Gran Turismo 7 August 2026 Update — Four New Cars Teased Including JZX100 Toyotas, Hyundai IONIQ 6 N, and Caterham

Gran Turismo 7 August 2026 Update

Gran Turismo 7 is getting its first content drop in over two months, and Kazunori Yamauchi’s teaser suggests this one is worth the wait. On August 9, 2026, the series creator posted on X with his signature silhouette image — four vehicles hidden in black outlines — and a line that immediately set the community buzzing: “今回は、少しマニアックな車が入っていますね” (“This time, there are some niche cars included”). The update arrives next week, with community consensus pointing toward Update 1.71 landing around August 20 — timed alongside the second round of the 2026 Gran Turismo World Series hosted in Tokyo.

None of the four cars have been formally named by Polyphony Digital yet, but specialist racing game publications and the GT community have been remarkably precise in their identifications. The outlines have been identified by Traxion as the Hyundai IONIQ 6 N, Caterham Seven Superlight R500, Toyota Chaser Tourer V, and Toyota Mark II Tourer V. If that lineup holds, Gran Turismo 7 would reach a significant milestone: 150 cars added post-launch, which is a remarkable number for a game that launched in 2022 and has delivered every single update for free.

Toyota Chaser Tourer V and Mark II Tourer V — The JDM Icons

The two Toyotas are the headliners that have the drifting community most excited. The Chaser Tourer V and Mark II Tourer V both belong to Toyota’s X100 generation — closely related mechanically, sharing a platform but wearing distinct bodywork and badging. Both used Toyota’s turbocharged 2.5-litre 1JZ-GTE inline-six engine in their JZX100 versions, which is one of the most celebrated powerplants in Japanese car culture — known for its tunability, its torque delivery, and the fact that it sits in a rear-wheel-drive chassis that rewards skilled drivers and punishes careless ones.

The cultural footprint of these cars is enormous, particularly in drifting. A 1998 JZX100 Chaser appeared in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, cementing its status with a generation of fans. Both the Chaser and Mark II are mainstays of Japanese drifting competitions and touge runs, and their presence in gaming — from early Gran Turismo titles through various Need for Speed games — reflects how deeply embedded they are in car culture broadly. The Chaser Tourer V ’96 and the earlier-generation Mark II Tourer V ’92 both appeared in the original Gran Turismo and Gran Turismo 2, making their potential return in GT7 a piece of series history coming home.

In practical gameplay terms, both cars slot naturally into the game’s Gr.3 and Gr.4 tuned car categories, and the 1JZ engine is likely to be one of the most-requested engine swap options for other compatible platforms in the garage once the cars are live. Whether Polyphony includes an engine swap option for the 1JZ at launch or later is something the community is already discussing.

    Hyundai IONIQ 6 N — The High-Performance EV

The IONIQ 6 N would be the third model added since Hyundai N and Polyphony Digital announced their collaboration in 2024, following the IONIQ 5 N and Elantra N TC. Globally unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July 2025, the IONIQ 6 N builds on the 5 N’s dual-motor powertrain, retaining its 601hp standard and 641hp boost outputs — available for ten-second bursts via the “N Grin Boost” function. The result is 0–62mph in 3.2 seconds using N Launch Control and a 160mph top speed.

On paper the IONIQ 6 N is one of the fastest-accelerating cars expected in this update, which makes its placement on the same update as stripped-back lightweight machinery genuinely amusing. The contrast between a 640hp twin-motor EV sports sedan and a Caterham with no doors, no roof, and a sub-500kg kerb weight is exactly the kind of eclectic mix that Gran Turismo has always done well. The IONIQ 6 N shares the same architecture as the 5 N, and includes faux gearshifts in the real world — though these weren’t replicated in GT7 for the IONIQ 5 N. Whether Polyphony implements them this time is an interesting question for simulation enthusiasts.

The Hyundai partnership with Gran Turismo has been one of the more active manufacturer relationships in the game’s post-launch content strategy, and the IONIQ 6 N’s arrival continues a deliberate push to represent modern high-performance EVs alongside the game’s extensive historic and racing car catalogue.

Caterham Seven Superlight R500 — The Purist’s Pick

The Caterham Seven Superlight R500 would mark the British brand’s return to the series for the first time since Gran Turismo 6, with Caterham’s only previous GT representative being the motorcycle-engined Seven Fireblade, which debuted in Gran Turismo 4 and returned in GT5 and GT6.

The R500 is not the Fireblade. Where the Fireblade used a Honda CBR1000RR motorcycle engine, the Superlight R500 is powered by a Ford-derived Cosworth Duratec 2.0-litre unit in a highly tuned state of tune — producing around 263hp in a car that weighs somewhere between 460 and 500kg depending on specification. The power-to-weight ratio that results puts it in genuinely supercar territory for acceleration despite the car being, essentially, a frame with wheels and a seat bolted to it.

With the addition of the Caterham Seven Superlight R500, Gran Turismo 7 would complete its collection of major track-day specials — joining the BAC Mono, KTM X-Bow R, and Radical SR3 SL. That’s a remarkable roster of stripped lightweight machines for players who want the most raw, unfiltered driving experience the game can offer. The R500 in particular has a reputation for demanding real commitment from the driver — there’s no electronics safety net, no traction control you can lean on, no body panels to hide behind when the back steps out. In Gran Turismo, that translates to one of the most skill-testing cars to drive quickly.

When Is the Update Coming and What Else Might It Include?

Yamauchi confirmed the update arrives “next week” from his August 9 post. Community speculation based on a reported leak from the GTWS Round 2 event recording points toward August 20 as the specific release date, though Polyphony Digital has not confirmed this officially. The timing aligns with the Tokyo leg of the 2026 Gran Turismo World Series, giving Polyphony a natural marketing moment to pair fresh content with a major competitive event.

As for what else accompanies the four cars: Polyphony typically holds back the full patch notes until very close to release, but past updates suggest additional World Circuits races, possible Café Extra Menu content, and potentially engine swap options for the new arrivals. The community is also watching to see whether a Xiaomi Vision Gran Turismo concept — revealed back in March 2026 but not yet added to the game — might slip into this update or be held for a later drop. GTPlanet’s forum thread on the subject has been speculating about the Xiaomi VGT’s absence for months with no resolution yet.

What’s clear is that the “niche” framing Yamauchi used in his teaser is well-earned. Two forgotten 1990s Japanese sports sedans, a high-performance Korean EV, and a British track weapon with no creature comforts whatsoever is genuinely one of the more eclectic four-car updates GT7 has put together — and that’s part of what makes Gran Turismo’s long-running post-launch support so compelling. There’s something here for the JDM enthusiast, the EV performance crowd, and the purist who just wants the lightest, most mechanical car possible.
