What Is the Spooky Chess League in Clash Royale?

Spooky Chess is a limited-time competitive league mode. Instead of the usual King Tower and two Princess Towers, your base starts filled with troops arranged like chess pieces.

Your King Tower is protected by a row of Royal Recruits at the front. On either side of the King Tower, you have an Executioner, Dark Prince, and a Bomber. A Mother Witch acts as the Queen piece. Two Dark Princes also spawn automatically from both lanes to put pressure on your opponent.

There is also no river dividing the arena. That changes everything. Troops can reach the other side much faster. This means you are constantly under pressure, and the battlefield is always crowded with units.

Because of how crowded the field gets, splash damage cards are extremely powerful here. Single-target troops struggle to make much impact on their own.

You can download and play Clash Royale on the Google Play Store if you haven’t already.

    Spooky Chess League Rewards

The event runs for 14 days, from October 5 to October 19, 2026. Each win earns you one point and a free reward. Here is the full reward breakdown:

    • Wins 1 to 14: alternating Gold Crates and Lucky Chests
    • Win 15: Spooky Chess Badge Level 1
    • After 15 wins: you enter the competitive ranked league
    • Top 10,000 on the global leaderboard: Spooky Chess Badge Level 2

Losses do not cost you anything in the casual section. But once you enter the competitive league, your placement on the leaderboard matters.

Banned Cards in Spooky Chess League

You must build a special event deck. Several strong cards are banned from deckbuilding because they made older versions of this mode too easy to abuse. The banned cards for October 2026 are:

    • Miner
    • Earthquake
    • Fireball
    • Poison
    • Goblin Drill
    • Void
    • Rocket
    • Lightning
    • Royal Recruits

Most of these are direct tower-damaging spells or tunnelling troops. Without them, the meta shifts toward big pushes, splash spells, and area-denial troops. Keep this in mind when building your deck. For a broader look at the current meta, check the Clash Royale meta decks guide.

Best Clash Royale Spooky Chess League Decks

Here is a quick overview of all five recommended decks before we go into the details:

    Deck NameAvg Elixir CostBest For
Evo Witch + Furnace + Golden Knight3.3Aggressive cycling, lane pressure
Goblinstein + Phoenix + Cannon Cart3.7Sustained push combos
Hero Bowler + Evo Witch + Skele Giant3.7Heavy front-line beatdown
Evo Mega Knight + Hero Wizard + Musketeer3.6Tower-clearing spam, defensive control
Archer Queen + Hog Rider + Evo Skele Army3.0Cheap, fast cycling attacks

Deck 1: Evo Witch + Furnace + Golden Knight + Mirror + Arrows

Evo Witch Furnace Golden Knight Mirror Arrows

This is one of the cheapest and most consistent decks for Spooky Chess League. The core combo is Witch Evolution, Furnace Evolution, and Golden Knight.

The Evo Witch and Evo Furnace constantly spawn smaller units, including a Dark Prince, which keeps the pressure up in both lanes. When a push builds momentum, drop a Golden Knight and a Flying Machine behind to supercharge it and break through the opponent’s chess piece wall.

Arrows and Goblin Curse handle squishy threats efficiently. Goblin Curse is especially fun here because it converts enemy troops into your own Goblins mid-fight. Vines are great for grounding flying units before they reach your King Tower. Mirror lets you duplicate your best spell or troop at the perfect moment.

Cards in this deck: Furnace Evolution, Golden Knight, Witch Evolution, Flying Machine, Arrows, Goblin Curse, Vines, Mirror

    Average elixir: 3.3

This deck works well for players who prefer a fast, pressure-heavy style. If you enjoy cycling quickly and staying aggressive, also look at Clash Royale best cycle decks for more options.

Deck 2: Goblinstein + Phoenix + Spirit Empress + Cannon Cart + Mirror

Goblinstein Phoenix Spirit Empress Cannon Cart Mirror
Goblinstein Phoenix Spirit Empress Cannon Cart Mirror

This deck builds around an undying combo. Goblinstein, Phoenix, and Spirit Empress work together to create a push that keeps regenerating. Phoenix respawns when killed. Spirit Empress can respawn as a smaller version. Goblinstein is sturdy and deals heavy damage. Together, they are very hard to fully shut down.

The combo is expensive to set up, but the payoff is massive. Once it connects on a lane, the enemy towers take serious punishment.

Cannon Cart plays a key defensive role. It can stop incoming pushes and then anchor itself as a stationary cannon to protect your King Tower. Pair it with Evo Zap to reset enemy Evolutions and stall incoming units.

Arrows, Vines, and Mirror round out the spell suite. Mirror is particularly valuable here because you can duplicate Goblinstein for a double push.

Cards in this deck: Zap Evolution, Goblinstein, Phoenix, Spirit Empress, Cannon Cart, Arrows, Vines, Mirror

    Average elixir: 3.7

This is a strong beatdown-style deck. For similar strategies on regular ladder, see our best beatdown decks guide.

Deck 3: Hero Bowler + Evo Witch + Skeleton Giant + Flying Machine + Mirror

Hero Bowler + Evo Witch + Skeleton Giant + Flying Machine + Mirror
Hero Bowler + Evo Witch + Skeleton Giant + Flying Machine + Mirror

This is arguably the strongest deck in the list for pure pushing power. The front line is a Skeleton Giant, which draws attention and drops bombs when it dies. Behind it comes Hero Bowler, who can lob boulders all the way to the King Tower even from mid-arena. Evo Witch provides continuous splash support behind both of them.

A smart trick with this deck: mirror-clone the Skeleton Giant to drop two bombs simultaneously. This wipes out large groups of the opponent’s chess pieces in one go.

The Flying Machine hovers above the main push and provides extra ranged damage. Arrows and Vines protect your push from spells and flying units. Mirror again gives flexibility for duplicating your best push cards mid-battle.

Cards in this deck: Zap Evolution, Hero Bowler, Witch Evolution, Skeleton Giant, Flying Machine, Arrows, Vines, Mirror

    Average elixir: 3.7

If you want to dive deeper into how Hero Bowler works in different situations, check our Hog Rider deck guide for comparison on how tanky-support combos work in this game.

Deck 4: Evo Mega Knight + Hero Wizard + Evo Musketeer + Bandit + Mirror

Evo Mega Knight + Hero Wizard + Evo Musketeer + Bandit + Mirror
Evo Mega Knight + Hero Wizard + Evo Musketeer + Bandit + Mirror

If you love playing big, board-clearing units, this deck is for you. Evo Mega Knight jumps onto the battlefield and flings nearby troops away on landing. In Spooky Chess, where the field is always packed with chess piece troops, his jump damage is devastating.

Hero Wizard provides support fire and area-of-effect spells from behind. Evo Musketeer adds long-range DPS and can target units across the full lane. She can clean up troops that survive the Mega Knight’s landing.

Bandit is your fast-gap-closer. She dashes past troops and can reach the King Tower quickly when the field clears slightly. This makes her an excellent follow-up after a big Mega Knight push clears the way.

Zap helps reset Evolutions and stall swarm troops. Arrows and Vines handle the usual aerial and swarm threats. Mirror lets you double up on Mega Knight or Musketeer for surprise double-lane pressure.

Cards in this deck: Musketeer Evolution, Hero Wizard, Mega Knight Evolution, Bandit, Zap, Arrows, Vines, Mirror

    Average elixir: 3.6

This style suits players who like control-oriented play. For more control-focused approaches on regular ladder, see our best control decks guide.

Deck 5: Archer Queen + Evo Skeleton Army + Evo Giant Snowball + Hog Rider + Ice Spirit

This is the cheapest deck on the list at just 3.0 average elixir. It is also the only deck here that does not use Mirror. That makes it easier to cycle fast and put constant pressure on the opponent.

The plan is simple: deploy Evo Skeleton Army and Hog Rider together as the main push. Drop Archer Queen right behind them for ranged support fire. The Archer Queen is great in this mode because of her invisibility ability, which lets her dodge incoming threats while dealing damage.

Ice Spirit and Royal Delivery stall and slow down incoming enemy pushes. Evo Giant Snowball pushes troops back and slows everything it hits — great for resetting a dangerous enemy formation.

Arrows handle swarms and smaller threats. Vines ground flying units. Keep cycling back to Hog Rider and Skeleton Army to maintain relentless pressure on both lanes.

Cards in this deck: Skeleton Army Evolution, Archer Queen, Giant Snowball Evolution, Hog Rider, Ice Spirit, Arrows, Vines, Royal Delivery

    Average elixir: 3.0

This deck plays a lot like traditional Hog cycle. If you want more from this archetype, read our Hog Rider deck guide and the dedicated Hog Rider strategy breakdown.

Best Strategy for Spooky Chess League

The tactics you use in regular Clash Royale do not always apply here. Here are a few key adjustments to make:

    Always Use Splash Damage

The board is always full. Single-target troops get overwhelmed quickly. Splash-hitting cards like Evo Witch, Arrows, Giant Snowball, and Zap are your best friends here. Every deck above includes multiple splash options for this exact reason.

Build Pushes Behind Your Pawn Line

Use your starting row of Royal Recruits as a temporary shield. Drop your heavy troops or heroes just behind them and let the pawns absorb early hits while your push builds momentum.

    Use Mirror Wisely

Mirror is in four out of five of these decks. Do not burn it early. Save it to double your most impactful card at a critical moment — whether that is copying a Skeleton Giant for double bombs, cloning Goblinstein for two-lane pressure, or mirroring a spell to clear a big threat.

    Do Not Overcommit Elixir

Even with no river, the match can swing fast. If you spend all your elixir on a push and it fails, you have nothing left to defend. Elixir management is just as important here as anywhere else in Clash Royale.

    Target the King Tower Early

Cards like Hero Bowler can reach the King Tower from mid-range. This is a huge advantage in this mode. If you can chip the King Tower down while your opponent is distracted defending elsewhere, you can win without needing a clean tower destroy.

Which Spell Cards Are Best in Spooky Chess League?

Arrows and Vines are the two most common spells in this meta and for good reason. Arrows clear out groups of small troops in an instant. Vines ground flying units that would otherwise pass over your pawn line and dive straight for your towers.

Both of these spells appear in all five recommended decks. If you are building your own Spooky Chess deck from scratch, always include at least one of these two.

How to Get the Spooky Chess League Badge

There are two badges available this event:

    • Badge Level 1: Reach 15 wins on the League Road (casual section)
    • Badge Level 2: Finish inside the top 10,000 on the global leaderboard in the competitive league

The Level 1 badge is very achievable. Just keep playing and winning. The Level 2 badge is for serious competitive players. You will need a strong deck and consistent play over the full two-week window to place in the top 10,000.

Focus on maximising wins from October 5 to October 19. You can check your live rank directly in the game’s league screen — that is the most accurate and up-to-date number to trust.

Tips for Beginners Entering Spooky Chess League

If this is your first time playing Spooky Chess, it can feel chaotic. Here is how to settle in faster:

    • Start with Deck 5 (Archer Queen + Hog + Evo Skele Army) — it is the cheapest and easiest to understand
    • Focus on reaching 15 wins first before worrying about leaderboard placement
    • Watch how your opponent’s chess piece troops move before making big pushes
    • Do not panic when the board gets crowded — use your splash spells to control it

    Final Thoughts

The Spooky Chess League is one of the most fun and chaotic events in Clash Royale. The crowded battlefield, no river, and automatic spawning troops make every match feel different from normal ladder.

Pick any deck from this list based on your playstyle. If you like fast cycling, go with Deck 5. If you prefer big powerful pushes, try Deck 2 or 3. All five have been built specifically around the banned card list and the unique demands of this mode.

Get your 15 wins for the Badge Level 1, then push hard for the top 10,000 if you want the Level 2 badge. The event ends October 19, 2026 — so do not wait too long to get started.
