Grounded 2 Coming to PS5 on August 11 With the Into the Abyss Update — Everything You Need to Know

PS5 players, your wait is officially over. Obsidian Entertainment has confirmed that Grounded 2 is making its PlayStation 5 debut on August 11, 2026, and the timing couldn’t be better. The PS5 launch lands on the same day as the game’s biggest content update yet — Into the Abyss — meaning new players aren’t just getting a survival game, they’re getting a survival game that just opened up an entirely new region to explore.

For Xbox and PC players already deep into Brookhollow Park, August 11 is equally exciting. The pond is finally opening, and what’s waiting inside it is shaping up to be one of Grounded 2’s most ambitious updates since Early Access began in July 2025.

    What Is Grounded 2?

For anyone jumping in fresh on PS5, here’s the setup. Grounded 2 is developed by Obsidian Entertainment in collaboration with Eidos-Montréal and published by Xbox Game Studios. It’s the sequel to the original Grounded, built around the same concept — you’re a tiny teenager shrunk to the size of an insect, surviving in an enormous world by gathering resources, crafting weapons and gear, building bases, and fighting oversized bugs that want you dead.

The sequel steps out of the original backyard and into Brookhollow Park, a 1990s-themed suburban playground that’s roughly three times the size of the first game’s map. It launched on Xbox Series X|S and Steam Early Access on July 29, 2025, hitting nearly 50,000 concurrent players on Steam on day one before becoming one of the most positively reviewed survival games in the genre. PS5 was always part of the plan — and August 11 is when that finally becomes reality.

Obsidian’s Chris Parker, game director on Grounded 2, put it plainly: launching on PS5 is effectively a second launch for the project, and they didn’t want that moment to arrive without something significant to offer the platform.

Grounded 2’s Into the Abyss Update — Full Breakdown

Into the Abyss is Grounded 2’s update 0.5, and it’s the largest content drop the game has seen since Early Access began. The entire update is built around one thing: the pond. That body of water sitting in Brookhollow Park that you’ve been staring at? It’s now a fully explorable biome with sub-regions above and below the surface, new creatures, new gear, and a brand-new way to get around.

New Areas — The Mountains, The Bayou, and The Depths

The pond isn’t just one big empty lake. Into the Abyss splits the area into three distinct zones, each with its own environment and challenges. The Mountains and the Bayou are above-water areas ringing the pond, each with their own biome identity and secrets to find. Then there’s the underwater zone itself — the depths beneath the surface, which go darker and more dangerous the further down you push.

Obsidian has kept the specifics of what’s hiding in the deepest sections deliberately vague, which is the right call. The mystery is half the reason you’ll want to dive in on day one. What they have confirmed is that the pond region is the biggest single area added to Grounded 2 so far — bigger than any previous update — and that exploration is the core pull, whether you’re going in solo or with friends in co-op.

Diving Suits and Underwater Exploration Overhaul

Getting into the water isn’t just a matter of jumping in. Into the Abyss introduces craftable diving suits that let players stay submerged for longer and reach sections of the pond that would otherwise be off-limits. The deeper you want to go, the better the gear you’ll need — which ties directly into the new progression paths the update introduces.

Obsidian has said the underwater gameplay in Into the Abyss builds directly on what the team learned from the original Grounded’s pond content. The first game had solid underwater sections, and those lessons have fed into a more fully realized aquatic experience this time around, with new swimming mechanics, dedicated crafting options for aquatic gear, and combat that accounts for the change in movement underwater.

Returning Creatures — Koi Fish and Diving Bell Spider

Fans of the original Grounded will recognize a couple of the threats waiting in the water. The koi fish and the diving bell spider are both making their return in Into the Abyss, this time scaled to Grounded 2’s larger, more dangerous world. These aren’t pushovers — the koi fish in particular was one of the more intimidating encounters in the first game, and having both creatures back as high-level obstacles in the new pond biome means the underwater areas won’t be a casual stroll.

Beyond the returning creatures, Obsidian has confirmed brand-new threats are lurking in the deeper sections of the pond that haven’t been revealed yet. Expect surprises on August 11.

The Toe-Biter Buggy — Land and Water Travel

One of the most hyped additions in Into the Abyss is the Toe-biter, a new amphibious Buggy that can travel seamlessly across both land and water. Grounded 2 already introduced rideable Buggies as one of its major features over the original, and the Toe-biter takes that concept further by eliminating the barrier between land exploration and pond exploration.

In practical terms, this means faster travel around the new pond biome, easier access to hidden areas along the water’s edge, and another option for making a quick escape when something significantly larger than you decides you look like lunch. The Toe-biter also opens up exploration routes that wouldn’t be viable on foot, which is a big deal in a region as sprawling as the pond area.

How Is Grounded 2 Doing on Steam?

For context on why PS5 players should be excited, Grounded 2’s Steam reception tells the story well. The game holds an 87% Very Positive rating on Steam, with players consistently praising it as exactly the kind of sequel Grounded needed — more content, a bigger world, more variety, and the same co-op chaos that made the original such a hit.

The main criticisms in the reviews point to technical issues and content that’s still being built out through Early Access — which is fair, and exactly the kind of feedback Obsidian has been using to shape each update. The developer has been upfront that player suggestions directly influence what gets prioritized, and Into the Abyss features like the Smoothies system returning and Custom Game settings are direct examples of community requests making it into the game.

The game peaked at nearly 50,000 concurrent players on Steam the day Early Access launched in July 2025, which for a survival game still in development is a very strong number. The PS5 launch is expected to bring another significant burst of players into Brookhollow Park — which is exactly why Obsidian paired it with the biggest update yet.

Is Grounded 2 on PS5 the Full Game?

Grounded 2 is still in Early Access on Xbox and Steam, and the PS5 version launches under the same Early Access banner. That means you’re getting a substantial, content-rich game — but not a finished 1.0 product. Obsidian has not set a firm release date for the full version, with a complete launch currently targeting sometime in 2027.

The good news is that your existing progress carries forward into Into the Abyss — it’s a content update layered onto the existing world, not a fresh start. So if you’ve been grinding Brookhollow Park for months, your base and gear travel with you into the new pond region on August 11.

Pricing on PS5 follows the same structure as other platforms: $29.99 for the standard edition and $39.99 for the Founder’s Edition. The game is also available on Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass for subscribers on those platforms.
