shrine. Fast travel to Borescu Commons Shrine and head north from there. The guards will attack Coen on sight as soon as he enters the camp boundary.

Should you kill or spare the Chief Jailor in Evil and Convenience?

It does not matter for the key reward — both choices give you the Treasure Map: Hidden Stash. Killing him means looting it from his body after a fight. Sparing him means he hands it over willingly and leaves without a fight. The treasure map location and contents are identical either way.

Where is the Hidden Stash treasure in Ambrus’s Dungeons: Evil and Convenience?

The hidden stash is northwest of the camp by a fallen tree. With the Treasure Map: Hidden Stash in your inventory and the quest tracked, the location marks automatically on your map. Head northwest from the camp, find the fallen tree, and open the chest. Inside you get an amulet, Denarius, and a letter from Bakir revealing who has been stealing Ambrus’s blood shipments.

How many Ambrus Court Activities do you need to complete?

You need to complete roughly 75% of Ambrus’s 14 Court Activities — around 10 to 11 of them — to fill his Anger meter and unlock The Gilded Gauntlet boss quest. You do not need to do all 14. Evil and Convenience counts as one full activity and contributes a solid chunk of Anger progress.
