It solves the single biggest problem with the extraction loop — the dangerous journey across the Shattered Coast to a fixed Extraction Site terminal that every nearby player can see and push. With a Portable Extractor, you bank your Sprite on the spot, silently, from wherever you are standing. What Is the Portable Extractor in Fortnite Runners

The Portable Extractor is an Extraction Gizmo — a new category of consumable utility item introduced in Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 3. It is not a weapon, not a healing item, and not a mobility tool. It lives in a dedicated slot tied to your Pickaxe.

When activated while carrying an equipped Sprite, the Portable Extractor runs a 5-second extraction channel and then permanently banks that Sprite to your collection — exactly like completing an Extraction Site extraction, but without needing to travel to a terminal or defend a countdown timer in a publicly known location.

There are three Extraction Gizmos in Chapter 7 Season 3 in total. Only the Portable Extractor is live at launch. The other two — the Lucky Locator and the Extraction Site Booster — are confirmed for later in the season. More on those below.

How to Use the Portable Extractor: Step by Step

The game does not explain the controls well, especially for controller players. Here is the exact process on every platform:

Step 1: Find and Equip a Sprite

Pick up a Sprite from a Sprite Chest, standard chest, floor loot, or eliminated enemy. The Sprite automatically equips to your Sprite slot when you pick it up. You do not need to do anything manually to equip it — carrying it is enough for the Portable Extractor to recognise it.

Step 2: Find Cover Before Activating

This step is the one most players skip — and it is the most important one. Taking any damage during the 5-second extraction channel cancels it immediately. The Sprite stays in your inventory but the Gizmo is consumed. You lose the Portable Extractor without banking anything.

Before activating:

• Move inside a building, around a corner, or behind solid cover
• Check your surroundings for enemy players — the extraction does not alert others the way Extraction Sites do, but you are stationary and vulnerable for 5 seconds
• Top up your shields if possible — even a stray shot from outside can interrupt the channel

Step 3: Switch to the Portable Extractor in Your Pickaxe Slot

The Portable Extractor lives in the same slot as your Pickaxe. You cannot see it in your main weapon inventory. To access it:

• Controller (PlayStation): Hold Triangle
• Controller (Xbox): Hold Y
• PC keyboard: Press L

If you have a Gizmo active in your inventory, this input switches from your Pickaxe to the Portable Extractor. The visual changes to show the Extractor item in hand.

Step 4: Activate and Hold for 5 Seconds

With the Portable Extractor equipped, press and hold the interact / use button to start the extraction. A progress indicator appears on screen. Hold completely still for the full 5-second duration.

• Do not move. Moving cancels the extraction on some platforms — stay stationary.
• Do not take damage. Any hit cancels the channel and consumes the Gizmo.
• Do not switch weapons mid-channel — this will cancel the process.

Step 5: Extraction Completes

When the 5-second timer finishes, the Sprite is instantly banked to your permanent collection. You receive your Sprite Dust payout immediately. The Portable Extractor is consumed — it is a single-use item.

You will see a confirmation notification on screen when the extraction registers. The Sprite now appears in your Sprite Collection in the pre-match lobby and can be summoned in future matches using Sprite Dust.

What Happens If You Get Eliminated During Extraction

There are two scenarios and the outcome is different for each.

Eliminated before you activate the Portable Extractor: The Sprite you were carrying drops on the ground at your location. Any player can pick it up. The Portable Extractor stays in your Gizmo inventory — you do not lose it on death.

Eliminated during the 5-second extraction channel: The extraction cancels. The Sprite drops on the ground. The Portable Extractor is consumed — you lose the Gizmo even though the extraction did not complete. This is the most painful outcome and why finding cover before activating is mandatory.

The Portable Extractor itself is never lost on death outside of the active channel. Your full Gizmo inventory persists after being eliminated and carries into your next match.

How to Get More Portable Extractors in Fortnite

Portable Extractors do not drop from chests or floor loot. You cannot find them during a match the way you find weapons or healing items. Every Portable Extractor you own comes from one of these sources:

Sprite Mastery Track

The primary long-term source. Progress through the Sprite Mastery track by extracting Sprites at Max Level 5. At Mastery Level 2 (extracting your second Max Level Sprite) you receive 4 Portable Extractors. At Mastery Level 6 (extracting your sixth Max Level Sprite) you receive another 4 Portable Extractors. Additional Gizmo rewards continue as you progress further up the Mastery track.

This is the most Extractors you will earn in a single source — but it requires significant Sprite levelling investment to reach.

Sprite Dust Services at Extraction Sites

Visit any Extraction Site terminal during a match and select the Sprite Dust Services option. You can purchase 1 Portable Extractor per day for 2,000 Sprite Dust. This resets daily at 9 AM ET.

If you are extracting Sprites consistently and building a Sprite Dust reserve, this is the most reliable ongoing supply. Two thousand Sprite Dust is manageable if you are running regular matches — each extraction generates Dust even for Sprites you already own.

Daily Quest Bonus

Completing four daily quests in a single day rewards a Portable Extractor as a bonus on top of the usual XP payout. This is a passive source that rewards consistent daily play. Check your quest log each day — the fourth quest in a day triggers the bonus automatically.

Specific Quests and Bonus Goals

Certain seasonal quests and Bonus Goals quests list a Portable Extractor as a direct reward. These are not repeatable but provide early-season Gizmos before you have built up Sprite Mastery progress. Check your Quests tab regularly — any quest showing an Extractor icon is worth prioritising if you are actively farming Sprites.

Portable Extractor vs Standard Extraction Site: When to Use Which

Both methods bank your Sprite permanently. The question is when each is the better choice.

Use the Portable Extractor when:

• You just found a rare or Mythic Sprite — Zero Point, Burnt Peanut, Legendary, or a Gold/Gummy variant. Never risk these on a contested public terminal.
• The nearest Extraction Site is far away or inside a dangerous storm path
• You are low on health or shields and cannot safely defend an Extraction Site countdown
• You are playing solo with no squadmates to cover the terminal perimeter
• The storm is closing and no Extraction Site is in the safe zone
• You are carrying a Sprite at Level 3 or higher and do not want to risk Mastery progress reset

Use a standard Extraction Site when:

• You are carrying a common Sprite (Earth, Water, Fire) with low Mastery investment — not worth spending a limited Gizmo
• You have squadmates to defend the countdown and can safely use the terminal
• The Extraction Site is near the storm edge with low traffic
• You want to save your Portable Extractors for higher-value situations later in the session
• You need to access the Sprite Dust Services at the terminal to buy more Gizmos

The core rule: the rarer the Sprite, the more a Portable Extractor is worth using. Common Sprites are easy to find again. A Zero Point Sprite is not.

Portable Extractor Rules: What You Need to Know

• Single use. Each Portable Extractor is consumed once activated — whether the extraction succeeds or is interrupted by damage.
• Stackable. You can hold multiple Portable Extractors at once. There is no cap on how many you can own.
• Non-tradable. You cannot drop Portable Extractors for squadmates or trade them to other players. They are account-locked.
• Persists across matches. Your full Gizmo inventory carries over between every match all season long.
• Cannot be lost on death. Being eliminated outside of an active extraction does not remove Gizmos from your inventory.
• Expires at season end. All unused Portable Extractors disappear when Chapter 7 Season 3 ends on August 19, 2026. Do not hoard them — use them actively throughout the season.

All Three Extraction Gizmos in Chapter 7 Season 3

The Portable Extractor is only one of three Extraction Gizmos confirmed for Season 3. The other two are not live yet but are coming later in the season:

Lucky Locator (Coming Later This Season)

The Lucky Locator tracks down a buried chest that is guaranteed to contain a Sprite you have not yet collected. It is essentially a targeted Sprite-finding tool that removes the RNG from finding new Sprites for your collection. This will be particularly valuable for players trying to complete their full Sprite collection — especially for rare and hard-to-find Sprites like the Zero Point or Burnt Peanut.

Epic has not confirmed a specific release date for the Lucky Locator. Watch for patch notes as the season progresses.

Extraction Site Booster (Coming Later This Season)

The Extraction Site Booster creates a special extraction zone that supercharges any Sprite banked within it. Using one at an Extraction Site gives you bonus Sprite Dust or additional rewards on top of the normal extraction payout. It stacks with other bonuses — including Gummy Sprite extraction bonuses — making it a strong option for players grinding the Sprite Mastery track efficiently.

The Extraction Site Booster also creates a high-risk, high-reward situation. Other players will see the supercharged site and may push it. Using one is a deliberate choice to contest territory for better rewards.

Both Gizmos will start in the Pickaxe slot when they are added, matching how the Portable Extractor works currently.

Portable Extractor Tips for Sprite Farming

• Save Extractors for Sprite Chest runs, not casual matches. If you are running a dedicated loot path looking for rare Sprites, bring your Extractors into that session — not everyday survival matches where you are unlikely to find a rare.
• Buy one from Sprite Dust Services every day. At 2,000 Sprite Dust per day, this adds up over the season. Make it a habit every time you visit an Extraction Site terminal.
• Use the fourth daily quest reward as your indicator. If you have completed four daily quests today and received your bonus Extractor, you are maintaining a healthy Gizmo supply.
• Do not use them on Rare Sprites in the first circle. Early in a match, the risk of dying is highest and the stakes are low. Save Extractors for mid-to-late match situations when your loadout is strong.
• Never activate in the open. Find a wall, a building interior, or a rock to break line of sight before starting the 5-second channel. Five seconds is long enough for an enemy to close the distance and interrupt.
