Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game has received its second major post-launch update, and it’s a meaningful one. Gameplay Group International released the patch on August 7, 2026, for PC via Steam and PS5, bringing the highly requested Replay Takeover feature, re-enabling crossplay between the two platforms after a brief maintenance window, delivering further PS5 performance improvements, and fixing a range of character-specific bugs across the roster. The Xbox version remains on hold, and Ranked Mode still hasn’t arrived — but the team is clearly moving quickly on everything else.

Replay Takeover — What It Is and Why It Matters

The headlining addition of this update is Replay Takeover, a feature that fighting game players will recognise immediately from Street Fighter 6, where it’s been one of the most praised tools in that game’s already strong suite of training and review features. The concept is simple but powerful: instead of passively watching a replay, you can pause at any point and jump in as one of the players to take control from that exact moment.

The practical applications for this are significant. If you’re watching a replay of a match you lost and you want to understand what you should have done during a specific scramble or when your opponent landed a punish, you can freeze the frame right before it happens and try different options yourself. It turns replay review from a passive study tool into an active one, which is exactly what higher-level players need to actually improve rather than just re-watch losses. It’s also useful for labbing specific defensive scenarios — you can recreate the exact situation a match created and grind responses in a way that Training Mode’s preset scenarios can’t always replicate.

For a game targeting a competitive audience while also welcoming Avatar fans who may be newer to fighting games, Replay Takeover is a genuinely valuable addition. It lowers the skill floor for learning by making difficult concepts experiential rather than theoretical.

A new PS5/Steam update is now available! Patch contents include the following:

    – Replay Takeover
    – PS5 performance improvements
    – Crossplay across Steam and PS5 enabled
    – Localization fixes
    – Minor bug fixes

Crossplay Re-Enabled Between PC and PS5

Crossplay between Steam and PS5 is back online after being briefly disabled earlier this week for maintenance. The feature had already been part of the game’s promise from launch, but needed a maintenance window tied to this update to re-enable properly. It’s worth noting that the Xbox version of Avatar Legends is still delayed — the game was pulled from its Xbox launch hours before release due to a single unresolved technical issue the team is still working through with Microsoft. No timeline for the Xbox release has been confirmed yet, meaning crossplay currently only covers Steam and PS5.

    Full August 2026 Patch Notes

    New Features

    • Added Replay Takeover — pause any replay and jump in as either player to practice from that exact moment
    • Re-enabled crossplay between Steam and PS5
    • Additional PS5 performance improvements
    • Fixed various localization issues across supported languages
    • Various minor bug fixes

    All Characters

    • Standardized hurtboxes for knockdowns across the full cast — previously similar but slightly inconsistent, leading to incongruent behavior across matchups
    • Fixed bugs where certain moves would loop at unintended positions during Wind Summon (Aang and Kyoshi’s pushing and pulling wind)

    Azula

    • Removed ability to jump cancel into stand throw from Ignition Step (Run) (F+Flow)

    Katara

    • Fixed bug where she was able to cancel the startup of Cascading Strike (QCF+ATK) into EX Water Whip Stance (QCB+2ATK)
    • Fixed bug where air Water Whip (j.QCB+ATK) and Frigid Snap (j.QCF+ATK) would store improper travel speeds

    Nightmare Korra

    • Removed unintended Hard Knockdown from Wildfire Splitter (QCB+B)

    Sokka

    • Fixed Boomerang projectile not scaling properly in combos — EX Boomerang retains better scaling for now
    • Fixed Boomerang staying active in cinematic supers even if Sokka was hit, causing unintended behavior
    • Fixed 10+ Sword Level setting the opponent’s size on hit, which led to some notably large character results

    Toph

    • Fixed weird camera behavior when pulling opponent with Shifting Earth (B+Flow) while standing next to a Champ’s Ring wall near camera corner

    Zaheer

    • Fixed behavior with Critical Hit ground throw hitting at the same time as Ghazan’s boomerang
    • Fixed behavior with Ming-Hua losing collision on whiffed throws
    • Fixed ability to restand opponents with j.C if hitting them at the same time as Ming-Hua’s OTG hit

    Zuko

    • Fixed Combustion Boost (Upward) (j.Flow) carrying much more momentum than intended

What These Character Changes Actually Mean

The balance changes in this patch are targeted rather than sweeping, but a few are worth unpacking for players who want to understand the competitive implications.

Azula’s jump cancel from Ignition Step into stand throw was almost certainly a frame-trap exploit that the designers didn’t intend. Removing it tightens her pressure game without eliminating what makes her strong, which is the right call at this stage of the game’s competitive life.

Katara’s fixes address two separate bugs that were likely giving her unintended combo extensions and travel behaviors. The EX Water Whip Stance cancel from Cascading Strike’s startup sounds like it was creating a plus-on-everything pressure situation that bypassed intended gaps.

Nightmare Korra’s unintended Hard Knockdown removal from Wildfire Splitter is significant — Hard Knockdowns create oki situations that can loop into strong mixups. Removing an unintended one from a move that probably wasn’t supposed to carry that property reins in one of the more powerful characters in the current roster.

Sokka received the most targeted attention in this patch, with three separate boomerang-related fixes. The scaling fix is the most competitively relevant — improper scaling in combos can make a character significantly stronger or weaker than intended, and Sokka’s Boomerang being a combo extender with broken scaling was likely contributing to damage numbers the team didn’t sign off on.

Zaheer’s fixes are almost entirely about his assist characters behaving correctly rather than about Zaheer’s own moveset. Ming-Hua losing collision on whiffed throws and the restand issue with j.C are the kind of assist interaction bugs that can create situations no other character in the game can reproduce, which is why they tend to get picked up quickly once discovered in post-launch competitive play.

What’s Still Missing — Xbox, Ranked Mode and the Road Ahead

Two significant gaps remain. The Xbox version still has no confirmed release date. The delay happened hours before launch due to a single technical issue the team is working through with Microsoft, and the studio’s last public statement indicated they’re actively resolving it but couldn’t commit to a timeline. Nintendo Switch launched alongside PC and PS5 but in a notably less complete state, which was flagged in early reviews.

Ranked Mode was promised but is still absent from the game. Along with Spectator Mode, improved lobbies, and other standard competitive features, Ranked is one of the missing pieces that reviewers flagged as a disappointment at launch. The team has acknowledged these gaps publicly but hasn’t given a specific date for when they’ll arrive.

On the content side, things are in a better place. Season 1 DLC has a confirmed roster of Bolin, Chief Lin Beifong, Uncle Iroh, and Ty Lee, with a fifth slot going to a fan vote between Amon, King Bumi, Asami Sato, Kuvira, and Tenzin. A free roster addition is also coming this fall — Tagah from the Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender film, announced as a surprise post-launch addition. No DLC release dates have been confirmed yet.
