God of War Laufey Confirmed for Physical Disc and 2027 Release

    By Lilly Daniels · July 11, 2026 · 5 min read
    God of War Laufey

Amid one of the stormiest weeks PlayStation has had in years, Santa Monica Studio just dropped a single sentence that said more than most press releases ever could. God of War Laufey will be available on disc, and in doing so, the studio has essentially confirmed the game’s release window without ever actually stating a date.

    • What was confirmed: God of War Laufey will have a physical disc release on PS5
    • What it implies: The game must launch before Sony’s January 2028 physical disc cutoff, all but confirming a 2027 release
    • Expected window: Early 2027, around February or March, per Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier
    • SDCC panel date: July 24, 2026, at 5:30 PM PT / 8:30 PM ET
    • Official release date: Still not announced, but Gamescom 2026 is the next likely moment for news

Why Santa Monica’s Disc Confirmation Is Bigger Than It Sounds

In any other year, a developer confirming their game would be available on disc wouldn’t even qualify as news. In July 2026, following PlayStation’s announcement that all new games released from January 2028 onwards would be digital-only, it’s become one of the most meaningful things a studio can say. The comments section of Santa Monica’s original SDCC panel announcement post on X filled almost immediately with fans demanding to know whether Laufey would get a physical release, and the studio didn’t let it sit for long. Just an hour after the panel announcement, the official God of War Laufey account added the confirmation that the game would be available on disc.

That one sentence does two things at once. It reassures physical collectors that God of War Laufey will be a game they can hold, lend, and resell. And it quietly but definitively tells us the game has to launch before January 2028, because any new title releasing after that cutoff won’t get a disc at all. Given that early 2027 has been the most consistently rumored window, none of this is a shock, but it’s the first time anything official has even indirectly pointed to a timeline.

What This Means for the Release Date

Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier has previously reported that God of War Laufey is targeting a launch around February or March 2027, and this physical disc confirmation lines up exactly with that window. A late 2026 release was already looking extremely unlikely given the game was only revealed a few months ago. A holiday 2027 launch is possible but would be cutting it close to the disc cutoff with less buffer than Santa Monica would probably want. That leaves early-to-mid 2027 as the most logical target, giving the game breathing room from GTA 6’s launch window while still comfortably clearing the January 2028 physical deadline.

It’s also worth noting how much content Santa Monica had ready to show when the game was first revealed. The amount of footage and character detail on display at the State of Play reveal was unusually substantial for a game this far out, which has consistently suggested Laufey is closer to finished than most early reveals tend to be.

God of War Laufey SDCC Panel: What to Expect on July 24

The SDCC panel itself takes place on July 24 at 5:30 PM PT / 8:30 PM ET. The lineup of panelists is stacked:

    • Cory Barlog – Head of Creative, moderating the panel
    • Ariel Lawrence – Game Director
    • Deborah Ann Woll – Voice of Faye (Laufey)
    • Christopher Judge – Voice of Kratos
    • Jack Quaid – Voice of Phranque the Cube
    • Perlina Lau – Voice of Rue

The described scope of the panel is behind-the-scenes stories, performance capture insights, and character discussion, not hard news. Comic-Con panels historically don’t tend to be the venue for release date announcements or new trailers, so players should calibrate expectations accordingly. It will almost certainly be a great watch if you’re already excited about Laufey, but don’t go in expecting a release date reveal. Gamescom in August or a dedicated PlayStation State of Play later in the year feels more likely as the moment Sony formally dates the game.

The Bittersweet Reality for Physical Collectors

There’s an unavoidable emotional weight to this confirmation that fans have been quick to point out. God of War Laufey is in all likelihood going to be one of the very last major first-party PlayStation games ever to get a physical disc release. Whatever Santa Monica ships after this, whether that’s the God of War Trilogy Remake or future projects, will almost certainly exist only as a digital license under Sony’s current roadmap. For fans who’ve built a physical God of War collection across the Greek and Norse sagas, Laufey is probably the final chapter that can actually sit on a shelf.

That context has made the disc confirmation land differently for a lot of people. Comments across social media have been unusually positive for any PlayStation-adjacent post this week, with collectors expressing genuine relief that they’ll be able to own this one the old-fashioned way, even as the era it represents is coming to a close.

What’s Coming Up on the Release Calendar

While God of War Laufey shapes up for 2027, here’s a quick look at what’s releasing in the months ahead:
