Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game Now Launches July 23
Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game was originally set to release on July 2, but developer Gameplay Group International announced a three-week delay back on June 3, pushing the launch to July 23 instead. According to the team’s official statement, the extra time isn’t about fixing a broken game, it’s about adding content that wasn’t part of the original plan. The studio said they’re taking extra time to “cook up an exceptional Avatar adventure” with bonus content nobody was expecting, though exactly what that content is hasn’t been detailed yet.
To soften the blow of the delay, Gameplay Group is giving pre-order customers a way to jump in early anyway. A closed beta will run from July 2 to July 5, which lines up with the game’s original release date, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, with full cross-play support between those platforms. Notably, the beta won’t be available on Nintendo Switch 2 or the original Switch, even though both platforms will support the full game at launch.

What’s In The Avatar Legends Launch Roster
Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game is a 1v1 2D fighter that pulls characters from both the original Avatar: The Last Airbender series and its sequel, The Legend of Korra. The 12-character launch roster includes Aang, Korra, Zuko, Katara, Toph, Sokka, Azula, Ozai, Zaheer, Kyoshi, and separate Avatar State versions of both Aang and Korra, which play as their own distinct characters rather than simple alternate skins.
The closed beta specifically gives players early access to Sokka and Azula, marking their first time being playable in any build of the game so far. Considering Sokka’s the only non-bender on the roster, he’s expected to play very differently from the rest of the elemental-focused cast, which should make for an interesting wildcard pick once the beta goes live.

Standard Vs Deluxe Edition: What You Actually Get
One of the bigger surprises here is just how affordable Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game is compared to most modern fighters. The Standard Edition runs $29.99 and includes all 12 launch characters, Story Mode, Arcade Mode, Training Mode, Combo Trials, Character Lessons, Gallery Mode, and online play across ranked, casual, and lobby formats.
For players who want more, the Deluxe Edition costs $49.99 and adds a digital soundtrack, a digital art book, unique HUD options, and a Year 1 Pass that unlocks five additional post-launch characters along with extra color variants as they roll out.
Pre-Order Bonuses Are Actually Worth Considering
Beyond the closed beta access, pre-ordering Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game comes with a handful of cosmetic extras. That includes the Samurai Appa skin, along with exclusive color variants for Aang, Korra, Zuko, Katara, Toph, and Sokka. Pre-order customers also get to vote on which character ends up filling one of the slots in the Year 1 Pass, which is a fun way to get the community directly involved in shaping the post-launch roster.
Since the beta runs well before the full release, players who pre-order get a real opportunity to test the game first. If it’s not clicking, there’s still plenty of time to cancel before July 23 actually hits.

Who’s Actually Making This Game
The studio behind Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game has an interesting backstory of its own. The project was originally in development under Swedish publisher Maximum Entertainment before being quietly canceled back in 2024. It was later picked up and revived by Gameplay Group International, a studio founded by Victor Lugo, a former lead designer on Killer Instinct at Iron Galaxy, and Philip Mayes, the former managing director at Mighty Kingdom.
Gameplay Group is also behind Them’s Fightin’ Herds, a fighting game with a passionate community of its own, which gives a bit more confidence that the team understands what fighting game fans actually want from a title like this.
A Big Year For Avatar Fans Overall
The fighting game isn’t the only thing keeping Avatar: The Last Airbender fans busy right now. Season 2 of Netflix’s live-action Avatar series is set to premiere June 25, and the animated film Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender is heading to Paramount+ on October 9. That film already leaked online ahead of release, which obviously isn’t ideal for the people who worked on it, but early reactions from fans who saw the leak have actually been overwhelmingly positive, which bodes well for its eventual Paramount+ debut.
There’s also been ongoing confusion around the rumored Avatar: The Last Airbender AAA RPG, with conflicting reports on whether it’s been canceled or is still quietly moving forward. Until there’s official word on that front, Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game looks like the best bet for fans wanting a proper new game to sink their teeth into this summer.
