Xbox players, your Commonwealth just got a whole lot bigger. The Fallout 4 Misery Island mod has officially landed on Xbox Series X/S, and if you’ve been starving for new Fallout content while waiting on whatever Bethesda is cooking behind closed doors, this is exactly what the doctor ordered. It’s free, it’s massive, and it genuinely feels like a full DLC expansion — because honestly, it kind of is one.

Why Xbox Players Had to Wait This Long

Here’s the frustrating backstory. Misery Island actually dropped on PC way back in November 2025. Console players were completely locked out — not because the mod wasn’t ready, but because Bethesda’s Creations storage limit on consoles was an absolutely embarrassing 1–2GB. That cap had been sitting there since 2016 and hadn’t budged an inch. You can’t exactly fit a DLC-sized new worldspace into 2GB of space.

That changed on May 27, 2026, when Bethesda finally shipped the long-awaited Creations Storage Expansion update. Xbox Series X/S players went from 2GB all the way up to 100GB of mod storage — a 50x jump. Xbox One and PlayStation users got bumped to around 15GB, which is better than nothing but still nowhere near current-gen Xbox territory. And PS5 players? Still locked out of Misery Island entirely, thanks to Sony’s ongoing restrictions on external asset mods. This one’s an Xbox exclusive win, at least for now.

That storage update is the reason this mod exists on consoles at all. It also means a whole wave of bigger, more ambitious mods are now actually viable on Xbox — and Misery Island is just the first major one to take advantage. If you’re looking for more ways to stack up on free content right now, Prime Gaming’s free games for June 2026 are also worth checking out while you’re at it.

So What Exactly Is Misery Island?

Fallout: Misery Island — Isles of New England is the second chapter in an ongoing mod series built by Tenhats and shreddah4, two Nexus Mods creators who have been quietly constructing an entire chain of New England islands inside Fallout 4. The first chapter was Boon Island, a smaller atmospheric experience off the coast of Maine. Misery Island is the bigger, more ambitious follow-up, and the jump in scope is immediately obvious.

The mod is set on a brand-new map inspired by the real-world Misery Islands, a pair of small islands near Salem Sound in Massachusetts. In reality, they were a scenic resort destination before being converted to a nature reserve. In this mod, they’ve fallen into post-nuclear ruin — with a history “steeped in corruption, decay, and loneliness” according to the creators. That’s very on-brand for Fallout, and it works perfectly. The name itself comes from shipbuilder Robert Moulton, who spent three miserable days stranded there back in the 1620s. Even the lore behind the real location fits right into the Fallout universe without needing much of a stretch.

    Everything Packed Into This Mod

Let’s be clear about something — this is not a basic quest pack or a handful of new weapons slapped into the game. Misery Island is a full-blown expansion. Here’s what you’re actually getting when you download it:

    • A brand-new worldspace with 2 fully functional settlements to build and control, 20+ locations to discover, 8 interior cells, and plenty of hidden points of interest scattered across the map for explorers who like to dig deep
    • Custom weapons, armor, and clothing all designed with lore-friendly aesthetics — nothing looks out of place or thrown together
    • Returning mechanics from classic Fallout games — skill checks and weapon schematics make a comeback, which old-school fans are going to absolutely love
    • A brand-new radio station with a custom background music selection to keep the vibes going while you explore
    • A custom Pip-Boy map built specifically for the island
    • A unique transport system to get you out to the island — accessible by heading north of Boston Airport in the Commonwealth
    • Lore-friendly quests with optional side objectives, custom quest icon animations, and fully voice-acted NPCs
    • An expanded random encounter system mixing vanilla encounters with brand-new ones, plus new weather conditions to keep the moment-to-moment gameplay feeling unpredictable
    • Easter eggs and real-world references tied to the actual history of the Misery Islands, woven naturally into environmental storytelling, holotapes, notes, and terminal entries

The mod creators recommend being at least level 25 before you make the trip. The island doesn’t pull punches, and rolling up underprepared will get you wrecked fast. You access the island through a unique transport method found north of Boston Airport — keep your eyes open when you’re in that area of the map.

One Requirement You Need to Know About

Before you go rushing to the Creations menu, there’s one thing to check first. Fallout 4: Far Harbor DLC is required to run Misery Island on Xbox. If you don’t already own it, grab it — Far Harbor is legitimately one of the best pieces of Fallout 4 content Bethesda ever made anyway, so it’s not exactly a painful requirement. But without it, Misery Island simply won’t run on the Xbox version of the game.

It’s also worth knowing that the mod has extremely high compatibility with other mods in your load order. Misery Island doesn’t touch any vanilla game records or cells within the Commonwealth or Far Harbor worldspaces, which means the chances of it conflicting with your existing mod setup are very low. The main exception would be if another mod places objects in the exact same spot as the transport to the island — but that’s a pretty specific edge case most players won’t run into.

This Is What Fallout Looks Like While We Wait for Fallout 5

Nobody has a clue when Fallout 5 is actually dropping. Bethesda is still deep in development on other projects, and recent leaks suggest a Fallout 3 remake is potentially on the horizon for 2027 — but even that’s not confirmed. The gap between now and the next proper Fallout game could easily be another decade. That’s a long time to just replay the same Commonwealth over and over.

This is exactly why mods like Misery Island matter so much right now. The community is filling in the gaps that Bethesda isn’t, and they’re doing it at a quality level that’s genuinely impressive. Two full settlements, 20+ locations, voice acting, custom quests, skill checks, new weapons — all of that built by two modders in their spare time, released for free. That’s wild when you think about it.

And now that Xbox Series X/S is sitting on 100GB of mod storage, this is just the beginning. More large-scale mods are going to follow. The console modding scene for Fallout 4 is about to get a serious glow-up, and Misery Island is the proof of concept that it works. Speaking of things that are actually worth your time this week, Toy Story 3 Complete Edition was just announced and the PlayStation Store has also been doing some housekeeping — a wave of shovelware titles just got delisted if you want to catch up on that story too.

How to Get Misery Island on Xbox Right Now

Getting the mod is straightforward. Head to the Creations menu inside Fallout 4 on your Xbox Series X/S, search for Misery Island — Isles of New England, and download it. It’s completely free. Make sure you have Far Harbor installed before you boot it up, get your character to at least level 25, and then make your way north of Boston Airport in the Commonwealth to find your ride out to the island.

If you haven’t jumped back into Fallout 4 in a while, this is honestly one of the better reasons to do it. The storage expansion update alone opens up a ton of modding possibilities that simply weren’t available on console before, and Misery Island is the headline act. Don’t sleep on it — and while you’re in the gaming mood, Overwatch’s Anniversary Event just dropped some interesting title changes worth knowing about too.
