If you’ve been grinding your way through the Rust Belt and living for those Expedition resets, here’s some news that’s going to sting a little. Embark Studios has officially confirmed that Arc Raiders Expeditions are being paused until early 2027, giving the team time to rework the system from the ground up following months of community feedback. The fifth and upcoming Expedition will be the last one you see for a good while.
The announcement landed on August 22 via the official Arc Raiders website, and while the studio tried to frame it as a positive step, the community response has been understandably mixed. Nobody loves being told the thing they came back to the game for is going away — even if it’s to make it better.
Expedition 5 Is Still Happening — Here’s the Timeline
Before the panic sets in fully, Embark is still running one final Expedition before the lights go off. Expedition 5 opens September 8 and closes September 29, giving you a three-week window to get your Caravan sorted, gather the resources you need, and register for departure. There’s no separate last-call period this time around, so don’t sleep on it thinking you’ll have a second chance.
If you’ve been on the fence about doing your first Expedition, or you’ve been putting off running another cycle, this is the one. Once that September 29 window closes, that’s it until 2027.
Embark also confirmed a few important logistical details for the pause period:
- Consecutive buffs carry over — Any buffs you’ve earned will persist during the gap between Expeditions, so nothing is lost there.
- Zenith Outfit for completionists — Players who have wrapped up all five Expeditions will receive the Zenith outfit as a reward.
- Incomplete Caravans converted — If your Caravan isn’t fully completed, it won’t just disappear. It’ll be replaced with Ermal Vouchers of equal value that can be spent on Ermal offers, ARC Parts, firearms trades, or sold for Coin.
Why Embark Is Pulling the Plug on Expeditions for Now
The studio was pretty direct in its announcement about what drove this decision. Embark said it’s been carefully listening to feedback since Expeditions launched, and while they’ve made tweaks along the way, they’ve come to realize the problems are too deep for quick patches.
The specific pain points they called out were tight departure windows, a reward structure that doesn’t feel worth the grind, and poor accessibility for new players who are still trying to catch up. Those are systemic issues — the kind you can’t fix by adjusting a few numbers. They require a genuine rethink of how the whole system is built.
That’s a pretty honest admission from a live-service studio, and credit where it’s due for not just slapping a band-aid over it and calling it an update. But the reality is that Expeditions have been the main reason a lot of endgame players keep returning to Arc Raiders, and removing that loop for potentially six months or more is a bold move that carries real risk.

Weekly Trials Are Also Going on Pause
Adding to the disruption, Embark has also confirmed that weekly Trials will be suspended starting September 22, 2026. The pause runs for two weeks and Trials are expected to return on October 8 — which, not coincidentally, is also the launch date for the Frozen Trail update.
So between the Expedition pause and the Trials break, the back half of September is going to feel noticeably quieter in the Rust Belt than veterans are used to. For players who rely on Trials for weekly progression variety, that’s another hit on top of an already frustrating announcement.
What the Community Actually Thinks
Reactions across Reddit and social media have been pretty much what you’d expect — a mix of resigned acceptance from long-timers and genuine frustration from players who feel like they’re constantly waiting for the game to deliver on its potential.
One Reddit user with over 400 hours put it plainly: they hadn’t touched the game in months, called it one of the best games ever made, and said Embark keeps dropping the ball — hoping for a huge October surprise but not holding their breath.
Others have been more measured. Some players who haven’t even done their first Expedition yet say they’re fine waiting longer if it means the system will actually be worth doing when it comes back. The fact that Embark specifically mentioned new player accessibility in its announcement at least signals they’re aware the current setup has a significant barrier to entry for anyone joining mid-cycle.
There’s also the concern a lot of endgame players are sitting with — Expeditions have been described by some as the only real progression loop keeping them engaged at the level cap. Without them, it’s not entirely clear what the most dedicated Raiders are supposed to do for the next several months beyond waiting for Frozen Trail.
Frozen Trail Is Coming October 8 and It Needs to Deliver
The timing of all this puts enormous pressure on Frozen Trail, which drops October 8, 2026. Embark has been billing it as the biggest update Arc Raiders has ever received, and based on what they’ve revealed, the scope does look substantial.
The headline addition is a brand-new map — a large, snowy, multi-layered environment set beyond the mountains at the edge of the Rust Belt. It’s confirmed to include villages, factories, and an observatory, all long abandoned, with verticality that takes players both above and below ground. Alongside the new map comes a new ARC Operation built for experienced Raiders, fresh enemy types ranging from smaller disruptors to a massive new ARC threat, the Outpost system, Skill Tree adjustments, new weapons and gadgets, and expanded progression systems for players who’ve already maxed out their Raiders.
Embark has also teased that Frozen Trail will begin to pull back the curtain on where the ARC actually come from — some actual story momentum for a game that has been light on narrative context since launch.
All of that sounds genuinely exciting on paper. But Frozen Trail carries extra weight now that it’s arriving alongside a prolonged Expedition drought, and a lot of the goodwill Embark needs to earn back will hinge on whether this update actually feels like the “biggest update yet” they’ve been promising — or whether it lands as another case of lofty promises and underwhelming execution.
The Bigger Picture for Arc Raiders
It’s worth zooming out a little on where Arc Raiders actually stands right now. The game moved 16 million copies by May 2026, which is a genuinely impressive number for an extraction shooter, and it earned a 9/10 from IGN at launch for its polished gunplay and satisfying grind. The foundation is clearly there.
But the post-launch roadmap has been a bumpy ride. The shift to just two major updates per year — announced in May — already had portions of the playerbase feeling like content was too thin on the ground. The last new map before Frozen Trail, Riven Tides, arrived back in April. Add in the Expedition and Trials pauses, and it’s easy to see why some veterans feel like they’re spending more time waiting than playing.
Embark has consistently shown it’s listening to feedback, and the Expedition overhaul announcement specifically cited the community’s exact complaints. That’s the behavior of a studio that genuinely wants to get it right. But at some point, good intentions need to translate into a product that keeps people around between updates, and the next few months will test how much patience the Arc Raiders community actually has.
More details on what the revamped Expeditions will look like are promised for September, so there’s at least something concrete to look forward to before the system goes dark. Whether the changes are sweeping enough to justify the wait is the question everyone will be asking when early 2027 rolls around.
