If you had September 17 marked on your calendar for Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4, it’s time to update that. Developer KING Art Games and publisher Deep Silver confirmed on August 13, 2026 that the game has been pushed back to December 3, 2026 — a delay of roughly ten weeks from the original launch date. Commander Edition owners still get early access, moving from the original window to November 30 — three days ahead of the standard release. Alongside the delay, the studio released an updated Year One content roadmap and confirmed a 10% pre-order discount on both editions is now live.
Creative director Jan Theysen explained the decision in a video message: “As we approached the final stages of development, we saw an opportunity to further enhance Dawn of War 4 and deliver the quality of experience we’ve always envisioned. The additional time will allow us to continue optimising performance, resolving bugs, and applying further polish to ensure players have the best possible experience from day one.” He added that the community’s response during playtests has been “amazing,” and that the feedback gathered has been directly shaping development — but more time was needed to actually incorporate it properly before shipping.
Why the Delay Happened
Theysen said the delay is for the sake of more polish, specifically: “We know from your feedback that the game feels right, and we captured what makes Dawn of War so special. So why delay it? It’s because we need the extra weeks to get more of your feedback into the game, to fix bugs, improve performance, and polish the experience. We want to deliver a game that lives up to our ambitions and to your expectations.”
That’s a fairly standard delay justification, but Dawn of War’s history makes it carry a little more weight than usual. The franchise has been dormant since Dawn of War 2: Retribution in 2011 — fifteen years — and the previous mainline attempt, Dawn of War 3 in 2017, was a divisive departure from the series’ roots that fractured the community. KING Art is explicitly positioning Dawn of War 4 as a return to what made the original games work, and getting that landing wrong on day one would be a much bigger setback than a two-and-a-half-month delay. PC Gamer’s Fraser Brown, who played a skirmish preview build last year, described the experience as “an absolute blast” and expressed confidence in KING Art’s approach — but also noted he’d been craving more time with the game since. A few more months of polish on a fifteen-year franchise revival is not an unreasonable trade.
What’s in Dawn of War 4 at Launch
For anyone less familiar with the game, here’s what arrives on December 3:
- Four playable factions: Space Marines (Blood Ravens and Dark Angels chapters), Orks, Necrons, and the Adeptus Mechanicus — making their Dawn of War debut as a fully playable faction for the first time in the series
- 70+ campaign missions in the flagship story co-written by Black Library author John French, set on the planet Kronus and following Captain Cyrus and Chief Librarian Jonah Orion of the Blood Ravens
- Last Stand mode — the beloved wave-survival co-op mode from Dawn of War 2, returning with updated commanders
- Skirmish mode with configurable AI battles
- Multiplayer: 1v1, 2v2, and 3v3 competitive matches
- Expanded Sync Kill system delivering more melee combat detail than any previous entry
KING Art describes the core gameplay as a direct return to Dawn of War 1’s formula — base building, squad specialisation, resource control — rather than the hero-unit focused approach of Dawn of War 3 that split opinion so sharply.
The Updated Year One Roadmap
The delay has cascaded into a revised post-launch content schedule. Here’s the full Year One roadmap as updated:
- Early 2027: Crusade Mode launches alongside Map Pack 1. Crusade is the long-form campaign progression mode that was a highlight of Dawn of War 2, and its return is one of the most-requested features from the community.
- Mid 2027: Lord Ahmnok added to Last Stand and Crusade, plus Map Pack 2.
- Just ahead of Spring 2027: Blood Ravens story prologue — a narrative chapter that expands the campaign’s lore around one of the franchise’s most beloved factions.
- After Spring 2027: Map Pack 3 and the Mission Editor — giving players the tools to build and share their own maps and scenarios.
- Summer 2027: The flagship post-launch content drop — Guzcutta added to Last Stand Crusade, Map Pack 4, and the major story expansion Aftermath, which introduces a new faction. The Aftermath expansion represents the largest single post-launch content addition in the roadmap, effectively functioning as a full DLC expansion.
No specific dates within those windows have been confirmed yet — the roadmap gives relative timing rather than fixed release dates, which is standard practice for post-launch content scheduled this far in advance.
The September Window It’s Escaping
There’s a practical strategic element to this delay that’s worth acknowledging. September 17 was already an extraordinarily crowded launch date. The shift also pushes Dawn of War 4 away from a stacked September that included Marvel’s Wolverine, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, Blood of the Dawnwalker, Silent Hill: Townfall, and more. Sliding to December 3 puts the game up against a different competitive landscape — one that’s less congested in its specific genre, with most of the year’s major releases already in players’ hands and attention turning to holiday purchases.
December 3 also positions it comfortably before Christmas, giving the game a full holiday shopping window before GTA 6 at November 19 dominates the conversation and before the typical end-of-year lists freeze the discourse. It’s a better position than mid-September for a game trying to establish itself as a genuine franchise revival.
Pre-Order Discount and Where to Buy
Both the Standard Edition and Commander Edition are now available to pre-order with a 10% discount applied. The Commander Edition’s early access advantage remains in place — November 30 instead of December 3 — making it the only way to get in ahead of the standard launch. Dawn of War 4 is a PC exclusive via Steam; no console versions have been announced.
