Grid Legends Online Servers Shutting Down September 11 — What You’ll Lose and What Stays

Racing game fans have less than a week left to get their online Grid Legends sessions in. EA has confirmed that the game’s online servers are going dark on September 11, 2026 — just four years after the Codemasters-developed racer launched in 2022. If you’ve been meaning to finish off some multiplayer achievements, climb the leaderboards one last time, or just run a few more Dynamic Events with friends, your window is closing fast. Here’s everything that’s shutting down, what survives, and what this means for the broader Grid franchise going forward.

What Is Actually Shutting Down on September 11?

EA’s official notice, published on the PlayStation Store and its own service updates page, is specific about what disappears when the servers go dark. The shutdown affects the PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S versions of Grid Legends. As of September 11, the following features will no longer be available on those platforms:

    • Cross-platform play
    • Online multiplayer modes
    • Quick Race (online)
    • Dynamic Events
    • Leaderboards
    • Any other feature requiring an online connection

That’s a significant chunk of what made Grid Legends worth playing for its most dedicated community. Grid Legends leaned heavily into its multiplayer component at launch, and losing all of that in a single sweep leaves a considerably thinner game behind.

    What Survives the Shutdown?

The silver lining — and it’s a meaningful one — is that Grid Legends is not going completely dark. The game’s single-player campaign will remain fully playable after September 11. Grid Legends has one of the more unusual story modes in a racing game, featuring live-action cutscenes blended with racing gameplay, and that entire experience will still be accessible offline.

There’s also a platform-specific exception worth knowing about. The Nintendo Switch 2 version of Grid Legends, released earlier in 2026, will remain online for the foreseeable future. Mobile and VR versions are also expected to remain playable beyond the September 11 date. So the game isn’t dead everywhere — just effectively gutted on the platforms where most people own it.

EA has not confirmed a delisting date for Grid Legends on any storefront. The game is not currently on sale, and if you want a copy in your library before a potential future delisting, now would be the time to pick one up. Given that it’s losing the majority of its online features, a storefront removal at some point down the line is a reasonable expectation, even if EA hasn’t announced one.

Trophy and Achievement Hunters: Pay Attention

If you have any online-linked trophies or achievements you’ve been planning to get around to, September 11 is a hard deadline. Leaderboard placements, Dynamic Events completions, and any multiplayer-associated progress all disappear when the servers go down. There is no announced path to continue earning those post-shutdown. If they’re on your list, the next five days are your window.

This Is the End of the Grid Franchise’s Online Presence on Console

The broader context here is grimmer than just one game going offline. Grid Legends was the last entry in the franchise still running online on PlayStation and Xbox. EA shut down three other Grid games at the end of 2025: Grid 2, Grid Autosport, and Grid (2019) all had their servers closed in quick succession. At the time, that felt manageable because Grid Legends was still running. Now, Grid Legends is joining them.

The result is that after September 11, there will be no Grid game with active online servers on PlayStation or Xbox. The only way to play Grid multiplayer on console will be through the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Grid Legends. The franchise has effectively been taken offline on the platforms where it had the most players.

No new Grid game has been announced at the time of writing. Codemasters’ most recent release was F1 25, which dropped in 2025, and EA’s racing focus has clearly shifted toward that franchise over Grid. Whether a new Grid game is in development that might be prompting this cleanup of older entries — as one interpretation of the pattern would suggest — remains unconfirmed. It’s possible. It’s also possible EA is simply winding down a franchise that never quite found the audience it needed.

EA’s Pattern of Shutdowns in 2026

Grid Legends is far from an isolated case. EA has been consistently shutting down games throughout 2026 at a rate of roughly one or more per month. A look at what’s already closed this year shows just how steady that cadence has been:

    • Battlefield Hardline (console versions) — June 22, 2026
    • Plants vs. Zombies HD (Apple devices) — June 24, 2026
    • Madden NFL 23 — July 13, 2026
    • Apex Legends (Nintendo Switch) — August 4, 2026
    • NHL titles (two entries) — end of August 2026
    • Grid Legends (PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox) — September 11, 2026

Looking ahead, NBA Mobile 26 is confirmed to shut down on October 27, 2026. Nothing beyond that has been officially announced at the time of writing, but EA’s pattern makes further announcements before the year is out a near-certainty. The publisher keeps a running list of shutdowns on its online services page, and that list gets updated regularly.

The four-year lifespan for Grid Legends is on the shorter end of EA shutdowns, though not unprecedented. The studio has been closing games under five years old with increasing frequency, and Grid Legends joins that growing list of titles where players who bought in at full price are now looking at a significantly reduced product. No compensation or upgrade path has been announced for Grid Legends owners on the affected platforms.

Is There Any Way to Keep Playing Grid Legends Online?

For those genuinely attached to Grid Legends’ multiplayer, the realistic options after September 11 are limited. The Nintendo Switch 2 version remains online, so that’s one avenue if you happen to have the hardware. Beyond that, the PC version’s shutdown means there’s no easy workaround through dedicated servers or community-run alternatives — at least not officially supported ones.

The broader racing game landscape still has plenty to offer. The F1 series from Codemasters remains active, Gran Turismo 7 continues to receive updates, and Forza Motorsport has been building its post-launch content for a couple of years now. But Grid Legends filled a specific niche — accessible, diverse vehicle roster, arcade-adjacent handling — that those titles don’t fully replicate.

The Bigger Problem Nobody Wants to Talk About

There’s a wider issue sitting underneath the Grid Legends shutdown that deserves naming directly. When you buy a game with substantial online components, you are not guaranteed those components for any particular duration. EA’s terms of service, like most publishers’, reserve the right to shut down online services at any time. Grid Legends owners who paid full price in 2022 are now four years later looking at a game that’s lost most of what they bought it for, with no refund or compensation offered.

This connects to the broader conversation happening in gaming right now about digital ownership, preservation, and what players actually get when they spend money on a game. The Stop Killing Games movement — which has been pushing for legislation requiring publishers to leave games in a playable state after servers close — exists precisely because of patterns like this one. Grid Legends at least leaves single-player intact, which is better than a fully online-only title going dark. But for players who bought it primarily for multiplayer, that’s cold comfort.

These are questions that the gaming industry is actively wrestling with across multiple fronts right now. If you’re interested in the broader digital ownership debate that EA’s shutdown pattern feeds into, the ongoing conversations around what players expect from the games they invest in and publisher accountability are worth following closely.

Last Chance: What to Do Before September 11

You have five days. If Grid Legends is in your library and you care about any of the following, now is the time:

    • Complete any online-linked trophies or achievements before the deadline
    • Get your final leaderboard placements logged
    • Finish any open Dynamic Events
    • Run any multiplayer races you’ve been putting off

After September 11, Grid Legends becomes a single-player game. That single-player is genuinely worth experiencing if you haven’t — the live-action story mode is a quirky, entertaining piece of racing game history and it’s not going anywhere. But the online component that defined the experience for many players will be gone, and it’s not coming back.
