Echoes of Silenced Bells Quest Guide – The Blood of Dawnwalker

Echoes of Silenced Bells in The Blood of Dawnwalker explained — how to reach St. Tyna's Convent, handle the zombie nuns, get the Relic, beat Leonica, and make the right choice at the end.

Echoes of Silenced Bells in The Blood of Dawnwalker is one of the first major quests you get after leaving Laslea Glen. It takes you to St. Tyna’s Convent in the south of the map, where zombie nuns roam the grounds and Anca needs your help to reach the library. This guide walks you through every step — including the choice at the end that players keep asking about.

  • TL;DR
  • The quest starts right after the prologue — Anca asks Coen to meet her at the Crossroads Inn.
  • You need to clear a path through St. Tyna’s Convent so Anca can reach the library safely.
  • You can use the bell tower or the Relic of St. Tyna to deal with the soldiers blocking the way.
  • The library is packed with skill manuals — grab everything on the shelves.
  • The final boss is Leonica, a witch who summons clones. Dodge her explosions and orb attacks.
  • At the end, give the notes to Anca — do not throw them in the fire.

What Is the Echoes of Silenced Bells Quest?

Echoes of Silenced Bells is one of the few quests you receive the moment you step outside Laslea Glen and enter the open world. It is tied to your companion Anca, who is a medic and a former nun. She wants to visit St. Tyna’s Convent in the St. Tyna’s Grove region — a place she once called home — to search for books that could give Coen an edge against the vampire lord Brencis.

The problem is that the convent is no longer the peaceful place Anca remembers. Every nun inside has been transformed into a self-reviving zombie. Getting Anca to the library means figuring out how to navigate a courtyard full of undead without getting her killed. This quest also unlocks Anca’s romance questline, which is a big reason to tackle it early. You can read more about her story in our Anca romance guide for Blood of Dawnwalker.

How to Start Echoes of Silenced Bells

The quest appears in your journal automatically as soon as the prologue ends. As Coen is leaving Laslea Glen, Anca tells him to meet her at the Crossroads Inn — a building located further southeast, near the swamplands. It sits close to the St. Tyna’s Grove region and has its own shrine, though that shrine starts out damaged.

It is worth repairing the Crossroads Inn shrine by finding its heart before doing anything else here. You will be returning to this location multiple times, especially if you plan to continue Anca’s questline. Fast travel saves time, and time matters a lot in Blood of Dawnwalker. For a wider look at the game’s time mechanics and why every hour counts, see our Blood of Dawnwalker review.

Once you meet Anca at the inn, follow her southeast toward St. Tyna’s Convent. The mists will part as you approach, and a cutscene will play out. Things go sideways quickly — one of the sisters attacks, and it becomes clear that something has gone very wrong inside.

Reaching St. Tyna’s Convent

After the cutscene, Anca pulls Coen to safety and the two of them discuss a plan. You end up on a balcony overlooking the main courtyard. From here, Anca asks you to find a way to get her to the library safely. This is where the quest opens up and gives you choices about how to proceed.

Before you go anywhere, grab the Saint’s Tibia item from the corpse below the ladder on the west side of the area. It looks easy to miss, but it is used in a different quest later — specifically for crafting armor in the A Bulwark Against Darkness questline. If you skip it now, you will have to come back.

There are a dozen zombie nuns shuffling around the courtyard below. They will not notice you immediately, but if you get too close, they turn hostile and become very hard to shake off. Stealth and planning matter here.

You can also check the infirmary and bell tower for additional clues before committing to a path. These actions do not cost any time segments. However, investigating the chapel does cost 1 Time Segment. Keep that in mind if you are managing your in-game clock carefully. How to Clear a Path to the Library

There are two main ways to solve the courtyard problem. Both work. Your choice here depends on what you want to keep and how you want to handle the soldiers hiding inside the infirmary.

Option 1 – Give the Relic of St. Tyna to Brencis’ Soldiers

Go around to the back of the infirmary — the building directly in front of you with the smoking chimney. There is an opening you can speak through. A group of Brencis’ soldiers are trapped inside. They will offer you a key to the corridor that leads to the library if you retrieve the Relic of St. Tyna for them.

The relic has been moved from the main church to the sacristy — the small building on the west side of the courtyard with a little cross on the roof. To get inside, you need the Monastery Keys. These are hanging on a hook inside the wooden shed to the right of the sacristy, right up against the wall. Grab them, unlock the sacristy, check the dead nun’s neck, and take the relic.

The Relic of St. Tyna is actually an epic amulet. It buffs maximum human health, Witchcraft ability damage, Witchcraft ability health cost, and activation charge restoration. This is a strong accessory — if you want to keep it for yourself, use Option 2 below instead of handing it over to the soldiers. If you give it to them, you get the library key but lose the amulet.

Option 2 – Use the Bell Tower to Clear the Courtyard

This option lets you keep the Relic of St. Tyna and deal with the soldiers a different way. In the building next to and to the left of the sacristy, you can find a document called the Campana Loquitur on the floor. It explains the daily routine of the nuns and how it was signaled by the church bells. Even in their undead state, the zombie nuns still follow this routine.

The bell signals work like this:

  • Three tolls — the nuns go to the chapel.
  • Four tolls — the nuns go to the infirmary.
  • Five tolls — the nuns go to the dormitory.

Use the Monastery Keys to unlock the door below the bell tower in the east of the area, just to the right of the main church doors. Climb up and interact with the rope at the top.

The smart move is to first ring the infirmary signal (four tolls). This sends the zombie nuns straight to the infirmary, where they attack and kill the soldiers. Then ring the chapel signal (three tolls) to move the nuns away from the courtyard. This clears the path for you and Anca, lets you loot the soldiers’ bodies, and means you do not have to give up the relic. The dormitory signal (five tolls) also works as a safe clear if you want to avoid sending the nuns at the soldiers entirely.

Do not use only the infirmary signal without redirecting the nuns afterward. Some of the undead will stay inside the library, making the next part harder.

Getting to the Library

Once the courtyard is clear, go back to Anca and tell her the path is open. This costs 1 additional Time Segment. Follow Anca into the library together.

The library is full of skill manuals. Do not rush through it. Check every bookshelf. Manuals you can find here include:

  • Dirty Trick
  • Witchcraft Mastery
  • Precision
  • Master Fencer
  • Mercurial Fervour
  • Potent Blood
  • Frugal Witchcraft

As you go deeper into the catacombs below the library, you will find even more goodies including an additional Potent Blood Manual and the Razor Claw Vial recipe. Take your time and collect everything. These manuals are some of the most useful early-game upgrades you can get. For a breakdown of which skills to focus on first, see our guide on the best skills to level up in Blood of Dawnwalker.

The Leonica Boss Fight

At the bottom of the catacombs, you will face the final challenge of the quest — a boss fight against Leonica, She Who Speaks With the Devil. Leonica is Anca’s old friend from the convent. She is a Witch archetype, and the fight is more complex than most enemies you have faced up to this point.

How to Beat Leonica

As soon as the fight starts, rush Leonica and get in two or three seconds of attacks before she starts moving around. After that initial burst, you need to play defensively and react to her moves.

Watch for these attacks:

  • Frontal explosion (Thornvine Explosion) — She walks toward you, spreads her arms, and spikes burst out of her torso. Start strafing sideways the moment you see her charging it up.
  • Homing orb (Ravenous Flock) — She raises her hand, summons an orb, and launches it at you. The orb is slow but tracks you. Keep moving and dodge to the side when it gets close.
  • Clone summons — After each health bar is depleted, Leonica disappears and summons weaker clones of herself. These are standard nun enemies. Kill the clones quickly, but do not lose track of where Leonica reappears. Do not get cornered by the clones — they can pile on fast.

The pattern is consistent. Rush in early, dodge explosions, sidestep the orb, and clear clones between phases. After defeating Leonica, you receive:

  • Catacombs Key — lets you exit the dungeon.
  • Leonica’s Ring — an epic ring with passive activation charge restoration, Witchcraft ability health cost reduction, and Witchcraft ability damage.
  • Unholy Vitality Manual
  • Herbal Remedies Manual

Should You Burn the Notes or Give Them to Anca?

After Leonica is dead, Anca makes a painful discovery — her old friend was not a monster. Leonica was actually trying to cure the zombie nuns and had nearly succeeded before Coen and Anca interrupted her. Anca now wants to use Leonica’s notes to finish the ritual herself.

You will first get some dialogue options — “This won’t end well” or something more blunt — but these do not matter. The real choice comes immediately after, and it is a simple binary:

Throw the Notes in the Fire

Anca is very upset, but she recovers quickly. The zombie nuns remain cursed permanently. This choice has no major immediate consequence, but it does remove a possible later development in Anca’s questline.

Give the Notes to Anca

Anca performs the ritual and frees the nuns from their curse. She succeeds, but tells Coen that she had to make more unholy pacts to make it work. She is grateful for your trust. This choice will come up again in her later Stronger Than Achilles quest and may influence that decision point.

The better choice is to give the notes to Anca. She appreciates it, the nuns are freed, and it sets up her questline in a more positive direction. There is no penalty for trusting her here.

Either way, both choices still trigger the follow-up quest called Between the Words, and Anca behaves the same in both cases going forward. Neither choice blocks her romance path.

Between the Words – What Comes Next

After making your choice, head back to the Crossroads Inn. This kicks off a short follow-up quest called Between the Words. Here is what to do:

  • Prepare a warm drink for Anca — costs 1 Time Segment.
  • Browse the books and give her the one she finds interesting — then move the candle along the spine to reveal hidden writings. This also costs 1 Time Segment and ends the quest.

After this, Anca’s questline continues. She will give you a follow-up task related to the knowledge she gathered from the library. This quest chain also leads toward her romance path if that is something you are pursuing. Check out our full guide to romancing Anca for everything that follows.

Echoes of Silenced Bells – Key Tips

  • Grab Saint’s Tibia before anything else — it is by the corpse under the ladder on the west side. You need it for a different quest later and cannot easily come back for it.
  • Keep the Relic of St. Tyna if you can — it is a strong epic amulet. Use the bell tower method to avoid giving it away to the soldiers.
  • Loot every bookshelf in the library — the skill manuals here are some of the best early rewards in the game. Do not rush through.
  • During the Leonica fight, strafe her explosion and sidestep the orb — she follows a readable pattern. Once you know the tells, the fight becomes manageable.
  • Give the notes to Anca at the end — it is the more rewarding choice for her questline and does not hurt you in any way.
  • Repair the Crossroads Inn shrine early — you will be fast travelling here several times during Anca’s questline.

While you are exploring St. Tyna’s Grove and the surrounding areas, you may also encounter other hidden activities worth doing. The Wisp Treasure Hunt: Watermill Hills quest is a nearby hidden activity that rewards 100 XP and a skill point — well worth the detour as you move between regions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does Echoes of Silenced Bells start in The Blood of Dawnwalker?

The quest starts automatically at the end of the prologue. Anca tells Coen to meet her at the Crossroads Inn, which is southeast of Laslea Glen near the swamplands. Head there and talk to her to begin. The Crossroads Inn has its own damaged shrine — repair it early since you will return here often.

Should you give the Relic of St. Tyna to the soldiers or keep it?

The Relic of St. Tyna is a strong epic amulet that buffs Witchcraft damage, health, and activation charge restoration. If you want to keep it, use the bell tower instead of trading it to the soldiers. Ring the infirmary signal to send the zombie nuns at them, then ring the chapel signal to clear the courtyard afterward. This clears the way to the library without handing over the relic.

How do you beat Leonica in Echoes of Silenced Bells?

Rush in at the start of the fight for a quick burst of damage. Then play reactively — strafe away from her frontal explosion as she charges it, and sidestep when her homing orb gets close. After each health bar is depleted, she summons clones. Kill the clones fast so they do not corner you, then re-engage Leonica when she reappears. She follows a readable pattern once you know the three attacks.

Should you burn the notes or give them to Anca?

Give the notes to Anca. She performs the ritual, frees the zombie nuns, and is grateful for your trust. Burning the notes upsets her and leaves the nuns cursed permanently. Both choices let you continue her questline and romance, but giving her the notes is the more rewarding outcome and sets up her later Stronger Than Achilles quest in a better position.
