Genshin Impact 5.5: All the Muted Characters & Why They’ve Gone Quiet
So, Genshin Impact 5.5 is finally here, and yeah, there’s plenty of new stuff to check out. But if you’ve hopped in lately and noticed a ton of characters aren’t saying anything anymore—you’re definitely not alone. And no, it’s not a bug or your audio settings. A huge chunk of the cast is actually muted this update.
This kinda thing’s been happening a lot lately, not just in Genshin but in other HoYoverse games like Honkai: Star Rail too. And now, in Version 5.5, it’s worse than ever—more than half the characters are silent. As much as we love hearing Xiangling talk about her spicy food obsession, we seriously miss hearing the rest of the squad.

🤔 So… Why Is Everyone Muted?
HoYoverse gave an official reason: “recording arrangements.” But let’s be real—that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Most fans think this all ties back to the SAG-AFTRA strike going on right now.
The strike is about voice actors fighting for fair pay and protection from AI taking over their jobs (yeah, it’s a thing). And since Formosa Interactive, the studio that usually handles Genshin’s English voiceovers, is part of that strike, a bunch of the cast can’t legally record lines for them right now.
To deal with that, HoYo’s been shifting work to other studios like Sound Cadence, which also explains why some characters, like Kinich, have been recast.
